I'LL SERVE AS A STUDENT MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD REPUBLICS 247,000 STUDENTS.
I'M HERE NOT TO COLLECT A TITLE OR POLISH A RESUME BUT TO GIVE BACK TO SOMETHING THAT SHAPED ME IN MORE WAYS THAT I CAN IMAGINE.
12 YEARS AGO, MY FAMILY MOVED TO NORTH CAROLINA SO MY DAD SEATED BACK THERE COULD PURSUE MEDICAL THERAPY.
I FOLLOWED HIS FOOTSTEPS WITH A DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE LAST MAY.
WHILE THERE I SERVED AS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT AND TRUSTEE AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE, A GREAT WAY TO GIVE BACK.
I HAVE CONTINUED MY JOURNEY THROUGH THE ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM I'LL COMPLETE NEXT SPRING.
IF GIVEN THE CHANCE TO DO IT OVER AGAIN, I WOULD NOT CHANGE A THING.
EVEN THROUGH THE PANDEMIC, ZOOM FATIGUE AND UNCERTAINTY, I NEVER DOWGHT DOUBTED I WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE.
I HAVE DISCOVERED WHO I AM AND WHO I WANT TO BECOME.
I MADE LIFELONG OPPORTUNITIES I NEVER THOUGHT WAS POSSIBLE.
THAT FUELS HIGHER EDUCATION THAT I BRING TO THE ROLE EVERYDAY.
SOME OF YOU MAY NOTICE MY PURPLE TIME WITH DIAMONDS TODAY.
I WON'T SAY IF CHANCELLOR RODGERS MADE ME WEAR IT, BUT I FIGURED IT WAS SAFE TO KEEPING THEM HAPPY BACK THERE.
I PUT 17 INSTITUTIONS FIRST AND SERVE WITH INTEGRITY AND PERSPECTIVE.
THIS IS MY FOURTH YEAR IN LEADERSHIP AND WITH THAT COMES THE CHALLENGES WE FACE, EROSIONS OF TRUST AND COST AND LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY.
I BELIEVE IN HIGHER EDUCATION TO TRANSFORM LIVES BECAUSE I HAVE LIVED IT.
MY GOAL IS TO ENSURE STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITIES I HAVE RECEIVED THUS FAR.
IN FACT I BELIEVE IT WAS CHANCELLOR MARTIN YESTERDAY WHOSE REMARKS WERE IMPORTANT AND NOTABLE TO ME.
HE CHALLENGED ME TO THINK WHAT STUDENT SUCCESS MEANS THROUGH THE EYES OF THE STUDENT.
THAT MATCHES WHAT I CAMPAIGNED ON, EXPANDING DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND FOSTERING BELONGING ACROSS THE COMMUNITIES.
THESE ARE REAL NEEDS THAT DEFINE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE AND RESTORE CONFIDENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION.
ON THE FRONT I WANT TO SHARE A FEW UPDATES, WE ARE HIRING THE CABINET WITH A WIDE RANGE OF PER SUSPECT I AND EQUIPPING OFFICERS WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED.
WE ARE LOOKING TO SHARPEN OUR IMPACT AT STATE AND CIVIC LEVEL AND LATER TONIGHT STUDENT BODY PRESIDENTS TO SHARE PROBLEM SOLVING ACROSS ALL 17 INSTITUTIONS.
I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED BY THE CALIBER OF THE STUDENT LEADERS AND LOOK FORWARD TO ELEVATING THEIR VOICES.
TO THE CHANCELLORS IN THE ROOM, THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE OPPORTUNITIES.
I KNOW HOW FIRST HAND THAT CRITICAL PARTNERSHIP IS.
MORE CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION, TIMELY ENGAGEMENT WITH THE BOARD AND RENEWED FOCUS ON ACTIVITIES.
WE WANT TO BE A MODEL THAT DELIVERS RESULTS AND BUILDS TRUST ALONG THE WAY.
