GSU softball wrapped up their regular season with 2 wins GSU baseball shuffle.
Some games around the battles against Davenport Allendale and GSU men's and women's tennis competing ugly act tournament over the weekend.
Rocket in Laker nation is the Grand Valley State sport report starts right now.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Gbs you across to the newest Lakers to win ugly act championship beating northern Michigan in Davenport over the weekend and route to their 6th glee action paean ship in program history.
Now to talk about a team's head coach mckenzie Lawler coach.
Welcome back to the show.
Congratulations.
Second straight glee, actor numb and championships.
6th overall in program.
History was made to it.
>> Well, thank you for the congratulations.
I think for the team, it just really is fulfilling to get that championship after a long, you know, year of hard work and it was great winning the championship last year and kind of as soon as that season was over, this was another goal that we set to be back to back champs and to go through conference, play undefeated and then to win the tournament again, I think really just shows the focus of our team at this time of year.
>> The way the glee act is set up to the plate teams for a 3rd time in this postseason here for this ugly act tournament run at what was the mindset going into key point northern Michigan just a week ago that around now play them in a kind of win or go home situation.
What was the flip in the minds of all of the conversation with the team heading into this week where you had to triple rematches with teams this week.
>> With northern Michigan.
I think the week before was senior day.
So there's a lot of motions kind of centered around that game that maybe we want to sharpen the beginning.
And so it's just really, really proud of our team.
I think we moved the ball so fast.
Offensively.
You know, defense only allowing 2 goals in the game.
That's outstanding.
And I just think we dominated from start to finish and then with that import, you know, we know that's become a rival game and we saw them in the conference tournament last week.
So I'm just wanting to execute our matchups again, I think offensive Lee take advantage of some things that we didn't capitalize on in the second game.
And I think we handled that really well.
>> But you talk about the game on Friday.
What a run that was right out of the gate for gold for you to look up at the scoreboard.
Northern Michigan.
Get the couple back with the new guys shut them out.
The rest of the way.
You had to be really impressed with the way our defense played in that meant higher match really.
>> For sure.
And it was really nice their impact in the clearing in transition game as well.
That was something that wasn't a sharp the week before.
And just our spacing.
You know, some silly unforced turnovers and I think all 5 of our starting defenders did amazing job executing that.
>> We talked a lot this year about Sophie Khan.
Roy, we talked, of course, about Molly burst near the Katy young to me this week really had a fantastic game plan from that expedition.
>> She did.
I think she's really stepped up.
You know, a champagne has been battling some injuries and absolutely dominate on the draw, but a little bit limited other areas.
The field.
And I think as a junior, you know, we have really needed to rely on key and she's done an amazing job.
You know, play with confidence in the back taking some chances but really being a strong offensive threat for us.
>> Yeah.
You so you that game on Friday could be the dominant 23 to 2 when you knew it wasn't going to be the same against Davenport.
You still get off to a really, really fast start.
How much did you guys talk about the fast start against that, particularly after the last couple of weeks, maybe a little slower going before you kind of found the the offensive rhythm.
>> I think just controlling the tempo is so important.
And, you know, taking the right shots early in the game really controlling the clock value in the possession of the ball off the draw control.
And Maggie and Molly do such a good job.
And we really executed that well in that opening quarter against at Port.
>> This game against Davenport was a really physical game that saw a lot of time in the midfield happen with the conversation.
What what we put pressure the most about your midfielders because to us it looks like it was such a physical game and that ride was super important throughout.
This has definitely little more back and forth.
And I feel like the game was on Friday need to get a little more up and down.
And.
>> I think our defenders in Mali said and ash, you know, a lot of times people focus on our offensive highlights.
But and all 3 of them are really great defenders.
And you saw, you know, some really big round boss in caused turnovers that led to some transition goals for us that came from those 3.
>> And that was really crucial for them to be solid on both sides of the field to give your defense a huge shout out.
