It’s a preservation story more than a century and a half in the making. When the estate of America’s first president fell into disrepair in the mid-nineteenth century, Ann Pamela Cunningham and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association stepped in to save the mansion, establishing a model for preserving historic sites nationwide.