I WANT TO RECOGNIZE CAMERON BROWN IN THE BACK.
HE SHOWED UP THERE.
THE OUT GOING GOVERNOR, HIS LEADERSHIP HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL AND HIS GUIDANCE LAID THE GROUND WORK FOR SUCCESS.
I HAVE HAD THE NOTE TO CALL HIM FRIEND SINCE UNDERGRADUATE DAYS.
HE HAS SEEN ME AT MY BEST AND WORST.
IT'S BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO WALK ALONGSIDE HIM THROUGH THE JOURNEY OF LEADERSHIP.

ESTABLISHED BY THE LATE GOVERNOR GARDNER, THIS AWARD RECOGNIZES A UNC FACULTY MEMBER WHOSE WORK HAS MADE THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WELFARE OF THE HUMAN RACE.
WE ARE THANKFUL TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATIONAL PLANNING, POLICIES AND PROGRAMS THAT OVERSAW THE AWARD PROCESS.

DR. STRINGER IS USHERING IN A NEW ERA OF REVOLUTIONARY ADVANCES IN PREGNANCY CARE, DIAGNOSIS AND RESEARCH.
RECENTLY, HE AND HIS TEAM DEVELOPED A TRANSFORMATIVE AI ON OBSTETRIC SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS PROVIDERS WITH MINIMAL TRAINING TO DELIVER ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IN LOW RESOURCE SETTINGS.
THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN DEPLOYED IN AFRICAN AND NATIVE COUNTRIES WITH PLANS TO EXPAND IN UNDER SERVED AREAS IN NORTH CAROLINA.
PRIOR TO HIS TIME IN NORTH CAROLINA, DR. STRINGER SPENT THE FIRST DECADE IN AFRICA WHERE HE FOUND THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN ZAMBIA.
UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP THE TEAM REACHED 1 P 1.36 MILLION MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS IN 35 CLINICAL SITES SAVING 10S OF THOUSANDS OF LIVES.
HIS WORK HAS NOT ONLY SHAPED GLOBAL OBSTETRIC CARE BUT DEMONSTRATED HOW CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE WITH ADDRESS SPECIFIC CHALLENGES FACED BY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES.
DR. STRINGER HAS SPENT HIS LIFE LEADING GROUND BREAKING EFFORTS TO IMPROVE BIRTH OUTCOMES AND DEMOCRATIZE ACCESS TO A CENTRAL MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES, SAVING THE LIVES OF CO COUNTLESS MOTHERS AND CHILDREN.
HIS COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING THE WELFARE OF HUMANITY, ESPECIALLY FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS HAS PRODUCED OUTSTANDING RESULTS AND MOTIVATED A NEW GENERATION OF RESEARCHERS TO ENGAGE IN EQUALLY IMPACTFUL ENDEAVORS.
THE NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND NORTH CAROLINA SYSTEM RECOGNIZE DR. STRINGER FOR HIS TRAIL BLAZING WORK, SAVING AND CHANGING LIVES AROUND THE WORLD.
WHEN I ASKED DR. STRINGER WHAT HE MIGHT WANT ME TO IMPART ABOUT HIM IN MY REMARKS TODAY, HE HUMBLY OH PINED THAT ANYTHING HE ACCOMPLISHED HAS BEEN PART OF A TEAM.
HIS WIFE STANDING WITH HIM NOTED THAT WHAT DREW BOTH OF THEM TO UNC IS THAT KIND OF TEAM WORK THAT IS FOSTERED THERE, A COLLABORATIVE CULTURE THAT PERM PERMEATES THE UNIVERSITIES.
JOIN ME IN VIEWING A SHORT VIDEO HONORING DR. STRINGER'S TRANSFORMATIONAL WORK THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TREMENDOUSLY TO THE WELFARE OF HUMANITY.
[VIDEO ] >> I MET A ZAMBIAN OBSTETRICIAN DOING A MASTER'S DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA.
