All this to officially begin the Christmas season in South Carolina.
This is the Sixteenth Annual Governor's Carolighting Ceremony sponsored by the Breakfast Optimist Club of Columbia.
This year's tree is a 40 foot eastern red cedar from Fairfield County.
Actually, chopped from the right of way at the intersection of Highway 34 and Interstate 20.
All the ornaments are handmade.
And as always, show a great deal of ingenuity.
The presiding minister tonight will be Dr.

And I know we all thank the choirs and the musicians for the beautiful music that we've heard here this evening and we will hear.
And also thank President Fred Gassaway and the Breakfast Optimist Club of Columbia for sponsoring this meaningful family event.
This Christmas, there's much trouble and much tragedy in our world.
Russia stands ready to stamp out freedom in Poland.
There's conflict in the Middle East.
Cities are unsafe and millions of people are poor and hungry.
And nuclear war threatens the world.
There's darkness in our personal lives here at home.
Poverty, unemployment.
Frustration.
Loneliness.
In so many ways, we're back where Christmas really started.
In the darkness of the night.
Because of our modern day darkness, we need to receive again the message of Christmas.
Those who know the story of the birth of the Christ child are familiar with the fact when he was born, it was night.
When he was born, it was dark.
The shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks by night.
The wise men were following the star by night.
The prophet Isaiah foretold it.
The people, he said, "who walked in the darkness have seen a great light.
And those who dwell in a land of deep darkness on them has light shine."
We are indeed a state, and a nation on whom light has shined.
And in times of darkness the wise will focus their lives on where the light is in their heritage, and will seek to follow it.
In our heritage as a nation, there is a great light that darkness has never been able to put out.
John Adams, one of the founding fathers of our nation, once said, "I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder as the opening of a grand scheme and design in providence for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the world."
Yes, freedom to learn and to live together has been a grand part of our heritage.
But the message of Christmas is the light shining in the darkness.
A message that hope conquers despair, That love is stronger than hate.
The message of Christmas revealed in "The Babe of Bethlehem," is that love is the most powerful force in all the world.
As we enter this Christmas season, we should realize that it is a time for family reunion, but a time to remember the brokenness of the family of humankind.
Christmas is a time for friends, but a time to remember the lone.
Time for feasting, and a time to remember those who are poor and who are hungry as we feast.
A time for receiving gifts, but yes, a time to give.
Time to remember that it is giving, that we receive.
A time for children and a time to remember the aging.
Yes, Christmas is good news of great joy.
So hope of peace on Earth and goodwill among all persons in all nations.
It's a vision of a new Heaven and a new Earth.
When people will live together in harmony.
And finally, Christmas is a challenge.
A challenge to commit ourselves to peace and to justice, to integrity and to goodness.
Christmas is a time to remember the Prince of Peace.
And to seek ways for nations to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
As the eastern entrance of the Rockefeller Center in New York City says, there is a large fresco there depicting the ceaseless upward climb of humanity.
And it bears this inscription.
"Man's ultimate destiny," it says, "depends not on whether he can learn new lessons or make new discoveries in conquests.
But instead, upon his acceptance of the lesson taught him close upon 2,000 years ago."
This Christmas season will serve us well if we reflect once again upon that lesson and determine to let it, The Christmas lesson, be the light that guides us all.
Merry Christmas!
