[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] The number 7 Grand Valley State Lakers dominated the battle.
The Valley taking down second on Valley state 49 to 17 the Lakers now for an overall and one unknowingly act play.
Here to talk about steam head coach Matt Mitchell coach.
Last week we talked about how all 3 phases really got involved with the only way you can step that up a notch.
All 3 score a touchdown in this one.
A dominating game in all 3 phases telling, which is talking to.
>> Yeah, it was awesome.
Again, awesome start.
I really appreciate a lot of our fans traveled.
A great day, a great weather.
But, you know, we were able to take the ball 95 yards on pretty much our first offensive possession and had 3 explosive plays a big play today.
But Anderson, another Darryl Johnson, a freshman pass of the middle.
The bison Walser senior leader punch things and so 7.
Nothing on the road.
It really got us off the start.
We've done that.
I think our offense has been really efficient.
All 4 games like scoring on the first possession or give us great field position.
And we've kind of rolled from there.
So that particular game.
You know, I thought we only have 50 plays offensively but had over 400 yards really efficient like hate is continuing to improve.
He showed a lot of poise in the pocket throwing the ball.
We agape.
Great pass protection, 5 figures.
The theme of the day was the fact that we are very explosive in the pass game.
Now supported Memphis is coming out the Tech in the want to try to continue to improve upon.
And as you mentioned, played enough defense, you know, little disappointed, a few things, especially into the half and played great on special teams.
Besides one part return.
Josh Corbett was a factor.
Multiple touchbacks mayall's extra points was really good putting the ball and then we have the big block scoop and score for a touchdown.
That was the, you know, making a play on special teams also, which of course makes a special teams coordinator happy but want to go back to that first drive because of the 29 yard.
Touchdown run by Bryce young wall to talk about all the time.
>> He's a vocal leader for him to be the one that sets that tone also on the field had to be big because the offer that stark huge in.
You know, Bryce is the heart and soul of this team, this guy's been around the block.
You see a lot of Lakers football and he's done an unbelievable job of leading this team.
He is a captain but he's our most vocal leader across the board and he really gets us going.
I would say to like he has us going Tuesday, Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday's is not just the Saturday thing.
He is a lot us to really had quality practice is offense feel like they have awesome week of practice.
And I think Bryce is the one is pushing guys to be the best you can be.
So those things are happening.
Kind of behind the scenes.
You have a guy that maybe isn't the most talented running back is I'm probably going to lead us necessarily yards rushing.
But as a powerful force for this football team.
Right now.
It was a dominating 1st half until that last moment.
Like you said to the hail Mary, all the sudden to 18 point game is not quite over.
Obviously.
Interesting to see how that 3rd quarter play out.
You guys have a 6 minute, 80 yard drive that really kind of felt like the nail in the coffin 100%, you know, into focus on the end of the half.
You know, we getting to play ball.
We have a personal foul, a stupid penalty that we've got to clean up and then even on the the prevent we were great and that a teachable moment because we didn't have guys around to the football in case a way to score the touchdown.
So that was something that didn't feel good having the halftime locker room even though, you know, should been up 20 to 3 of 2010.
But as you mentioned, the offense came comes out.
Does a great job of the drive convert.
Some 3rd downs were much better running the ball and stopping the run in the 2nd half.
And that drive really was kind of a back breaker regards the time off the clock punching for a touchdown.
You just kind of felt like any momentum that was gained at the end of the 1st half by side by was extinguished with that drive.
>> Really good time to finally win a coin toss.
But so few cars were missing.
3 of your top 5 wide receivers in this game as well as the Kyle.
Not with a deep touchdown catch Cody tyranny on absolute bomb from Cal and the cop, by the way, to see those younger receivers get in the mix in this offensive game had a huge that it was awesome.
You know, you're out without John Johnson.
Jacob Miller in court Hoover due to some injuries.
I thought coach Rountree and the younger receivers did a great job.
Just kind of embracing what they needed to do.