I attributed it does not score a single goal in this match, which I'm sure was a big focal point for you and a great job on the defensive side.
But I want to talk about that end of the 3rd quarter because Davenport goes on that run.
All the sudden they've got a little bit of momentum in so he can really just takes over with what 3 goals in the last 45 2nd, Molly had one of them, but he had to including one with one 2nd left in the period that had to do so much for your momentum going into the 4th quarter.
>> Absolutely.
And you know her and Kate at some great chemistry on those to man situations know there's new things that we put in towards the end of the season and it means so much as a coach to really be able to rely on a person like Sophie Khan, right to, you know, if Davenport scores another goal and kind of close.
Is that to to the momentum of the game is very, very different.
And us as a coaching staff have the most confidence in her as does your teammates.
And I think she really flourishes in those moments and is excited to be that person that we lean on.
>> Well, it was clear to see that your team has the utmost confidence in you as well.
Not only with the water bottle battle for getting points in the air.
Just tell us about that celebration with the teen, what that meant to be able to celebrate with your girls.
And.
>> So but I think Lee campeon just yet again yesterday House a little scared of being hoisted up.
You know, Maggie hammer was bouncing up a little bit.
Airborne.
Have a little nervous.
But relationships are really important to us in our program.
Another modest time that we spend with our student athletes or off the field than on and really getting to know them as people.
And.
>> I think they know how much we invest in them.
And we know how much time they're investing into the program.
And so to get a win for all of us.
Just really means a lot.
>> And it's all going to culminate in a really special moment next Sunday.
When you hear your name called at the nca tournament selection show second time in program history.
Your first trip to the N C a a turn, of course, covid played a big role in that.
That has to feel really, really good for you in this team to get back to that state and just tell us all about the excitement of what's going to come.
Obviously don't know the exact bracket yet, but just knowing that the nca turn it on the horizon.
>> I think we've felt like it was a long time coming.
And you know, last year the NCAA a shrinking the tournament from 4 to 3 in region.
And we're the 4th.
And so again, you know, that was something that we really wanted to play with purpose all season of where plane for the 27 players on our roster, but also the players who've graduated the last couple years that with covid didn't have the opportunity to go.
So everyone is on the roster has not been through selection Sunday yet.
So I think we're really excited to get together, get some food, you know, celebrate that moment zoom in with some parents are parents support to the weekend was awesome.
They are we're coordinating colors and really wanted to show that Grande Valley presence in the stands.
So we're really excited for that moment.
And then, you know, our region I think is one of the toughest regions of the country with Indy ourselves.
Regis at lindenwood.
You know, we've all been top 10 teams a good amount of the season.
And so we know the draw will be tough.
I think we're expecting to see Regis was a very similar team on paper to us I think will be really exciting to, you know, start kind of working on ourselves this week and then once the selection is official.
>> You know, really diving into that scout next week to be prepped for a first term appearance.
You can't leave the parents out about 300 people on hand yesterday.
What an atmosphere to close out the GSU lacrosse field for the season.
An unbelievable way to do it to hoist a trophy now is to go time to go get at least one more coach.
Thanks so much for your time.
Congratulations again on ugly act.
Championship are looking for to see you play the nca tournament just a couple weeks.
Thanks.
Don't go away.
To Grand Valley State sport return in just a moment.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Tvs.
You baseball played 3 games against Davenport over the weekend dropping to but winning one to this now before they play the final game of the four-game series Monday afternoon as head coach.
Jamie, to tell you to coach.
It seems like with the glee act this year.
Week in week out.
We're saying big series is another one this weekend against Davenport right in the thick of it.
But so far pretty good.
>> Yes, so far, so good.
You know, it just seems like every weekend just like a big boxing match must purchase throwing haymakers back and forth in the top 4 teams right now are all within.
Let's talk about a half a game of each other.
So, you know, a lot of parity there in the top 4 in this conference has gotten so much better.