HE INVITED MY WIFE AND I TO COME TO ZAMBIA FOR A YEAR PREVENTING MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV.
>> WE WERE IN NO WAY PREPARED FOR WHAT WE WOULD FIND WHEN WE ARRIVED.
AT THAT TIME THERE WAS LITTLE TREATMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH HIV, THOUGH A TREMENDOUS NUMBER OF PREGNANT WOMEN AT THE TIME WERE INFECTED WITH HIV.
>> IN 2001, SO MANY WERE DYING FROM ZAMBIA.
TESTING WAS STARTING TO BECOME AVAILABLE.
THERE WAS NO TREATMENT FOR HIV.
IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A DEATH SENTENCE.
>> WE STARTED WORKING AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL WHERE ONE IN FOUR WOMEN WE WOULD ENCOUNTER WERE HIV INFECTED.
WE WENT TO WORK TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
AROUND THAT TIME NEW INNOVATIONS CAME AVAILABLE TO PREVENT MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION.
WE CONVERTED OUR OBSTETRICIANS AND LABORATORY PEOPLE INTO INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALISTS.
WE GOT A GRANT FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AND TREATED AS MANY PEOPLE WITH HIV AS WE COULD.
THE DRUGS ARE MIRACULOUS.
THEY TAKE PEOPLE ON THEIR DEATH BED AND YOU TREAT THEM AND A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE GOT UP AND WALKED OUT OF THE HOSPITAL.
>> WHEN WE STARTED, THERE WERE A THOUSAND PEOPLE UNDER DR. STRINGER'S LEADERSHIP, THE PROGRAMS REACHED A MILLION PREGNANT WOMEN.
THERE WAS AN AMAZING IMPACT.
>> OVER THE 11 YEARS WE LIVED IN ZAMBIA, TREATMENT FOR HIV BECAME THE STANDARD OF CARE.
THE MEDICINES ZAMBIANS WERE RECEIVING WERE THE SAME MEDICATIONS YOU GET IN THE UNITED STATES.
PEOPLE WERE LIVING LONG PRODUCTIVE LIVES.
>> MY WIFE ELIZABETH AND I DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO MOVE BACK TO THE STATES.
WE DECIDED TO COME TO UNC CHAPEL HILL BECAUSE IT HAS A CONFLUENCE OF OUTSTANDING GLOBAL HEALTH AND INCREDIBLE OBGYN DEPARTMENT.
>> JEFF ARRIVED AND WAS INSTANTLY ABLE TO TRANSFER FUNDING PORTFOLIO FOR HIS WORK IN ZAMBIA AND AROUND THE WORLD TO UNC AND USED THE FUNDS TO MAKE MORE AND MORE DISCOVERIES.
TEN YEARS AGO HE BECAME INTERESTED IN USING TECHNOLOGY TO AVOID PRETERM BIRTH.
JEFF STARTED WORKING ON POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND.
WOMEN WHO GET PREGNANT IN THE UNITED STATES, THEY GET A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE BABY FROM THE ULTRASOUND TWO OR THREE TIMES USING MACHINES COSTING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS.
YOU MIGHT SAY WE HAVE THE MACHINES IN THE UNITED STATES.
NO, WE DON'T.

CLEARLY, NORTH CAROLINA UNIVERSITY WAS AN OUTLIER.
I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY AND WAS REALLY GLAD TO BE ABLE TO MEET WITH PRESIDENT HANS AND CHANCELLOR DIXON TO DISCUSS NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY MOVING FORWARD.
OUR TEAM HAS WORKED HARD WITH CHANCELLOR DIXON AND HER STAFF, SHE HAS BROUGHT A LOT OF NEW STAFF OVER THERE.

FEDERAL GRANTS, AN ISSUE TOP OF MIND OF UNIVERSITIES ON SPENDING.
