>> SO WE OPEN UP REGISTRATION IN NOVEMBER EVERY YEAR AT THE END OF FEBRUARY AND WE HAVE THEM COMPLETE A FORM AND WE VERIFY AND VET EVERY ORGANIZATION AND WE MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE LEGITIMATE ORGANIZATION WITH THE IRS AND 501C3 BEFORE THEY'RE ACCEPTED AND ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE.
>> I BET YOU A LOT OF NONPROFITS WANT TO GET ON THE WEBSITE?
>> YES, YES, IT GOES IN WAVES AND THAT WHOLE FOUR MONTHS, A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND PHONE CALLS.
>> WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS?
MAYBE SOMEONE HAS A GROUP RIGHT NOW AND SO THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE INVOLVED WITH?
>> THEY NEED TO KNOW THAT IT'S A JOINT AND COLLABORATIVE EFFORT AND WE DO THINGS LIKE THAT AND GET THE WORD OUT TO THE PUBLIC AND PROVIDE A MARKETING TOOLKIT TO CREATE THEIR OWN FUNDRAISER MESSAGING TO THEIR AUDIENCES, AS WELL.

>> A LOT OF ORGANIZATIONS START OUT WITH A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE AND NET DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE A WEBSITE BECAUSE THAT COSTS MONEY, RIGHT, BUT THEY CAN STILL PARTICIPATE AND THE WEBSITE IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND AND YOU CAN TO AZGIVE.ORG AND THE NONPROFITS ARE YEAR.
>> IF YOU'RE A DONOR OR FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE ONE SAY THAT'S THE ONE FOR ME, WHAT DO YOU DO?
YOU CLICK ON IT OR HOW DOES IT WORK?

AND SO BEFORE IT COMES OUT OF LEFT FIELD, BECAUSE OF OUR OWN ANXIETY, PARENT'S OWN ANXIETY, LET'S HEAR WHAT OUR KIDS HAVE TO SAY.

>> HUGELY IMPORTANT AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOU MIGHT TALK TO YOUR 5-YEAR-OLD AND DIFFER.

BIG I WOULD IMAGINE, ABIGAIL, HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE WAR.