So it's it's really good baseball.
So we've got a big one today.
So hopefully play.
Well.
>> Yeah, I think the regional committee would agree with you considering the top 4 in the first rankings were all from the glee act.
What does that say about the strength of that, especially the top of this conference.
Sure.
I mean, it's changed so much over time.
It used to be Grand Valley.
Maybe Ashland are Wednesday.
And then the rest of the pack to the 9 teams below 500.
>> And now you've got, you know, for pretty good teams at the top, you know, and and then you've got teams that are still right around or above 500.
So the conference, you know, strength is just got so much better.
You know, and I don't know if it's Michigan.
Baseball are just better coach recruiting.
And, you know, across the board the conference or what.
But our conference is significantly gone up.
And you know, the competitive level play for no.
For the most part of the conference.
>> We look at this series.
We expected to be a close one.
And it certainly has.
Every game has been within 3 runs or less.
Both teams have had a lead in all 3 games so far is kind of what you expected with the crosstown showdown with that report.
>> It is it is.
You know, they they've got a lot of talent that dust and the players as doing.
So.
That's that's what you'd expect when 2 teams get together and it's a big series.
And you know, coming down to the wire.
The end of the year.
It's like every little thing matters.
And you know, in some ways it's about to execute poor little thing.
So and again, hoping that's us today.
>> Yeah.
Game one 43 Davenport takes you guys out hit.
The Panthers are able to get a run back and that bottom of the 9th inning with a home run but came up just a little bit short, but it really good back and forth matchup in Game one of the other night.
>> Really was good.
Pitching.
You know the Fisher, their starting pitcher threw really well.
He kept us off balance, you know.
And then we had you know, we have really good vision as well.
Just a couple little things.
Again, you know, want to stake here there and then that process again.
>> Yet the bullpen has been phenomenal early on in this series.
Ben Thomas goes to scoreless in that game.
Then what Nic cha did to shut down Davenport Game one.
Yesterday was sensational.
>> Yeah.
Next.
Next been lights out this whole year.
I'm just really, really studies.
Just a hardworking kid again.
He said he's another example of practice have been showing up on the field, very talented kid.
And and he's just, you know, don't really well right now.
>> We talk about the resilience of this team quite a bit after Game one a tough luck loss in Game 2 Davenport scored those 2 runs in the top of the second.
What a response by your team, though, to get 3 back immediately in the bottom of that inning.
Davenport highs in the top of the 3rd.
You've got a spot.
We get another three-run inning.
>> Really seem like just the tenacity of the team showed in that first game yesterday.
It was just a very competitive group and that and that was a very good example.
And then kind of what I mentioned earlier.
You know, the conversation hears the next inning site.
We had 2 outs and 2 strikes on a guy in his note to count.
It's unbelievable that things escalated to 7 runs.
And it's just little things here and there.
You don't get a call.
You don't play.
You don't execute a pitch.
All these little things add up 7 runs apparently.
But you know, just just take care.
One of those and be really, really good at being good instead of trying to be unbelievable.
You know that, you know, that's the mindset going into to making plays in executing pitches.
You know, we have to control our minds of those moments.
It's a marvel coach thing.
But, you know, it was we was for their we perform.
So hopefully like I said, that, you know, the guys are mentally prepared to to execute little things today.
>> Yeah, into series win against Wayne state.
One against Davenport.
You can really look at one inning of one game, the kind of swings, the entire thing.
And that one, as you mentioned, game to yesterday, that seven-run 4th inning for for Davenport.
Really kind of broke things.
Open.
Seems like those 2 innings stand up.
They do seem like anomalies for your team.
>> That for the most part has been very solid as you talked about.
Yeah.
So in 1111 of those 12 games so far.
I mean, it's it's just back and forth just misses just back and forth.
It's a one-run game is up.
You know, one thing here.
One thing there, they have to leave.
We have the latest.
