This is the 2025 GHSA Cheerleading Championships, which means that school squads from across the state have spent months perfecting their performances, competing at regionals and sectionals, all culminating here at the Macon Coliseum.

(upbeat music) I'm Ashlyn Supper and joining me is coach, judge and longtime cheerleader herself, Simone Smith.

Simone, what's something that stands out to you about this year's competition?

- We have so much talent here in the state of Georgia.

We've added more difficult skills and all these teams have stepped up to the plate for that challenge and just excited to see it.

- And you're not only a judge, you're also the GHSA judges liaison for the state of Georgia.

Can you tell us a little bit about what that means?

- Sure, so I train about 150 judges on the scoring system as well as I interact with about 180 competitive cheer coaches throughout the season.

- Whoa!

Well, with that in mind, have there been any updates to the scoring and review process this season?

- Yes, so in addition to the rubric, we also are very excited this year to have video replay for our safety sheet.

So we'll be able to go back and review to make sure that we are getting things right for these teams.

- Amazing.

And now let's talk about what we'll see on the floor today.

In our first session, 2A and 4A, what can fans expect in terms of routine, style and stunts?

- Sure, these teams are gonna come out with great energy, hitting their stunts hard, high jumps, and finishing out probably with a really, really great dance.

- I can't wait.

This is a two-day competition, which means that there will be some wardrobe changes throughout our show.

Simone, I've heard that you are known for going all out in terms of your judging uniform.

Can you tell us?

- Sure, so judges do have a standard uniform of all black or a combination of black and white.

And so I will change each session into a different combination of black and white throughout the competition.

- I love that.

That's the kind of dedication you could only expect from a forever cheerleader at heart.

Now let's get this competition started with a look at the top finishers from 2A.

(cheerleaders cheering) One thing I have to say about your performance, I was watching the whole thing and I have to say you were all very well-rounded athletes.

It felt like no one was just a tumblr, no one was just a stunter.

It was like everyone did everything and everyone did it so, so well.

How does this win feel for you guys?

- [Members] Amazing.

- Take it away, our coach.

- It was really, really good.

- [Ashlyn] What does it mean and what's next?

- Well, we gotta start preparing for next year.

After we celebrate this one.

This was our second consecutive win.

It's the ninth State Championship for our program.

I mean this is awesome.

We have a great feeder program.

These girls are in tumbling and gymnastics and cheerleading as soon as they can walk and it just builds and we build on it.

- The only way we could have mastered this one is with the grace and the mercy of God.

I just wanna give Him all the praise and all the glory for this win.

- Well said.

(cheerleaders cheering) Just half a point behind Pierce County was KIPP Atlanta.

Their routine went overtime and for that they encountered a five point deduction from the judges.

Following them was Coahulla Creek with 89.5, Sonoraville with 87.5, Stevens County with 87 points.

And finally Rockmart with 78.5.

Okay, I am blown away by the height these girls are getting in this arena right now.

A quick question, Simone.

I noticed that some of these scores go over 100 points.

Can you remind me what a top score would be for these competitors?

- Sure, the top score for all-girl is 108 and for coed, it's 113.

So I know it does go over a hundred, but that's just because we have to show they have so many skills, we gotta kind of spread that out to make that so we do have to go over a hundred with the point score.

- That makes a lot more sense.

So what class is up next?

- Next up we have our 4A division and just get ready for more exciting cheerleading.

- Let's see how they do.

Once again, the Royal Purple has brought us all the way to the top.

Royal Purple and Royal Queens of 4A, it seems.

- [Members] Yes.

- How did it feel when you first received this choreography?

I just noticed there's so many amazing, unique formations.

What were your thoughts?

- So our thoughts were definitely, we were going into it with an open mindset.

Cartersville, their athleticism is something that we really look at and our baseball team is really good.

They actually almost made it to state last year, did make it to state last year.

And so we just wanted to bring that and show them that we appreciate them just as much as they appreciate us because we did win state, too.

And yeah.

- That's right.

Champions all around.

So your theme was "Play Ball" this year?

- [Members] Yes.

- And that you did.

Congratulations, you guys!

- [Team] Thank you.

(cheering) (upbeat music) - Cartersville defended their title with a home run score of 104.5.

Central Carroll came in second with 98.5.

Cambridge took home third with 96 points.

Union Grove had a very impressive routine that scored 95.5 points.

And neck and neck for fifth and sixth place were Harris County and North Oconee.

These athletes don't just bring the pep, they bring precision, power and plenty of wow factor.

I'm here with Simone Smith, our very own cheerleading expert.

How are you feeling about the 2025 Champion so far?

- Oh, it's been great.

Lot of energy.

We got to see back-to-back championships in our 2A and our 4A division.

- Both categories?

- Yes.

- Crazy.

Now that I think about it, what separates these classifications?

Is it the size of the squad?

- No, actually it's the size of their school.

- Hmm.