WE RECOMMENDED THAT UNIVERSITIES BUDGET -- YOU CAN HAVE MULTIPLE BUDGET MODELS, HAVE ONE THAT APPLIES 15% FNA ON FEDERAL GRANTS MOVING FORWARD.
IF NOT, STEERING IN THAT MATTER, YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF IN A BUDGET CRUNCH.

I KNOW IT MATTERS TO OUR UNIVERSITIES WHICH THIS WEEK GATHERED STUDENT AFFAIRS STAFF AT A SYSTEM LED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONVENING IN BOONE TO DISCUSS THIS VERY TOPIC.
NUMBERS REINFORCE WHAT MANY OF US KNOW, THE AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION REPORTS THAT NEARLY HALF OF ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION.
NEARLY EIGHT IN TEN STUDENTS SAY THAT MENTAL OR EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES IMPACTED THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.
ANXIETY, STRESS, DEPRESSION, FAMILY ISSUES, AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE RANKED AS THE TOP FIVE MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS FOR RESPONDING STUDENTS.
WE MUST CONTINUE TO ASK WHY.
COLLEGE IS SUPPOSED TO BE CHALLENGING FOR OUR STUDENTS.
IT IS INTENDED TO BE RIGOROUS AND TO REFINE THE ACADEMIC ENTER INTERPERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS THAT HELP US MATURE.
WHAT IT IS NOT INTENDED TO DO, HOWEVER, IS TO PUSH STUDENTS TO UNHEALTHY LIMITS IN THE NAME OF ACHIEVEMENT.
THIS CHALLENGE ARISES EQUALLY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

THE FEELING THAT STUDENTS ARE NEVER ENOUGH FOLLOWS THEM FROM HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE AND LONG AFTER GRADUATION.
ONE SUCH STORY WALLACE ACCOUNTS IS THAT OF MOLLY, A TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR FROM WASHINGTON STATE.
SHE WAS AN ATHLETE AT HER HIGH SCHOOL.
TO FINISH HER HOMEWORK SHE WENT TO BED AT MIDNIGHT AND WOKE UP AT 3:00 A.M.
WHEN ASKED HOW SHE MAINTAINED STAMINA FOR TRACK PRACTICE, SHE SAID SHE WAS SO FIRED SHE RAN LAPS AROUND THE RACETRACK WITH HER EYES CLOSED.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE WAS AMANDA.
SHE HAD AN INTENSE SCHEDULE OF YEAR AROUND SPORTS, AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS AND AP COURSES.
IF SHE HAD ANYTHING LESS THAN AN A ON ASSIGNMENT, IT WAS MET WITH COLDNESS FROM HER PARENTS.
THE MESSAGE WAS CLEAR, WE KNOW YOU CAN DO BETTER.
DURING HIGH SCHOOL AMANDA TURNED TO ALCOHOL.
IN COLLEGE, ALCOHOL WAS NOT ENOUGH.
SHE TURNED TO DRUGS.
AFTER GRADUATION, SHE HAD WORKDAY DRINKING.
SHE WAS ON A DOWN WARD SPIRAL AND HIT ROCK BOTTOM AFTER DUI ARREST.
AFTER THERAPY AND YEARS OF UNHEALTHY VIEW OF PERFECTION, AMANDA TOLD WALLACE IT WAS A MINDSET SO INGRAINED SHE DOUBTED SHE WOULD SHAKE IT.
THESE ARE TWO EXAMPLES AMONG DOZENS OF OTHERS SHE HEARD.
HER RESEARCH SHOWS HOW ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND COLLEGE ARE RECEIVED THE PINNACLE OF SUCCESS EVEN AT THE EXPENSE OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL BEING.
STUDIES REVEAL THAT YOUNG PEOPLE RAISED IN HIGH PRESSURE ENVIRONMENTS OF ALL KINDS SUFFER FROM EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
RESEARCH FROM A STANFORD AFFILIATE INDICATES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NATIONWIDE ARE ANXIOUS ABOUT THEIR WORKLOAD AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS.