Just 2 really good baseball to be honest.
>> And then coming down the stretch.
Your coach as we look ahead, you got one more today.
Thank you for joining us.
Probably as the show's airing that game against Davenport is just wrapping up in the next weekend.
You have 4 at home against Parkside.
You talk about all the time.
The pride of being on your home, feel the pride of playing at home to be able to end the season with 8 straight now, 5 remaining on your home field has to give you a lot of confidence here to wrap up the regular season start to look towards postseason.
>> Yeah, we have a pretty confident group, too.
And you can see, by the way that we play again with for down and we are going to come back around in the game.
We're going make it exciting and some point.
But, you know, we like to make his last 5 a really exciting home and we'll send our seniors out the right way.
>> Well, you know, coach, we love to have you here on set.
But it's a good thing that you're back now because that means baseball is coming up this afternoon and had your way instead.
Can't wait to watch the baseball this afternoon.
Go even up that series and get back on the winning ways.
>> Great.
Thanks for your guys.
Take shape.
>> Right back at the Grand Valley.
State sports report continues right here on WDTN [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] GSU men's and women's tennis competed in the glee actor numbing over the weekend.
The women's team would make it to the glee acts any final before falling to Wayne state.
The men's team that finishes glee act runner-up as they made a run to the championship match on Sunday afternoon.
Turning now to talk about or teams as head coach Sam showing coach.
We talked a couple weeks ago.
>> Turning our attention towards postseason.
Play it here now a good run for both your teams.
That was the weekend in Midland for.
Yeah.
Thank you.
It was to get around.
It was a competition.
Good tennis across the weekend.
A bit disappointing but not come home with the championship.
But we know we're not done yet.
We're looking for to regionals next week.
>> What's the mindset shift as you go from playing individual matches to play in a tournament format such as the glee actress.
>> Yes, quite different because you play to clinch.
So as soon as one team gets want the 2 doubles points.
The doubles and a son as a team gets for singles points than the singles.
And so when your plan to clinch it just changes the timing of the matches, the pressure of the match is just a little bit.
>> Start on the women's side.
They open up with that match against Michigan Tech.
You guys take that 1, 4, to one.
Tell us about the opening round of the afternoon for you.
>> Yeah, it was a tough match.
Really Michigan Tech fought very hard.
We played outdoors a little bit windy conditions and they're ready to play.
So we we took the doubles point got into singles.
We got the job done.
But were there along the match in and had to find those a good experience, though.
I thought we we it was a good data to prep for the semifinal match.
>> Yeah.
It's interesting with the glee actress as well because as we know, whether is play a role in just about every spring sport.
All we can all year at seems like there's different start times and under indoor outdoor to prepare for both throughout it.
You get through that match.
As you said, a lengthy one.
How, if at all does that carry over to the next day against Wednesday.
>> Well, the next against Wayne state.
We we start in the afternoon.
We play doubles outdoors.
Same thing windy.
The rain started to come.
And we plan a couple of points of single some girls play one game of of their singles match.
And then we ended up moving in dorsal.
They're a different element.
You know, changing the the location and then happened to readjust indoors.
It's it's a different game.
It's a faster game.
Saw that.
And I thought I just real quick and finish the match indoors.
>> Not just to mention the adjusted but also the flow of the matches will have to get completely shifted as you go from playing back and forth in the outdoor courts.
All the sudden OK.
Hold on pause.
>> We have to move inside and try to ramp up that intensity.
That has to be really tough for both sides.
Yeah, exactly.
But I think one of the best things that are women seem does is is their focus.
You know, they they go there.
They focus on what they have to do and they don't let a lot of things that track number bottom side really proud of how they handle that.
They just put their heads down and and did what needed to be done.
Competed hard when indoors.
>> You have a veteran squad on the women's side has some good experience in the postseason made that great run a few years ago.
You still have some of those players still left over from that.
How much, if at all does it help to have that championship experience and have some of that going into tournaments like this.