- But keep in mind, just because their school size might be large, that doesn't mean that they can't go out and hit a great skill routine.

- That makes sense.

So what you're saying is it's kind of always anyone's game?

- Oh, absolutely.

- Interesting.

Before we tumble into our 1A divisions, let's take a quick break.

Simone, what's up next?

- Next up is our 1A Division One.

This division is divided into two divisions.

We have 1A Division One as well as A Division Two of 1A.

- You've coached so many athletes at this level.

What separates a championship routine from the rest?

- It's gonna come down to execution.

They have to get out there and hit their routine hard, work together and just pull it all together and have fun with it while they're doing it.

- You never know what can happen on the day.

- Oh, absolutely.

- That's right.

So that's what I'll be looking for.

- It honestly feels so amazing.

I couldn't have done it without any of these people around me.

It was so amazing.

- Aw.

And how are you gonna miss this team moving forward now that you're a senior?

- Oh, a lot.

(team laughing) I'm not gonna have my best friends around me.

(crying) - [Ashlyn] Oh, I know.

- Oh.

(crying) - [Ashlyn] Yeah.

- They're literally my family.

- It's a very emotional experience to be a part of a cheer squad, isn't it?

What does it take to to create a winning routine like this?

- Hard work.

Lots of hard work.

Because we spent hours, hours in the gym and just like helping each other, picking out things.

Just trying to get better as a team.

- Well, take it all in.

(team cheering) Gordon Lee shedding tears of joy for their championship score of 94.5.

Former champions at Breman High School came in a close second just two points behind.

Half a point behind Breman, Swainsboro came in third place followed by Armuchee, Model and Bleckley County.

I love seeing the coaches get so into watching their squad perform.

- Absolutely.

You know your kids feed off of your energy as well.

They know when they're doing good, when you're jumping up and screaming and yelling, so I tend to do that if not even more.

- (laughs) Everyone's having a good time.

You gotta hype 'em up.

And now it's on to A Division Two?

- Yes.

And last year, Lake Oconee took the lead in this class with a score of 89 and Screven County came in second with 83.

(team cheering) Coach, what did it take to get to this win?

How was it after regionals this season?

- So we had an amazing season.

We have five wonderful seniors who have just been fabulous leaders for our team.

This week, we really spent time on the little bitty details and perfecting the little things.

And I think that's what made the difference.

We're so blessed and we're so grateful to God to get us to this point.

And it was really just trusting in Him and trusting in each other.

- I just found out that you guys got a 97.5.

How does that feel?

(team cheering) Congratulations!

And I was also noticing during your performance there was a little bit of mat talk going on.

How important is it to this team to have that comradery out there?

Emmy, do you wanna get the mic over here?

Yeah, perfect.

- I feel like you know, we're a small school and the people who try out are usually the people who make the team.

So we kind of become each other's best friends and you know, it's what are we without each other?

And we talked a lot about energy on the floor this year and I feel like without, you know, cheering each other on and stuff, there is none of that energy.

And in order for us to get through it, it's a hard routine.

So in order for us to get through it, we have to cheer each other on and that's how we get to the end so.

- Well that passion really shines through!

Congratulations, you guys.

(team cheering) Such well-spoken seniors from Lake Oconee Academy.

This scorecard was all across the board.

In second place Metter earned 91.5 points.

Schley County ended up with 77.5.

Screven County, just a half a point behind them, in fourth place.

Trion took home 72.5 points.

And Mount Zion, Carroll with 66.5 to round out our top six.

You can literally feel the excitement in the air!

- Oh, that's true.

There's nothing like cheerleading fans.

- That's insane.

What is your secret?

- Hard work and Jesus Christ.

- Absolutely.

I love that.

What does this sport mean to you guys?

- Well, I think most importantly they just have a passion for cheerleading.

And these are like some of the best athletes in our school.

These young ladies work so hard starting in the month of May and it's day in, day out.

And they are so committed.

They're amazing.

We've had so many injuries and we never gave up, never ever gave up.

We just kept on trying, and doing our best every single day.

I'm super proud of them.

- I would just say we're all very blessed with God for all these talents and we love using this opportunity to worship Him with all of our gifts.

And we're just so blessed to be able to glorify God in everything we do and we give all of our awards and achievements to God 'cause He's blessed us and we're just so happy that we've been able to win another year.

Paran's score was a 92.

Runner up, Savannah Christian earned 90.5 points.

In third place, North Cobb Christian.

And 10 points behind our champions, Hebron Christian with an 82.

It's fascinating to see the different themes as we go through the day.

I think we've heard some Michael Jackson, we've seen cheerleaders driving race cars and playing baseball.

There's so much creativity in each of these routines.

- Absolutely.

There's so many things that make this sport exciting to watch.

From the themes, the music and just putting it all together.

- I couldn't agree more.

But with A Division as hard as 3A, we didn't know what to expect.