You know, we mentioned this in the post-game deal with mean you you know, we dress 5 freshman that game and had not played a lot of those guys pull about special teams but not 10 receptions of those guys.
And really, you know, awesome performance by those guys.
So those can all help us strengthens our receiving corps moving forward, have a more viable threats.
And I think what we did to has put a product on tape Saturday that will have defense of quarters.
Defensive players again, a little concerned because we had some people over the top got behind him.
Also a great job with some underneath pattern, some crossing routes to some things on the shower to really stretched in the passing game with a lot of different guys catch the ball.
Not a one-dimensional passing offense.
Looking at one person or one specific schemes.
I think this performance Saturday.
We'll have a residual effect on the season.
It was really a diverse offense.
Even Scott Cooper gets in the end zone for a touchdown as well.
Let's go back to the offensive line.
You mentioned a bit but you go back.
Look at that Kyle not touchdown.
I mean, Kate could take a nap.
Got to stand, which is stepping up and forget all day to throw it seem like that was something offensive line was imposing their will afternoon.
They did a great job.
And again, that's that out.
The defensive line.
You know, I think that relied primarily throughout the previous games on only rushing for and kind of put on the 4 men pass rusher their talent.
And so, you know, we blocked up before extremely well with our offensive line.
I think we had one sack and a miss protection.
But other than that, we're really, really clean on the day.
I think that pocket that comfortability allowed us for the time to do some of those things in the pass game.
Now we understand 2 people see that the I start bringing pressure that will come pressure because if we can not hit in the run game or get something happens.
Screens are short throws, then we will have space in the back in to try to take advantage of it.
So kudos to offensive line played really well on Saturday really pleased with how their continued progress.
Again, you got member.
We have one senior and 4 sophomore starting offensive line.
You know, as we take a look at the totality of our offense.
Really only have 2 seniors that are playing a ton right now in regards to brush on walls and even culverts and its younger crews continue to improve coach.
We can't get out here without mentioning this 0 turnovers on the day you win the turnover battle against the team is number one in the country in turnover margin.
Huge.
And we talked about that in my radio show.
You high that we thought that was going to be the stat of the deal.
And I you know, you guys did a great job by Feigin.
That's everybody on offense.
Ball.
Security is great.
Kate make great decisions.
And so we were plus 3, you know, we get basically to on defense.
>> Again, one on special teams.
And, you know, we're able to be really productive.
And that's why I think the score got to his because the turnover differential huge win on the road in a tough environment awesome to move to 4.
No one unknowingly act player back home this weekend for Laker family day.
We'll talk about it on the other side.
The timeout are today with awesome.
We're right back with more on the Grand Valley.
State sports report [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Grand Valley State football is back in the comfy confines of lumber Stadium this Saturday night to take on the North.
Would Timberwolves 07:00PM kickoff to be a big crowd with Laker family day head coach Matt Mitchell back with us coach looking for to get back to level stating that 100% into 2 road trips on the appeal.
An order very hostile environment.
Be good to get back home.
Love those night games, too.
In terms of atmosphere.
Weather looks great.
Hopefully get a ton of people out kind of support our team as we enter the next next next game Laker family day is always a great tradition of Grand Valley State always have gigantic crowd looking for really getting that big atmosphere back.
But the crowds been really good at Liberty stadium so far this year in general have that they have.
And I think part of that, too, as the covid year.
You know, kind everybody have the year where we didn't have a lot of Laker football.
And so the first 2 games, great special student section give them a ton of credit.
Lacrosse game really stuck in there all the way to the 4th quarter.
And you know, we love playing at home looking for that opportunity.
The atmosphere is always great.
But obviously got to take care of business on the field as well.
North.
What's coming to town talking about what they do offensively.
They really rely on casual Goldsmith, who is the running back.
He's had some successful game so far early in the season.
So he's been a catalyst for their offense production.
I think those things have been really good on special teams at a 100 yard kickoff return last weekend against for state.