>> Yeah, no doubt about it.
We have a an experienced team utter team.
And I think we we rely on that.
I think it it serves them well.
They have played in all of the pressure situations in the pressure matches saw they they know that.
They know what it feels like to help the younger ones as well.
>> And then let's talk about the men's side as well because you get up to a great start against Lake Superior state.
Go avenge a loss against para state and they get to the championship matches will happen on the men's side this week.
>> Yeah.
The first match replay what was real good.
We're out there for about 2 hours.
We clinch a pretty quick and until had a lot of confidence going into the match against Paris.
We played outdoor.
Same thing a little bit.
Windy conditions a little bit slower of the game.
And I think it didn't quite a lot.
The guys came on doubles.
Very hot, very energized.
We want to 3 doubles a 6, 0, 2, doubles and a 5, 0, And then in the closing at 6, 2, So to get the double play was big.
We lost the doubles point against.
There's the first time we played and pretty quick for for parents them till.
So that was good.
We got a quick one.
I wanted to do so.
We were up 3, 0, for a little while.
Had a couple go towards Paris.
And then we had a hard number 6 kylen to a 3rd set.
He had 4 set points in the second set and didn't close it out.
So it was a dramatic match.
A lot of teams were there.
So the other match just finished the women seem draw their cell quite a big crowd watching that 3rd set.
Meanwhile, are number 4.
The other 3 match was going on to both of them were super close >> those high stakes, high high intensity in and we ended up coming up with this saw couple 11, the nines in some tight once 76 and so is definitely back and forth down the stretch that which is always phone.
You're playing arrival in Paris.
And what exactly that was exciting.
The guys are really good about it.
>> And is nice to go into the championship with that.
And we just came up against a very strong winds, a team.
They've had an incredible season.
They've they've been some of the top teams in the country.
I was really proud of our guys during the match after the match.
We're prepared going into it.
I'm hungry for it.
But just came up a little bit short.
We know that we might see him again in a in a week now.
So if we do will will be ready.
That plan again.
>> Yeah.
Both teams felt really strong weight status.
Both I will probably assume will be in the nca term.
It's selection show tomorrow to find out officially where you are with the bracket looks like.
But what do you hope your teens take from this.
We can carry forward into the nca tournament next week.
>> But just the motivation is an all-time high.
The teams are hungry for it.
They deserve the success that they get in and that they've had so far.
So I think we just want to finish the season on the on the best for the weekend.
>> But what really cold for your team grow as much as they did throughout the season, overcome some adversity, whether be the weather not figure out where you're going to play kind of figure all that stuff out throughout this year and the play really good tennis as the postseason.
If you're a great run through the gully act on.
And now hopefully that sets up for a great run in the nca.
So coach, congratulations on a great week.
Still plenty of work to do.
We look forward to seeing where you'll place next week and then go get a thank you.
Don't go away.
The Grand Valley State support for return in a moment.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] GSU softball closed out their regular season this week with a double header sweep of Purdue Northwest Indiana now shift their attention to the glee actor and starting this Friday in Ohio is now to talk about the team's head coach Dan Callahan and coach.
We start with the lead ugly act.
Regular season champions for the 5th straight year he did without even taking the field back to some losses earlier in the week.
But congratulations was another ugly act.
Regular season title mean to you.
>> You know, it's just one of those things as far as the consistency that the program has developed and then the recruiting that my my staff has done.
We're proud of that.
We're proud of the players are proud of how they've developed and then the fact that they're still hungry for it.
You know, they fight day in and day out for that championship.
And and I'm very proud of them.
>> The startup gojek season to into, but then turn around one, 21 of your last 22 games, including this 13 game winning streak that closes out the regular season for that team to kind of get their attention.
We talked about it after that first week.
Maybe a little bit of a wake-up call.
It seems like that's exactly what it was.
>> It is.