THE CLOSE WE ARE TO SOMETHING AWFUL THAT HAPPENS, WE MIGHT HAVE FRIENDS OR RELATIVES IN UKRAINE OR IN THE MILITARY AND WE'RE VERY CONCERNED THAT THEY'LL BE DEPLOYED OR THEY MAY BE HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED ALREADY OR WE KNOW WE'VE HAD OUR OWN EXPERIENCES OF WAR IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY OR IN A DISTANT PAST AND THAT WILL BRING US CLOSER TO THAT AND THE CLOSER WE HAVE TO AN AWFUL EVENT, THE BIGGER THE FEELINGS WILL BE AND IF WE DON'T GET A HANDLE OF THAT OR AWARE OF OUR OWN FEELINGS, THEN IT'S HARDER TO REGULATE THEM AND HARDER FOR US TO REGULATE OUR FEELINGS, IT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT TO BE PRESENT AND LISTEN TO OUR KIDS.
>> NOT ONLY THAT, BUT KIDS PICK UP ON THIS, DON'T THEY, WITHOUT REALIZING IT.
>> THIS MIGHT AFFECT WHAT THEY TELL YOU, BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO MAKE YOU UPSET, SO THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO DEAL WITH AND YOU HAVE WAYS THAT YOU HANDLE YOUR OWN BIG EMOTIONS AND GO AND DO THAT BEFORE TALKING TO YOUR KIDS AND TAKE A BREATH OR TAKE A CUP OF TEA OR A GLASS OF WATER OR A SHORT WALK BEFORE YOU SIT DOWN AND TALK WITH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT IT.
>> WHEN YOU TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT IT, IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEN THEY WHAT, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, THEY LEARN WHEN THEY'RE FRIGHTENED, THEY CAN COME TO YOU.
>> THESE ARE WHAT I'LL CALL ESSENTIAL CONVERSATIONS IN MY BOOK, WHEN THE WORLD FEELS LIKE A SCARRY PLACE, THAT IF YOU HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR KIDS EVERYDAY, THEN THEY LEARN THAT WHENEVER HAPPENS, THEY CAN COME AND TALK TO YOU.
LET'S TAKE THIS EVENT OR THIS AWFUL WAR IN UKRAINE AND FIRST OF ALL, LISTEN TO THEM AND WATCH THEM AND SO YOU MIGHT SAY TO YOUR CHILD, YOU KNOW, I CAN SEE THAT YOU'RE LOOKING DOWN AND YOUR BROW IS FURROWED YOU'RE WORRIED AND I DON'T KNOW, THAT MAYBE YOU FEEL THAT IN YOUR BODY BECAUSE I KNOW WHEN I'M WORRIED, I FEEL THAT IN MY TUMMY AND I GOT BUTTERFLIES WHAT ARE YOU FEELING?
HELP THEM LABEL WHAT THEY'RE FEELING AND YOU CAN GO FROM THAT INTO WHAT THEY'RE THINKING.
>> IGNORING THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA AND ALL THAT DOES IS RAISE WHATEVER LEVEL OF ANXIETY IS THERE, HUH?
>> SO WE MIGHT PRETEND THAT OUR KIDS DON'T KNOW OR AREN'T THINKING ABOUT THAT, BUT WHEN WE CONVEY THAT TO THEM, WE CALL THAT IGNORING OR INVALIDATING.
THEY CAN GET YOU INTO TROUBLE.
THE WAY PARENTS RESPOND KID'S EMOTIONS PROVIDES IMPORTANT LESSONS FOR KIDS TO TAKE WITH THEM AS THEY GROW UP.
>> LISTEN TO YOUR KIDS AND VALIDATE THEIR EMOTIONS AND MOSTLY LISTEN.
>> AND THEN, DON'T FORGET THAT WHEN YOU'VE DONE ALL OF THAT, AND YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS THAT YOUR KIDS ARE WORRIED ABOUT, ENGAGED THEM IN A PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCESS AND HELP SCAFFOLDED THEM SO THAT THEY COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS TO HELP THEMSELVES FEEL NOT SO BAD.
>> YOU'RE TEACHING THEM THAT THEY, HOWEVER SMALL THEY FEEL, THEY CAN MAKE CHANGE.