MANY LIKE AMANDA DEVELOP DISORDERS RELATED TO EATING AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
OTHERS HAVE CHRONIC STRESS.
WE MUST FIND A WAY TO ENCOURAGE EXCELLENCE THAT ENDURES.

OUR UNIVERSITIES HAVE HIGH STANDARDS AND STUDENTS SHOULD BE READY TO PUT IN THE WORK AND DO PART, HOWEVER CHILDREN STUDYING UNTIL DAWN IS NOT THE WAY.
I WORRY THAT WE LIVE IN A WORLD THAT FRAMES COLLEGE ACHIEVEMENT AS A PURPOSE AND PERSONAL IDENTITY.
MANY COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES INCLUDING SOME IN OUR OWN SYSTEM REINFORCE BY ACCESS TO CAMPUS AND MAJORS IN PURSUIT OF PRESTIGE.
HIGHER EDUCATION, INSTITUTION REPUTATION IS BASED ON HOW MANY TALENTED STUDENTS YOU KEEP OUT, NOT HOW MANY YOU PREPARE FOR SUCCESS.
WHEN I WAS YOUNG, I WAS EXPECTED TO WORK HARD AND DO MY BEST.
I WAS NOT, HOWEVER, EXPECTED TO HAVE A CAREER GOAL BY THE EIGHTH GRADE.
I DID NOT FEEL PRESSURED TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL EARLY OR COMPLETE A DOUBLE OR TRIPLE MAJOR IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS.
MY ACADEMICS WERE BALANCED AGAINST TIME SPENT WITH FAMILY, IN SPORTS AND AT SOCIAL FUNCTIONS, HOWEVER THOSE THINGS WERE NOT REQUIRED FOR MY COLLEGE APPLICATION TO SUBSTANTIAL DOUBT STAND OUT.
THEY WERE PART OF MY LIFE AND MY PERSONAL GROWTH.
I WAS LUCKY TO LEARN EARLY THAT A LARGE PART OF MY WORTH WAS CONTAINED IN EXPERIENCES THAT WOULD NEVER MAKE THEIR WAY ON TO A COLLEGE APPLICATION.
AS I LOOK AT THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS FACING OUR STUDENTS, I WONDER, WHAT CAN WE DO?
WHAT CAN WE DO TO REFORM THIS CULTURE OF ACHIEVEMENT AT ANY COST?
FOR THOSE OF US IN HIGHER PUBLIC EDUCATION, I BELIEVE WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE DEMAND SIDE, MESSAGES WE SEND YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE SUPPLY SIDE.
DO WE DO ENOUGH TO EXTEND THE B BENEFITS OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES TO THE PEOPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA AS THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES.
ON THE STUDENT SIDE, WE HAVE TO DO MORE TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THEY ARE WHRELSZED BLESSED TO LIVE IN A STATE WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL ARRAY OF AFFORDABLE CHOICES WHERE STUDENTS WORK HARD AND FIND THEIR CALLING.
OBSESSING ONE MAJOR IGNORES THE FACT THAT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF DEGREE PROGRAMS ACROSS THE SYSTEM SETS STUDENTS UP FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE AND THEIR CAREERS.
WHAT DO WE COMMUNICATE TO STUDENTS ABOUT PURPOSE AND WORTH?
ARE WE DOING WHAT WE CAN TO DEFINE LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT AS A LIFELONG VACATION NOT A ONE SHOT DEAL.

VERY IMPORTANT ITEM.
THIS YEAR MARKS FIVE YEARS SINCE PRESIDENT HANS WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE NORTH CAROLINA SYSTEM.
IN THE PAST HALF DECK TAID WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, SEVERAL HURRICANES AND TRAGIC EVENTS THAT IMPACTED OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITIES.