They block some Ponce.
They stay super aggressive on special teams, too.
So the running attack.
Some special teams play and usually pretty good.
Up front.
I think last weekend to give up a few passing yards against for state.
You know, we've got to kind of dig in on that.
But for us, this is an opportunity with northwood accident ugly act heading to the G Mac a potential last time a Grand Valley State may play northwood University, you know, so we have to recognize that appreciate the history and tradition.
There's been a lot of great contest between these 2 teams and try and former guys, this may be the last coal.
So let's take advantage of it.
Northwood always runs that different offense than usually season.
How do you adjust enough kind of a short week coming off a pro style offense like citing about to get ready for that run-heavy style up north but presents.
Well, that's one thing I you know, we really like made a scheme change defensively as I think our scheme is adaptable to be able to handle some different things week to week.
And so, you know, there's some game planning that will occur and go on.
But we're in the group now the regular season, our schedule, you know about Monday, guys get in their off day.
Watch tape on Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday or practice Friars walk to the play games on Saturday.
That's where really like about not having a bye week in the season.
You get this flow.
You get the schedule now we're at home.
So it's kind of getting the floor and prepare for northwood and that put our kids in the best position possible succeed.
Now they are for weeks and actually playing football again.
How fast did that game flow game week flow come back to the team after missing all of last year.
Yeah, that's a great point.
And I think it was something that we had to teach and learn the guys had to learn.
We had teachers coaches because, you know, you still look at this roster.
We have a lot of younger players in this roster that have never really been through a full season before.
So this you know, the cycles of things.
I think rest recovery, making sure we're at our best is really important to know we left on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I think that's important.
Part of what we're doing to try to extend our season out, have a long season.
And so there's a lot that goes goes into it.
And that's that's something does not mean besides teaching plays and schemes.
The techniques were trying to teach our guys the proper approach to be your best on.
You know, now 10 Saturday us we're in a sport where you can't afford to trip up on a Saturday you might find yourself options limited at the end of the season.
So you have to be on point.
This isn't a sport like basketball, you can lose a couple games.
We can't afford to do that.
So these Florida weeks is really important to hammer that home.
We're certainly excited to get back to LeBron stadium should be a huge crowd, a great atmosphere.
The Saturday.
Looking forward to a coach.
Thanks for time to look as we take shape.
Don't go away.
The Grand Valley State supporter.
But we're right back after this.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> Laker volleyball has a huge week sweeping both Parkside and pretty Northwestern their first home matches of 2021 that he now sits at 5, 1, in conference play.
And joining us now to talk about steam as head coach Jason Johnson and coach.
Finally back in your home gym for a couple of matches.
>> How did it feel to play at home as a great.
You know, obviously we had an abbreviated season last spring.
We had some home matches, but it was the first time we actually at fans on the floor close to the the court in the environment was a lot of fun to be a part of.
>> It's also about the atmosphere.
Over 300 people have both of these games.
Like you said, that's the first time you had people in the stands.
And while the pep band going all the atmosphere that comes with that.
How is that for your team.
>> It was a lot of fun.
And obviously I think our team was able to feed off that energy wise.
I think a little bit of it were nerves early on.
Gets Parkside as far as just be excited nervous, not the not the nerves of playing a match, but more the excited of oh my goodness.
My fans family friends were all in the stands.
And so kind of getting used to that environment.
Again.
It was awesome to have everybody back and you can play Parkside on Saturday.
And if there were nerves didn't really show with a 3 nothing win.
But that first set was back and forth for quite a bit was to pull out the 2523 set to kind of whether those nerves and get that first set victory.
How important that even set the tone for the whole weekend.
Again, I think any time you get off to an early start.
The first site can be able to win that.
It just sets it up for the rest of the match.
You know, obviously we've gone 5 sets of numerous matches this year.
So it's not that it's a and all to winning a match.
