I'm your host Jake Lee D tvs.
You cross country proved they were the best in the Midwest this weekend picking up a Midwest Regional championship GSU football ran through the Wayne state Warriors to go 81 on the season.
Dsu women soccer took a win and a tie this weekend as they look ahead to the glee actor.
And this week our feature highlights the GSU men's basketball team as they start their season this week.
Rocket in Laker nation is the Grand Valley State sport report starts right now.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] The Grand Valley State, men's and women's cross country teams proved once again that their best in the Midwest that the N C a D to Midwest Regional championships.
Both teams picked up the win in Evansville on the backs of some impressive performances from their student athletes and is now talk about a squat as head coach Jerry ball to Suncoast.
This was a weekend really show the depth the both of your squad.
How's the weekend for you.
>> Yeah.
Great weekend for us.
You know that we treated as a business trip.
We've got 3 goals going down.
Number ones in advance to then say championships, which to do that automatically finish in the top 3 number to try to run a little bit more conservatively to leave a little gas in the tank hopefully come out feeling healthy and ready to go.
And then number 3 compete for the win that presented itself in.
Fortunately, we're able to do all 3 things.
Yeah.
We set a 3 of our guys.
And on the men's side for various reasons, had some guys step up on the back and Saint Martin's was outstanding for us along with the rest of the crew.
So was good.
You know that to set 3 guys and one by 50 or 60 points shows are depth and the quality of our student athletes and our women as well.
That real solid effort didn't run.
Natalie graver, she'll be in at the National meeting going.
And I think when my 6070, points, very, very positive weekend for us.
>> Absolutely.
Let's start with the menu advance that 10 K want to get to the boy said that that's a spot where your team really shines what it what makes it so much better for your team to run that 10 K for your Mets.
I went with focus on it all year long.
You know, we train for that at a higher level.
So maybe earlier in the season we don't look as good over 8 K in the middle of the season because we're training at such a high level in preparation for the bumped it to the 10 K. So in other factors use, we've got some older runners on the team because we richer early on and throw covid in their last year with no summer kids to have to redshirt.
So, you know, on paper, we look younger elegibility wise, but most of our athletes are 4th 50 years and a 6 year and they're so that they just got more years of training and strength under their belt.
>> You mentioned a few of the top men's runners not running but entered China steps up big time for he take second overall by an eyelash really good race for him with a personal-best, I believe, right.
>> Yeah, of course is in great condition and that condition, the weather was perfect.
So the best best conditions we had all all year.
So that was great for student athletes to get out there, not trudge through the mud like we did a conference, but yet Tanner and a great race.
Really controlled could have probably won rather easily.
But, you know, we.
>> We really hold try to hold back a little bit to not run into any injuries are coming out super tired so he could have pulled away.
I'm very confident, but they just ran it in together.
So credit to the tenor and the second all runner to not run each other into the ground.
So they'll be ready to go bouncing back for another 10 K in 2 weeks, which which is not easy to do.
>> Absolutely.
So you get 5 all-region performers on both sides go to the women's side now headed back are leading the way for you once again, she's been a leader for you all season long.
Yeah, Hannah Ann and cloudy of work.
>> Great together they they pretty much Stephanie side by side as well.
So just ran together, rain pretty controlled all the way.
And so executed race playing great as did that tear and chap Cone Casey right now ran side by side the whole way.
So it's always great when you can latch on to teammate and race together and sort of work with each other for each other along.
So there are great Lucy ran a great race as well as are our 5th runner.
So that was great to see.
And then on the flip side, we're really didn't do that.
And the guy said we're spread out the whole way.
We went out faster.
We we really wanted to are needed to just the way the race unfolded.
And we just got so pretty much all the way through which Jay clear and literally last 4 miles of the race by himself with no one around and which is not easy to do.
So credit to him to really stay locked in.
And we after 2 miles and settled in and ran pretty controlled the rest of the way in.
>> 20 consecutive Midwest Regional crowds out an unbelievable run by this program night turn your attention to nationals down in Tampa.
What's the next couple of weeks looking like as you as you said to bounce back for another race in 2 weeks is not easy.
>> Yes.
So, you know, we try to run a little bit controlled or conservatives so we can get back to work this.
We can to get to more good sessions and Tuesday will be a good long aerobic build for us.
And then our last fine tune will be Friday run and get after it a little bit to actually a train a little bit more indoors.