THROUGH IT ALL HE SHOWED STEADFAST VISION LEADING THE SYSTEM WITH INSIGHT AND STABILITY.
HE MADE CHANGES TO POSITION OUR UNIVERSITY AS WELL AND IMPROVED OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS AND THE PEOPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA.
THOSE OUTCOMES INCLUDE NO TUITION INCREASES INSTATE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, LOWER STUDENT DEBT, SIMPLIFIED AID, EASIER COLLEGE APPLICATIONS, HIGHER MILITARY STUDENT ENROLLMENT, INCREASED MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS AND IMPROVED CAMPUS SAFETY.
PRESIDENT HANS STRENGTHENED INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP BY NOMINATING 11 OUT STANDING CHANCELLORS TO LEAD THE FOLLOWING INSTITUTIONS, EAST CAROLINA, FAYETTEVILLE STATE, NORTH CAROLINA WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA ASHEVILLE, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL, WINSTON SALEM, APPALACHIAN, NC STATE UNIVERSITY AND FINALLY, ELIZABETH C CITY STATE UNIVERSITY.
BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR BUILDING REPAIRS AND INNOVATIONS, INSTIGATED A BUDGETING SYSTEM MORE TRANSPARENT AND EFFICIENT AND IN INCENTIVIZED PERFORMANCE OVER ENROLLMENT.
CHANGES PROTECT FREE EXPRESSION AND NONDISCRIMINATION, SUPPORT INSTITUTIONAL NEUTRALITY, IMPROVE CAMPUS SAFETY, PROGRAM REVIEWS AND AWARD CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING.
UNDER THE PRESIDENT'S LEADERSHIP, UNC HEALTHCARE FORMED A HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP WITH DUKE UNIVERSITY TO BUILD THE NORTH CAROLINA CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TO PROVIDE WORLD CLASS MEDICAL SERVICES TO FAMILIES FROM OUR STATE AND AROUND THE NATION.
HE LED THE FORMATION OF ECU HEALTH, INTEGRATED A CLINICAL NETWORK WITH HEALTH AND SECURED $420 MILLION STATE FUNDING FOR MUCH NEEDED CARE FOR NORTH CAROLINIANS IN RURAL AREAS.
HE WORKED TO EXPAND NURSING PROGRAMS AT 12 UNIVERSITY, SECURING $40 MILLION IN STATE FUNDS TO HELP MORE NURSES GET FROM ENROLLMENT TO GRADUATION AND INTO THE FIELD.
IN A WORLD LIKE THIS ONE WHERE THERE ARE MOVING PIECES AND OVERLAP BETWEEN BUSINESS, CULTURE AND POLITICS, PRESIDENT HANS HAS SHOWN LEADERSHIP TO MAKE OUR INSTITUTION SUCCESSFUL LONG-TERM.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH HIM IN THE YEARS TO COME.
BASED ON HIS PERFORMANCE, METRICS SET BY THE BOARD AND ASSESSMENT OF HIS LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT OF THE UNC SYSTEM, THE PRESIDENTIAL ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY RECOMMENDS THAT THIS BOARD APPROVE THE RESOLUTION BEFORE YOU.
ADDITIONALLY, THEY CONSIDERED A NEW PROPOSED TERM SHEET BASED ON THE PRESIDENT'S PERFORMANCE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING HIS FIRST FIVE YEAR TERM.
THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY RECOMMENDS THAT THIS BOARD APPROVE THE RENEWAL FOR A SECOND, FIVE-YEAR TERM UNDER THE NEW PROPOSED TERM SHEET BEFORE YOU.
AT THIS TIME, I'LL ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THE RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A ONE TIME INCENTIVE PAYMENT FOR THE PRESIDENT IN THE AMOUNT OF $442,200 TO BE MAID MADE AS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE SENIOR ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER RETIREMENT ACCOUNT AND SECOND FIVE YEAR TERM UNDER THE NEW PROPOSED TERM SHEET.