But I think it definitely helps you call get into a rhythm, get into a flow of the match was a little more decisive as he went that 3rd set with 25 to 10 was any kind of conversation about, hey, let's finish this right here.
Get out of here in 3 sets and kind of learn how to finish off an opponent.
Yeah, I think that was part of it.
The other part was just again staying focused on one point at a time and being able to get into a better flow.
I think as the match went on, we felt more comfortable defensively about what we're trying to do.
I think offensively we were able to stay into a better rhythm as the match went on your middle seemed to really have some diversity in this matter.
It would go a little deeper with it.
What you like about this, what you saw from the middle blockers, not giving us part.
You know, one of the things we've talked about all year is we have a lot of depth in the middle now to our players and point, most of the matches this year because they've earned that opportunity.
But I think we've had kids in practice every day challenging those 2.
And I think this is a great opportunity to allow them to get that chance.
And I thought they did a great job with that.
They certainly did you guys when the first when you turn around the next day.
The Saturday, Sunday, both at 01:00PM little bit different than it's been in the past.
But how did you adjust to that.
24 hours.
Exactly.
Between the 2 met.
You know, I think Saturday was a little more difficult because it's so early on a Saturday.
We're just not causing the plane quite that early.
But I think having the 24 hour turnaround was nice.
I think our kids were fresh on Sunday.
I think obviously getting back in the gym, having the same routine as far as up the same time pre-game at same time.
I thought went well.
I thought we played well against Purdue.
Obviously set to kind of was a little closer than we would have liked.
But I think Purdue had a lot to do with that as well.
Yeah.
I mean produce what you said it last week.
13, the plays really hard.
They're going to grind.
So to know you're going into a team like that, especially in the back into the weekend.
But was the conversation with a team that has got to be ready to really play for physical in this one.
Even though whatever the record says don't worry about that.
So yeah, I think the 2 things we try to get across our kids and points early.
When you get it against a team that wants to extend points wants to work hard and force you into being it clean with your offense.
It's about ending points early trying to get into those long rallies, trying to give them more opportunities and what they need.
And so that was part of our talk early on.
I thought that one went really well with that.
I thought we were in control offensively.
I thought our serving got them into a some difficult situations early.
But that obviously said to, you know, we kind of backed down a little bit with our offense, the fish and sea as well as are serving and I thought Purdue did a great job.
>> We mentioned those medals in the first day.
But I mean, David West had a really good weekend overall for you guys.
And she's one of those ones are talking about right.
Has been really good in practice finally got a chance really to shine this weekend.
>> Yes, she does a great job day in and day out of just pushing peoples brings a ton of energy to the floor, whether it's in practice ordering a match.
And so the opportunity to get her him this weekend.
Get her those game experiences and know that we we can go 2, 3, 4, deep in that position if necessary.
>> When you look at some of the other players that really stepped up this becoming the eye-popping number coach Lisa Sullivan hit 8.75 in a match on Sunday and what was working for her.
>> Well, I think she was a little rest.
Didn't want to come in and be able to get some points.
But on the board.
So yeah, she obviously had a great job, did a great job coming in.
I was very happy with the response that she was able to bring to the floor.
As I said, set to we're starting a little bit trying to find points, trying to get into rhythm and flow.
And I thought Lisa kind of solidified everything once we are in the game.
We always talk about offense is really easy to write.
You look at the numbers.
But in terms of the defense to serve receive the passing.
How did you think your team adjusted this week that something that, you know, we can't see in this.
That's right.
Yeah, I think service see passing was very, very good this weekend.
I think it shows up.
>> Most of the time you're offensive numbers when your offensive numbers are high, your service.
The passing typically is very good.
I thought our defense was good.
Not great.
It has been a focus of ours of trying to get the system a little bit shirt off.
And I think we're going to be focusing on that again this week as we head into next weekend.
Really good start an ugly act 5, 1, this is important now because the Midwest region crossover is coming up.
So if you could for our viewers that don't quite understand what that importance of that is getting into the upper echelon.