Weather is beautiful outside.
So you could say why.
Why would you not go outside if the temperatures are warm enough, we will, but we're down in Tampa.
So the you know, most likely the temperatures are going to be in the 70's, maybe 80.
So we need to do everything to prepare our bodies to to handle the heat and humidity once we get down there.
So we'll fine tune this week and then freshen up next week, get down to Tampa and be ready to compete at a high level.
>> That makes a lot of sense because we talk about the 3 levels, right.
The glee actor region on the nationals.
Each of the first 2, you're still kind of keep something in the tank getting ready for this national.
What's the difference in the mindset.
You know, maybe you're going all out for a national championship.
This one is opposed to the other 2 are kind of playing the long game.
Yeah.
Fine line between, you know, at the conference meet was sort of wanted to get after it one last time to tap the system and compete at a high level and really, really hard.
We did that.
But not not ideal conditions with the mud.
So it just totally different from Payson standpoint.
But yet keeping the volume, the mileage up the intensity up in workouts through the conference and regional meet is important for us so that we're at our peak in and that at our fitness point at the end of the year.
Wears some other teens are backing off for the conference meet to try to finish as high as possible are definitely back an offer the regional meet just to make it to the National meat.
So we've been in a good position that allows us to really target our training for the and Golden State championships.
The last race of the season.
More looking forward to in just a couple of weeks down in Tampa will talk to real soon.
Best of luck down thanks to it.
Don't touch that remote.
We're back with more of the Grand Valley.
State sports report right after this.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> Number 7 Grand Valley State improved its record to 81 overall and 5 in one ugly act act with an impressive 62 to 13 victory at Wayne state Saturday when the state will now host Davenport the regular season finale next Saturday letter stadium to us now to talk about the team's head coach Matt Mitchell and coach.
We start with the defense the last few weeks let slip around their offense.
Maybe place best game of the year this week.
>> Yet played great.
It was got a great start son was in fact an opening kickoff kind of bubble that started on the 11 yard line but went right down the field.
They okay.
Peterson engine.
The opening drive both with his arm or his feet was really explosive.
Got off to the, you know, the 7 a lead and then I think the big key for us was, you know, we get a couple 3rd downs defensively in the 1st quarter.
But we had a we had a string of 9 straight possessions where we got off the field on 3rd down created some field position with the wind got the ball at midfield quite a bit and kept staying aggressive offensively, you know, really points that touchdown right before the half we went for fake field goal.
They called a timeout and then we went out and then from Jakes layers back after missing the last 5 weeks for a touchdown.
And that was really big force o K Pietersen played great.
I think probably his best game.
Regards deficiency on the ground in the air.
No turnovers for offense which is really massive statistic for us which we've had a little problem that are in the season and really got the ground game going with, you know, Harry Kane BCN trickery both had some explosive runs with no brakes.
Young walls in the game to see those 2 running backs step up the way they did.
That seems really big for the stable of running backs.
It was good all year, but it kind of lacking the last couple of weeks.
Yeah.
I think the thing it was lack of pride last couple weeks.
And I think is a fullness or the backs didn't have a lot of explosive runs.
I think one thing that popped up on the tape once on Sunday was a combination of factors are receivers blocked extremely well on the perimeter really covered some guys up.
And also we made some guys miss in the back into Wayne State's defense put our foot the ground.
What a bucks runs.
He made.
2 guys mess on the way to the end zone.
And then we were really do a good job of kind of our fly sweep package to and the backs are being extremely unselfish in that package.
Being the lead had getting out on the perimeter, getting some guys blocked in the perimeter.
And we had a really big day with that package.
Cody Tierney, I'm really had a lot of Kerry slash receptions because it's of to.
Yeah.
And, you know, Cal not had a couple nice runs and there are some guys really stepped up and did some good things there.
So same thing really proud of our guys.
As I said, it might we.
You know, we had no by Sean walls.
He will be back in Grant Dempster opened back in on for channel.
Think you could call percent is probably done for the season are starting 2 time all conference center on rise and he'll be back.
So really had some younger guys.
You know, really kind of step up and a lot of freshmen sophomores that provided to those of, you know, 62 points to give a shout out the defense because they scored a touchdown to and so really inefficient day for us.
Offensively.
You mentioned in your tweet.
No seniors on the offensive side of.
I want to get out and take Miller is welcome.