We just told the girls to go out there, leave no doubt.

And they did just that and we couldn't be more proud of them.

- That's right.

You came out on top.

And what did you do differently this season that you think led you here?

- I think that our team formed a bond that I've never really had before and we're really a family and I think that's what makes being on this team so easy and so enjoyable.

And I think since we enjoyed this season so much, it was easy to not give up and keep working hard and just wanting to get that win.

- Wow.

West Lawrence held their own with 100.5 points.

Mary Persons came in fourth once again with a 96, followed by Whitewater and Troup County.

This next class has quite the defending champion.

Macintosh High School is looking to make double digits in title wins this year.

And I have to say I've seen their scores for regionals.

106.5, Simone?

How difficult is that gonna be to beat?

- That's gonna be very difficult.

The top score is 108, so 106.5 is near perfect.

- Wow.

Let's see if they can do it.

- The feeling is so great to be able to have something to look forward to and to have a reason to push and to just bring each other up and have a community around us and people who care for us.

- [Ashlyn] How important is it to have this win with this team?

- It means so much to me to like be with everyone and have fun and being a family outside and in cheer and yeah.

Houston County came in second with 103.

Creekview not far behind with 102.

Sequoia took fourth with 99 points.

Northgate 97 and Milton came in sixth with 96.5.

Wow, I am so glad I'm not a judge right now.

That has got to be the hardest part of the job.

- Absolutely.

These girls work so hard, dedicated, give it their all to put out on these routines.

And us as judges, it really does make our job really hard to judge 'em with all that experience they have.

- I just wish everyone could win.

I'm so thrilled to be right here with you experiencing it all.

- [Team] Yes!

- And not just for the school, is it for the whole area?

- Whole county!

- I mean, that's a big deal, you guys.

What do you think separated your team from the rest today?

- I think our love together, like our coaches, our team, we have so much love for each other.

We go on that mat and we do it for each other.

We don't do it because of cheerleading and because we wanna win.

We do it because we love each other.

We love this sport.

We do it for the God, for our God, for our Lord.

We go out there and we have fun.

And at the end of the day, that's all we can do.

And we're so grateful that the judges could see that in us and that we could go out there and do amazing.

And obviously it paid off 'cause we're so amazing!

(team cheering) - With a tie near perfect score for first place, North Paulding and Buford came out on top.

Hillgrove to follow in third with 103.5.

North Forsyth took home fourth place with 102 points.

Mill Creek and Carrollton also tied in points for fifth and sixth place to round out our 6A top teams.

Congrats to those 6A champions.

I love seeing the hard work of all of these athletes pay off.

Now Simone, what is it that makes the co-ed division so thrilling to watch?

- So with co-ed, they have to perform what we call a co-ed stunt.

And when they do that co-ed stunt, that makes their scoring five points higher than the all-girls score sheet.

And so the all-girls score sheet is 108.

- So that would be 113.

- Yep, exactly.

- Awesome.

What is a co-ed stunt?

I know that there would be male and female components, but what does that usually look like?

Is it one?

- It's one guy that has to go underneath the stunt as what we call the main base.

So they are controlling the main part of the stunt with that coed stunt.

- Wow, I'm ready to see some muscle and some magic.

Let's see what they've got.

(audience cheering) - I knew this was a winning routine because my cameraman turned around after you guys performed and he said, "Whoa, that was really good."

(team laughing) That's how you know!

Coach, how difficult was this routine?

- This routine was really difficult, but no matter what, every week our goal is we are just going against ourselves.

We don't care about outside factors.

So every week we're just going and finding things.

Every single half point that we could possibly get in this routine.

And they did it.

They came and got better every single week and I'm so proud of them.

- It seems like that hard work really paid off.

You wanna talk a little bit about that?

- I'll happily talk about that.

Both of our coaches have to now get six-seven tattoos somewhere on their bodies.

This kid has to get frosted tips, which was a throw in from one of our teachers who's best friends with our coaches.

And was there anything else?

- That's amazing.

Oh.

- Oh yes, our coach (indistinct) Buckies now.

(team cheering) - Teamwork really does make the dream work.

Not only were these teams cheering on the mat, they were also incredibly supportive of their competitors on the sidelines.

Roswell and Denmark with yet another tied near perfect score.

Shout out to Richmond Hill, Greenbriar, East Coweta and Walton for earning a spot in the co-ed top six this season.

You all showed true resilience and perseverance in the sport of cheerleading.

We saw the stunts, we felt the spirit, and we are almost blinded by all that sparkle.

That's our 2025 GHSA Cheerleading Championships for you.

- Yes, it actually was a eventful season this year with all the energy, so much talent, lots of defended titles, new championships, creative performances.

We had memorable themes, great sportsmanship, and then also tied scores.

- I noticed some of those tied scores.

In those cases, how do you determine a victor?

- We add up their execution scores only, that separates out for the first tiebreaker.

- I see.