What's the importance of this hot start heading into that region across the I think there's a couple different things.
The first is you're trying to get into regional berth.
And you know, 2 different ways of getting in or an automatic bid or an at-large that an getting off to a good start allows you to be in that top half going into the regional tournament in 2 weeks.
You need to be in that top half to play other teams in the 3 other conferences that are in our region in the top half in order to be able to put yourself in that position so that if you don't get the automatic qualifier, you need to get the at-large bid you want to have as many wins against regional opponents as you can to help separate yourself in that conversation.
>> Really well, explain.
And that's exactly what you've done so far.
5, 1, 1, more week to go until that cross over.
But we're glad to have you back on the show.
Coach got that back.
Have you back at home.
Congratulations on a great weekend.
Thanks to create it.
Don't touch that remote.
We'll be right back with more of the Grand Valley.
State sports report after this [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] GSU cross country standout Hannah Becker is not only a GPS you a contender on the national stage in cross country just was made her experience at Grand Valley, one that will take with her after her running career.
Tom clearly has the story.
>> Bruins got a travel bag.
Good to go.
Everyone's got shirts.
Everyone's got uniforms spikes.
>> Jerry baltas knows how fickle recruiting athletes can be a few years ago he plucked distance runner.
Jessie Becker from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to join the Lakers little the ball to snow, though.
He'd eventually get Hannah rose qaeda Allendale be a Wheaton College in Illinois.
Hannah it turns out was just his high school sweetheart and she's now Hannah Becker after her wedding to Jesse this summer.
>> We've had a lot of our student athletes get married over time.
You know, hand in just the air.
It's interesting dynamic that mean they were high school sweethearts and together and you know, went separate ways and then came back together.
So, you know, it's it's neat to see all those different day dynamics play out.
>> The Packers have already enjoyed the cross country season this year celebrating a man's win at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State and the women's runner-up finish at the same meet and for Hannah that's no less than anyone's expected after last year's track season she had second 5th place finishes at the outdoor nationals and was named the Midwest track athlete of the year.
Something she attributes in part to being with Jesse here in their adopted home state.
>> It's been fun to take a step up in training on into division 2.
And, you know, really invest a lot of time and energy into running.
But they get to see the returns of that.
And that's a huge busing.
I'm really thankful for it.
>> And is versatility and the track was a big reason why the Laker women nearly captured a national title and track this past spring finishing second behind the zoo's.
A Pacific, a runner-up finish in the meat was in the steeplechase and her coach says natural ability coupled with domestic bliss could make this year even better.
>> Jesse backers have been an incredible leader on our men's team performer.
Now Hannah stepped in last year did incredible things and the track and a great start at the Michigan State me just getting started.
She will get better every time out the season.
>> Many racers long-distance training can be anything from a grind to overwhelming, which is why a good support system is essential.
But for him, the move to Allendale in Division 2 has given her more than just a new last name.
>> It is helpful to be in a relationship or be married to someone that's also run or other helps us understand the lifestyle and the schedule fight a bit more because running is a commitment.
We do have to invest a lot into that.
And so it's nice, you know, have practice at the same times or understand when one of us has to get up early for a morning practice.
>> Next up, a Laker cross country teams is immediate Lewis University in romeoville, Illinois.
Romeoville sounds like the perfect spot for Grande, Valley's husband and wife team to write a new happier ending to that old Shakespearean tale.
The Grand Valley State sports report on time clearing.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> Dsu women soccer split their matches over the weekend.
The Lakers would beat northwood on Friday night, then returned home to tie Ferris state.
2 to one Sunday afternoon in us now to talk about the team's head coach Jim Conlan coach knew this would be a tough weekend.
2 one-loss teams, one receiving votes in the national poll.
The other nationally ranked senior team had to be ready to use satire to handle this week in these 2 games.
>> Yeah, that is a great weekend to test where we're at going into October.
You know, September.