But he was able to do down the field.
We haven't seen him be that explosive a downfield threat yet that you're really did say was that the practice.
I completely agree and I don't forget to factor that he had injured his hamstring a part of the second about the state game and it was a stretch about 3 games where he didn't play a lot.
Even sees me coming back.
He's been a little limited in regards to just his hamstring stretching down the field but 100% healthy and instruction of the ball down the field.
That was really good to see that.
You go on the other side, you mentioned the wind playing a big factor.
But this is one of the good special teams games of the year for you as well.
Coached yeah.
Great field position with our special teams.
I thought we handled the win.
She's extended the wind extremely well.
Both kickoff and kickoff return.
Same thing with part return really set up some field position and that was key for defense.
You know, short fields for offense longer feels for them have to drive.
Yeah.
We talked about all week leading up to this Wayne state ended your season in 2019.
There's a lot circling around in the media on the East side of the state to go get the synthetic when the way you guys didn't celebrate with a wooden shoes.
Trophy coming back to Allendale.
That's like a big moment for the team camaraderie.
Why does why was there was a lot of emotion going into the game.
You know, there been the trophy had been residing over there, you know, with that with the pandemic from most 2 years.
So I think we felt a great push to get that back.
We also knew that, you know, Wednesday was better than the record.
We knew that, you know, we really want to be one of 28 teams left standing for the postseason playoff announcement.
So there's a lot there.
And then there's lot of our players and some coaches after connections back to the side of the state.
And so it's kind of a homecoming for several guys that out our roster and you can kind of feel some of that emotion for them coming back to the to their side.
The state in the pre-game warm-up and a lot before the game you mentioned even culberson real quick.
I do want to talk about that offensive.
Like a lot of those biggest boost of runs a recent Kaiser on touch going through that first layer out of the offensive line.
And just this weekend to a new center kind of get to do it on the fly against Michigan Tech right now to see the full week of preparation that I think that's the biggest key.
I, you know, pre sheet that you recognize that as we did a full week of prep was 2 guys at center calibrate Blake Jones, a true freshman did a great job.
And also Brian Buckman who been a little bit banged up as kind of get back healthy to do so use 2 guys.
You know, we kind of know their strengths internally as coaches that we try to do some things that way.
But I would say it was really impressed with the snaps.
You don't.
You can't take that for granted sometimes.
And they had some really big into the live in.
But for that fly sweep game, you've got to have great time of year snaps because we don't want to fly sweep to happen too early because they can go to the defense, got a little bit quicker.
And I thought both guys did a really good job against way states front for the first time really put a lot of football this season.
>> I completely agree.
And that's great news going into now.
The final week of the regular just I can't believe it's hard to hear coach to come back home one final time Saturday.
01:00PM host Davenport.
It's always emotional playing that crossed County.
Can we expect this week.
>> But Davenport has very good defense.
You know, I know you take a look at the record and you know, you don't think may be necessary.
This is the greatest team.
But their defense is very, very active.
They lead the league in pass defense only given up 116 yards.
A game and pass defense.
And I think probably tough part is they have got a whole lot of help from their offense.
Their offense has had a lot of rotations of quarterbacks.
4 different quarterbacks up late.
I assume because injuries and lot of different things that happened, but they haven't had a lot of stability.
The quarterback position so have not scored a lot of points, but to give their defense a tremendous amount of credit.
They're forced to be on the field quite a bit.
Very aggressive are active.
They have some a lot of good athletes on defense.
And so I think this will present a really big challenge for offense.
You just in terms of just the athleticism, the scheme of some of the things that kind of force you to do and now looking for for the next step.
And like I said, just trying to finish off and find ourselves.
You know that Sunday night after the game want to 28.
>> He went one owe it to the last 3 weeks.
One morning sun is up in a really good position.
Best of luck this week.
To thanks as always.
We thought, OK, thank you.
Don't go away.
The Granite state support for continues right after this.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] Number one ranked GSU women soccer found himself with a win and a tie this weekend.
Defeating North.
But on Friday before playing to a draw against their state on Sunday to look forward to the glee actor.
Not this weekend.
As I started Parkside tomorrow.
Join us now as head coach Jim Conlan coach.
You've already wrapped up ugly act regular season going into this weekend, but still plenty to play for what is even a team this week.
>> I thought our team played well prepared.