You know, and that's exactly what this team has its characters about, you know, we lost those 2 games on our home field and that that stung a little bit to teams that we thought we should have lost to end.
They they definitely took it to heart and they you don't turn it up a notch.
>> Then you go on the road to pretty Northwest this week to close out the season who when the conference standings were out that day were number 2 in the conference.
It was a battle but one versus 2 and your offense coming right out of the gate swinging the bat top score 4 runs and that first inning on the road against a team.
The you know, has some really good bat that had to be a big sigh of relief for your team as well.
It was an opera to Northwest was the first loss we took.
>> And the conference.
And so that that has a memory of their so they definitely wanted to put their stamp on it and then show the team what we're about and they did that.
>> And then had to be as we talked about a week in and week out because she's been so good that she had to talk about consistency.
She has been the Queen of consistency this year.
Once again, she doesn't a 5 inning shutout win.
>> She does.
And you know, she's Jude again, she's the leader of our pitching staff.
And and what she's the one we look to to set the tone beginning each double header in.
You never know the second time 3rd time around all teams are going to face them and the adjustments.
But she just keeps battling.
>> You know, we talked about generally like last week as part of the senior day at that awesome moment where he doubled in her final at that at the GSU softball field, then it around get another hit miss would have to be so rewarding for you to see it get this put so much time and effort into this program for 4 years.
A couple of opportunities to come up in big situations.
>> Yeah.
You know, I don't know if she's just feeling.
The pressure are not feeling the pressure.
She just going up there and she's put the bat on the ball and finding some holes.
So, you know, makes you wonder if I had missed something the last 4 years.
But now Dana Lee is just a great team player when she's called upon, she goes out and gives her best effort.
>> The top of the order continues to really dominate let you go.
What a fantastic double header for you again, including 4 hits in Game 2, including the hit that gave you guys the lead in that big second game.
That was 3 to 2 and you talk about the leader of the pitching staff being Hannah.
But what Joe, what Lydia have done in the heart of that order.
Taylor eager as well.
And then belief that the bottom portion of the order.
You really seen some of your veteran players step up in this line of have some big moment Bailey had that big double at their state.
But he's had big hit after big hit as has Joe and take breaks.
>> Yeah, you know, I mean, you always rely on your upperclassman.
They come to, you know, show the underclassmen what to expect, what to do, how to handle different situations and they have been the pinnacle of of handling those pressure spots and not coming through big for us.
>> And we looked ahead Hollister.
She missed some time this year.
But now she's back and she started hit the ball hard as well.
You know, sometimes in softball top, he hit the ball really hard.
Just not find holes in.
It seems like that would happen with Holly a little bit.
But you start to find some gap a little bit out there as well.
>> Kids, you know, and and from being a slap or, you know, you want to be a triple threat and not just a matter reading defenses.
And you know, when to lay the bunt down.
Want to do this off lab one to hit it hard when to find a gap, those kinds of things and then she started a grass that a little bit.
But those are the things that you just never know with a slap or how they're going to how they're going to react.
But those are the things that we look forward to are lefties.
>> The game of softball.
So interesting, right.
Game one against parks are desperate.
Enough went for the 13 hit to score 9 runs in Game 2 of 13 hit to score 3 runs because a little bit tighter and that when they get the first 2 on in the 7th inning, including the potential winning run on base and Genesis egg are able to lock down, get that plan felt Strand the tying run 60 feet away was an awesome show from jea to close out that one.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
You know, G is has been a little up and down at times there's been some outings that have.
But a little rough for, but she's definitely taking those heart and learn from those.
And, you know, and then there's been games that she has just been a wizard.
So it's very nice to see that.
And then now you know what, we can expect from her moving forward.
>> A little bit of a Houdini act to close out the regular season.
You guys now go into conference.
Postseason play with the glee actor and starting this week you'll be the one seed in that sport.
Sports Park in Ohio.
Can we expect this week.
Commuting.