IT'S TIME AND COVID PLAYED A SMALL PART AND WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT FOR YEARS AND IT MADE US THINK ABOUT OUR LIVES AND I WANT TO DO OTHER THINGS AND IT'S EXHAUSTING AND WE ARE JUST READY.
WHEN YOU HEAR MY STORY, WHEN YOU HEAR OTHER PEOPLE'S STORIES, IT HAS TO BE BITTERSWEET BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN A PART OF SO MANY PEOPLE'S LIVES.
I HAVE CUSTOMERS LIKE YOU AND LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD MOMENTOUS OCCASIONS THERE AND, YOU KNOW, IN A WAY IT FELT SELF-ISH TO JUST KIND OF CUT THE TIES.
YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO AND WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR RESTAURANT RESONATED WITH SO MANY PEOPLE AND WHAT MADE YOUR RESTAURANT SPECIAL AND STILL DOES UNTIL, I GUESS, JUNE?
>> JUNE 25TH.
>> I DON'T THINK IT'S ANY ONE THING.
I THINK WE HIT THE RIGHT COMBINATION, I THINK.
CERTAINLY OUR LOCATION, JUST BEING WHERE WE ARE, CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN, IN DOWNTOWN, CLOSE TO THE MAIN DRAG, BUT NOT REALLY IN IT.
AND I THINK IT CREATES AN OASIS THAT PEOPLE ENJOYED, YOU KNOW, MATURE LANDSCAPING AND THE FEELING OF BEING THERE AND KIND OF FUNKY, YOU KNOW, NOT SHINY AND, YOU KNOW, IT'S PEOPLE RELAX THERE AND I THINK WHEN YOU GO THERE, IT'S NOT JUST TO EAT A MEAL BUT TO SORT OF BE WITH FRIEND AND YOUR LOVED ONES AND IT'S AN EXPERIENCE.
IT'S SOMETHING THAT TAKES YOU AWAY FROM THE DAILY GRIND.
>> WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED THE RESTAURANTS, WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS AND LOOKING BACK, CAN YOU HAVE IMAGINED THE RESTAURANT BEING NOW WHAT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT BACK THEN?
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, COULD YOU SEE THIS BACK THEN OR WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING AT?
>> NO I MEAN, CERTAINLY NOT TO THE EXTENT OF HOW IT EVOLVED.
BUT WE KNEW THAT WHAT WE WANTED -- WE KNEW WHAT WE WANTED TO CREATE.
AND I THINK WE FILLED THE VOID TEMPES DID NOT HAVE AND WE KEPT ADAPTING IT TO BE THE DIRECTION IT SEEMED TO GO.
IT WAS VERY ORGANIC IN THE WAY IT DEVELOPED.
WE LISTENED TO PEOPLE AND WE LISTENED TO OUR CUSTOMERS AND WE TRUSTED OUR STAFF.
WE LET OUR CHEFS TAKE OFF AND DO THE CRAZY IDEAS THAT THEY HAD.
NOT EVERY TIME, BUT USUALLY, YEAH.
>> OVER THE YEARS, OBVIOUSLY, TEMPE, DOWNTOWN TEMPE CHANGED AND I MEAN BIG TIME, TO WHERE MOST FOLKS COULDN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT WAS LIKE WHEN YOU STARTED AND YOU MENTIONED TO ADAPT ALL OF THOSE YEARS AND HOW?
>> WELL, I THINK BECAUSE I'M SO ACTIVE IN TEMPE AND THE TOURISM INDUSTRY AND IN THE DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION AND I'VE BEEN IN TEMPE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS AND I'M NOT GOING TO SAY HOW MANY AND I WORKED FOR 12 YEARS BEFORE OUR RESTAURANT AT THE BANNER, WHICH WAS ANOTHER FABULOUS, LOVELY WONDERFUL PLACE AND WENT TO SCHOOL RIGHT THERE AND I, IN FACT, LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM WHERE TRICKS IS WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE.
SO I KIND OF KNEW AND I HAD A HEARTBEAT, A PACE ON WHAT WAS GOING ON.
IT DIDN'T REALLY SURPRISE ME.
I WASN'T TAKEN BY SURPRISE AS I WATCHED IT EVOLVE AND I EXPECTED IT TO GO THE WAY IT WENT.
WE JUST MOVED THE BEST WE COULD.
I DIDN'T LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
BUT, YOU KNOW, IT WAS PROGRESS AND ONGOING WAS GOING TO STOP, AND SO WE ADAPTED AS WE WENT.
I KNEW IT WOULDN'T BE THERE FOREVER.
THE OTHER ISSUE IS NOT HOW WE'VE EVOLVED TO THE HIGH-RISE CITY, BUT THOSE BUILDINGS, AS ADORABLE AND FUN AS THEY ARE, THEY WEREN'T BUILT TO DO WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING TO THEM FOR THE LAST 35 YEARS.
>> I'LL BET.
AND THEY'VE TAKEN A LOT OF ABUSE AND WE'VE SAVED FOR 35 YEARS OR MORE AND THEY'RE TIRED.
YOU KNOW, THEY'RE TIRED AND IT'S SAD AND I FEEL LIKE WE DID A GOOD THING FOR A LOT OF YEARS.
THERE'S NO WAY THAT COULD GO ON FOREVER.
IT'S JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
>> THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO LOOK AT IT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE RETIRING.
ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A HOUSE OF TRICKS TWO?
>> ONE OF OUR EMPLOYEES IS THINKING OF OPENING A RESTAURANT AND SHE'S FABULOUS AND WE WILL HELP HER GET STARTED, IF HER AND HER HUSBAND DECIDE WHAT THAT'S WHAT THEY'LL DO.
AND NO, I'M READY TO DO SOMETHING ELSE.
I'M READY TO NOT BE A RESTAURANT OWNER ANYMORE.
I FEEL BETWEEN THE TWO BANNERS AND TRICKS, IT'S BEEN ALMOST 50 YEARS.
I'M READY.

>> WELL, AND SUCH A GREAT RESTAURANT, SUCH A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