You're always working a lot of different things and we had 2 great opponents to match up with this weekend.
So I thought we came out of it.
Learn a lot of lessons and ready to move forward.
>> As you evaluate now, it's been a month since the season began your first month as head coach or how you about the growth of this team so far.
>> Yeah.
I think the growth just continues right now.
You know, when you're dealing with health and rotations informations and every a little nuance pieces that were trying to put together.
I think we're still moving one day at a time.
One week at a time.
I don't know if we've settled into a full rhythm of what our best soccer is yet.
But I think we're getting pretty close and we're seeing a lot of gifts from a lot of different athletes show themselves and the future's bright.
>> Let's talk about the 2 games this week to start going to north of that's a tough field to go play it a little bit smaller at a grass field.
North was always very physical, especially on their home field.
You get the 2 nothing when the 2 2nd half goals are huge for you guys and Greta really made it happen right off the bat that 2nd half.
What was the conversation like it have time to get guys on the front foot there in the second.
>> Yeah, we knew we got northwood and they be very organized.
And Chelsea had a good game plan there.
They were.
I'm ready to counter some of the tactics that we were going after.
And then they said coming out of halftime.
The team came out with some extra focus on exactly what they were capable of doing.
And Greta, putting, you know, the ball away helped us early on that 2nd half to get our rhythm and our feet underneath us.
>> Always good to get one go.
But get 2 goals in rapid succession like that.
What does that do to kind of deflate the other opponent give you guys kind of ability to elevate for the rest of the game.
>> Yeah, I think any time you put on the back of the net.
It changes the dynamic of the game of soccer.
You know, there's a whole lot of goals scored in our sport.
But, you know, you still got to stay focused and play the entire 90 minutes in every 1000 offense, defense and transitions.
I think when we got up to go, that allowed us to.
>> Continue movements in all 3 of those facets will 90 minutes wasn't enough on Sunday.
Fair state comes to town, number one in the nation versus number 11 in the nation on ESPN.
3 big building for this game and the kind of lived up to the billing didn't.
>> Yeah, it was a really good soccer match, especially if you're a fan and was a lot of different action now they got it.
But I I really appreciate the resolve of our women to come back and get the result they got.
I think it also opened the door for some more learning moments for us and we're excited to get back to the pitch and train this week to get ready for next weekend.
>> You guys get on the front to the front foot towards the end there.
You had a flurry of chances of finally and with Greta making a great individual effort to you guys back in it then scoring off of the set piece.
Both go to grad is go real fast because you kind of made it happened.
One V one on her own.
She has that highlight real shot one of that do the kind of re energize your team in the 83rd minute.
>> Yeah.
I thought right before Greta got the ball.
We have really continued find people's feet and move the ball in the spaces we wanted to.
So it ultimately ended up on Greta, after we had several short little passes that they combine to get the defense kind of s#*#*#*#*#* over in one direction and then Greta, once you got on our foot, got her defender personally where she won it and then put them on the back of the net.
So it was a great effort by Greta.
But the build-up to get the ball into that point was a big moment for us.
It seems like you start using more of the right side and try to use that combination.
Past thought Hillary did a really nice job down that flank to kind of for some things down the side was that a concerted effort to try to play the wings will bit more down the stretch.
That was kind of a message to the team to find those spaces late against a good bears defensive team.
I think we're just trying to find the open person and not just force it into a particular space.
But you know, it ended up I think the way fares was compact.
The wings were the open person and then we can find them and play off of that.
That allowed to opportunities to to move.
So as fundamentals, it sounds anyway, just to kind of find the open person and then connect with them and build.
>> Well, it worked out for a 2 to draw you guys stay undefeated.
Now.
Only one game this week.
It's a big one.
Davenport.
The crosstown showdown comes to town and it's senior night in a very emotional night, especially with not having won last year.
You got to basically huge classes of a senior class coming to celebrate and be a fun Friday night now.
>> Yeah, I think right now it's going to be just a really special night.