Well and just came out and executed the things we're trying to do this weekend in a week.
That is a little abnormal like that.
We already had the title.
Take care.
But we obviously are still trying to make sure we're playing to the best of our abilities.
So a good week for our lives.
>> Absolutely.
Let's start on Friday.
The 3 nothing win against northwood, you know, deal and pellet.
He's really, really good up.
Top guys were able to limit her.
But was the defensive strategy to kind of keep her out of the net and how to execute it.
>> Yeah, I think defenders were doing a good job of understanding where one of them was in positioning the rest of them which allowed none of our defenders to be on islands and support each other to minimize a good attacker.
>> Yeah.
There's a couple rotations at center.
Back to see what Abby will ever has done to kind of lead that center back group.
Now how it's evolved as a leader in that role as this year's progressed.
>> He's a great player and she continues to work with the women around her.
She has had couple different center back to next to where different outside back.
So she's she's there to use her voice, her actions and try keep people organized in that time and we need that defensive line.
>> We've talked about sets Tidewater lot all year.
But the place he made offensive Lee coaches set up your second goal driving that and find those on the most incredible place at a really nice weekend for you on the offensive side despite probably being close to that defensive player in the league.
Yes, >> SAS like all of our women.
We continue to ask different things from them and lists.
S that list seems to be getting longer and longer.
And you know, she really is response to credit to her about really wanting to help this team in any way she can this.
What we might get out today.
This really need it.
And she does.
It's South Wesley and for her team.
And so that play down.
The N line was a tight rope.
I mean, talk about great skill, great balance be able to just off of the defender and then put a ball that her teammate can handle.
>> To bury him in that division.
First class and everything.
And part of that play really good combinations in all 3 of your goal scored on 5.
Let's talk about credit again because the 10th straight game with a goal coach.
He just continues to be impressive off the bench.
>> Yeah, in great.
We continue to talk about her and she does what she does and her teammates know what she's capable of her teammates know where to get her the ball she's working our way into new positions in new pockets, too find different ways of scoring instead of just white spaces space in behind narrow spaces.
So we're just excited that she continues to look for the net.
When the opportunity presents itself, but also keep the ball.
You know, she's making very good decisions on the ball, whether it's in the net or keeping possession with their teammates.
>> Another really stellar goal at the end just to put the exclamation point on that when teddy bear with a fantastic crossed and Taylor re just continues to find moments.
She its school record.
At least one point in 7 straight games has 20 points in her freshman season just continue to be the great spots for you.
>> Yeah.
And again, Taylor is another one of those great examples of doing what's being asked of her.
You know, you look at her and her rotations differ each game, but she comes out with a great attitude.
Great energy finds her way.
I think as an example in that particular goal.
That was the first touch that she played coming off the bench and that moment.
So, you know, just you she's got a great energy, great attitude.
And like you said, she's finding fantastic spots to put balls away.
>> Speaking of energy, you go into Sunday's matches.
We turn our attention of the draw with their state.
You knew Farrah think about a ton of energy, ton of sense of urgency just knowing what's at stake for them on the regional rankings and they're trying to push himself to that to spot had to go your team handle that aggression that you're going to get from Thursday at their home field.
>> Yeah, I mean, we knew it was going to be a really high level.
High intensity match that are women put themselves in good tactical awareness to make sure that we could minimize that early rush to and think, you know, if you look at the first 10 minutes, there's a definite on the front foot, but we were trying to hold the ball and the more we can hold the ball, the more we can move it around.
That will allow us to ultimately get into what we were comfortable at.
And I think we ended up holding the ball a little bit more that as he got the one goal mid half on a counterattack.
But I thought our our ladies played well and understood what we were trying to do despite a high intensity, high pace match.
>> Then for the second time this year you find yourself 5 minutes away from the defeat to fare state and all the sudden a big time.
Play again.
It's that's time.
Watch with an incredible finish in front of that.
>> Yes, has found a great pockets.
We had pushed our midfielders.
We're asking them to shift a little bit into some newer spaces.
And in got a great long ball and a couple brilliant pieces of technical ability from the settle to the shield to the finish.
You don't set out to put together a great ball which we needed because we had a couple that were just short of the Kennedy hit the crossbar.
We're just wide on a couple.
So it was nice to see one find the back of the net when we had kind of been knocking on the door for a little while.
>> So now you turn your attention to the post season.
