♪ [stomp] [audience applauds and cheers] - Kari Adams: Good evening.
We hope that you are enjoying our program so far.
We are going to move into a piece called "Serpents and Stone."
This is a piece written in Greek, and it's a retelling of the Medusa myth.
And we were so incredibly fortunate to get to work with the incredible composer of this piece over the summer and also to have her join us today, Kara Stacy Bedwell.
We are so grateful to you for this piece, and we're excited to share it with you all tonight.
This is "Serpents and Stone."

♪ [audience applauds and cheers] - The text that you heard at the end of that piece, the "asfalís kai mónos," means "safe and alone."
Safe and alone, I love the way that Kara said it, as we have increasing intensity of the "S" sounds as the snakes form in Medusa's-- on Medusa's hair.
And so, we follow that idea of safe and alone with a setting of the Wendell Berry text "Peace of Wild Things," joined by Sarah Lidholm on the viola.

I'm so grateful for each of you.
Thank you for everything that you have done over the summer, over this weekend, and in between.
To all of the teachers in the audience who helped prepare them, who helped instill in them this love of choral music, I'm so grateful to you, to parents and guardians who raised these incredible humans.
It's so much more important to me that I work with people who are good people, and that's what I've experienced here is just incredible musicianship, but so much more importantly, just genuinely wonderful people, and I'm so grateful to you for sharing them with me.
I'm so thankful to Jaimie, my wonderful coordinator, to all of our section coaches, for the wonderful experience that they've given me and the support that they've provided to each of these singers.
Whenever I go to do an event like this, I'm always unsure who I'm gonna be working closely with for a large portion of rehearsals and for performance.
And I won the lottery when I got to work with Kira Morrissey.
She is an incredible musician and artist and pianist and also collaborator.
Such a collaborative spirit.
I'm so grateful to have gotten to share this experience with you.
[applause] We're gonna close with two pieces back to back.
The first is "In Her Image" by Katerina Gimon, which is a piece about finding yourself and about finding community, and I think really encapsulates for me this experience that I've had with these musicians over the summer and now.
And we'll go straight from that into "Sing Out, My Soul" by Marques Garrett.
We hope you have enjoyed our program and our final two pieces.
Thank you.