It starts tomorrow with Parkside at 02:30PM.
What's the message that he now, as you flip from regular season out a word I posted.
>> Well, I think the regular season.
Ali's poses great learning moments and shows you lots of different pictures if you play the right regular season.
If you compete in and try and learn in different ways within our team.
It naturally set you up for the postseason.
So we're excited for the postseason.
We feel like we've seen a lot of different looks come at us so far this year.
We put ourselves in different looks.
And so between what opponents have done to us and what we've asked internally of ourselves.
We feel like we're ready for the postseason.
We continue playing the way we need to play.
>> Well, it all starts tomorrow.
Coach best of luck against Parkside.
Thanks as always for your time.
Thank you.
We're back with more of the Grand Valley State sports for continues on WDTN.
[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> While exhibition basketball means little to the end result of the season.
It's a chance to figure out what works and what doesn't on the court before playing in games.
That count towards a record this week.
Both the men's and women's basketball teams took on the biggest schools in the state as they prepare for the 2122 season.
The GSU men's basketball team travel to Michigan State on Thursday night taking on the Spartans at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
The game would end in favor of the Spartans.
But dvs, you did show a lot of by the 83 to 60 loss.
Taliban led the Lakers on the night with 16 points told by Jordan Harris with 10 points.
The Laker men will travel to Indianapolis this weekend to open their regular season against the windy on Sunday.
If you get you women's basketball team took on number 11 Michigan in their exhibition game on Thursday.
November 4th for the final score of 80 to 57 Wolverines at 4 of their first 5 threes.
Take an early lead 22 to 9 in the 1st quarter Lakers would come back to score 17 points in the 2nd quarter after a competitive 2nd half the Lakers scored 31 points in quarter's 3 in for the Lakers shot.

On Friday.
November 12 against Missouri St. Louis.
[MUSIC] >> The GSU men's basketball team returns to regular season action this Sunday and the Lakers have their sights set on a big season in Allendale Tom Cleary has the story than.
>> And their time.
The wall in just a few days.
The regular season will be in for Rick Wesley's basketball team, which looks to be one of the deepest was the veteran coach has assembled in his nearly 2 decades on the job.
In addition to 5 returning starters.
The Lakers had a top transfer from ugly act rival another from the basketball Ridge ACC.
It's a freshman guard to could impact their team in a big way in their first college seasons.
I just think we've had some bodies so far, returning guys and got some good experience last year are now or season.
And so I just think it will give us the opportunity over the course.
But now long budget and season to kind of have guys step up and make key plays at key times, which road which really New York course long years, the veteran trio, Wesley has upfront include center Christian Negron when shooter heitzig Aspen and the versatile Jacob into Bergen from Holland West Ottawa.
First team all glee actor joins a year ago.
>> We got a bunch of guys that can play when you come into practice, you can take any reps off lives.
Those guys are going to beat you on that.
I think that's obviously a good thing for our team.
I think playing those back to back nights last year not be as deep saw like a lot of our numbers will drop off in the second game.
So I think have that extra day between and being an even deeper into this was going to one.
>> While the 2 were guns all around play and that runs inside power are often an eye-catching.
Perhaps the most important lawyer earlier this season will be gastman and the only consistent outside and 3 point shooting threat from a year ago.
We definitely have more depth with the 3 point shooting him to help make some practice here.
We'll push each other.
And, you know, want to see the best shooters every day.
And with gas means outside prowess commanding attention from opponents that should open operating space for Jordan.
Harrison de Leon Brown, both of whom played well in their first seasons at Grand Valley as well as you came in Lewis top performer and northwood.
Where's the blue and white of Grand Valley for the first time after transfer Katie Lewis who transfer North came in last year had set out and now we thought this was going to be his year.
But we have your backs and now we have both of which is really a nice problem to have.
>> The guards me every day getting inside every single day.
I love that will roll may is you just push every day in our great.
We're honestly like that's exactly what I needed.
Also on hand this year.
>> Others are transfers Maximus farthing from North Carolina State and we love her from Western Michigan along with freshman guard trayvon Gunter and with 6, 7, even held during in 6.11 Marius Brazil us.
It's slated to see plenty of action again up front while the Lakers playing rotation would go.
It doesn't deep this year in its quest to bring Wesley the 4th.
We act title of his tenure in Allendale, the Grand Valley State sports report.
I'm Tom Cleary.
