Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWe have another thriller on tap for you tonight here live in the Macon Coliseum.
It's the class four, a girls championship.
Tilt the war Eagles from Marist against the Kell Longhorns.
In a game that is dripping with history, it is dripping with championship pedigree and we are here to bring it to you here courtside.
Larry Smith here with Kelsey Rogers.
You know, here's the two teams that have collectively have won three of the last four state championships in this classification.
You're absolutely right.
There are no stranger to this floor right here.
The coach is the same way.
They've been with these teams for several years.
Kim Hixon for Marist over 20 plus years.
So they know what it takes to be here.
They know what it takes to win this game.
And unlike some of the other games we have seen, we have a superstar in the building with Marist and Kate Harpring.
We'll talk about her more, but you guys are in for a real treat for this game.
Absolutely.
We mentioned Kate Harpring.
She was a gold medalist in last year's Fiba World Cup, played in Chechnya.
She is on the court tonight trying to win a state title in her final game of their high school career.
Yeah, it is again.
All I can say is you're in for a treat for, you know, she is going to be one of our players that we're going to look out for.
I mean, the smallest of awards, the player of the year.
But she just absolutely does it all.
Again.
You talked about winning a gold medal and such a good teammate.
She understands in order for them to win this game she might have to be a deterrent and a distraction.
Not the one actually shooting the ball.
That's right.
She's headed to Chapel Hill after her season.
Meanwhile, on the other side for the Kell Longhorns, the top player in the region six Kennedy Deese.
That's right.
We're seeing a lot of these players of the year come through here.
The only senior on this Kell team averaging eight points, but does so much more that doesn't show up on the stat sheet.
She is the for a region six player of the year.
And then meanwhile, let's look at the coaches as well for Marist.
Of course, you mentioned before, she's a two time state champion.
Kim Hixon.
That's right, 26 years over there at Marist won two titles already, has coached some of the best that have come through there.
Certainly no stranger to this stage.
And then one a month for the coach of Kell Kandra Bailey, who just became a mom ten days ago.
You know, I have to give her her flowers because we as women, we do it all.
Larry, I'm going to take the stage for her.
Just having a kid a week ago coming here, not even coaching in the Elite Eight was in the hospital, but being on the sidelines at the Final Four.
She's here in person.
She's ready to coach these young women to a championship.
Talk to her before the game.
She's excited for this.
She said the little boy is at home.
She left last night going right back home to be a mom again after the game.
Like I said, women give her her flowers.
She is such a story and such a great spirit trying to get her second championship after they won it all back in 2023.
As we take a look now, getting ready.
Good crowd in hand.
Our officials for tonight, Sonia Healy, Brian Fitzgerald and Alfonso Rogers get a good look.
They're at Coach Bailey starting lineups for Marist Katie Elder, MJ Johnson, Izzy Peterson, Kate Harpring and Mo Morrison for Kell.
Asiah Thompson McKenzie Green Lyric Watson and Maliyah Gilbert as well.
Marist wearing their visiting blue uniforms.
Kell the Longhorns.
They are the home team wearing their whites.
Marist coach is already making some adjustments on the tip off here.
That's right.
Kennedy Deese the fifth center, fifth player at center for Kell number 33.
Ready to tip this up.
And we do the Longhorns out the ball first and here we go.
Lyric Watson number five running the show for the Longhorns 25-5 on the season.
In for a ball.
Trying to add to their championship trophy case back home.
Knights Gilbert jumping the corner.
Harpring the rebound.
Trying to go coast to coast looking for somebody.
Johnson now back to Harpring.
Kell playing straight up man to man.
Defense.
That's a quick foul on Kennedy Deese our player to watch.
Don't want to see her get into foul trouble too early.
So careful there.
First foul here in the opening minute.
Harpring inside gets stabbed to go.
First bucket of the game and again Kate Harpring points away from setting to Georgia all time scoring record.
She needs three points to break that mark after that basket jump shot is away and you get a foul here underneath.
That's going to be on Jay Johnson of Marist.
That's right.
And that's two quick threes for Kell in their offensive sets here.
And again being in this arena in this Coliseum it's very different with the depth perception.
So we'll see how long it takes them to heat up.
Inbound to Thompson.
Just to go inside.
Knocked away there by Katie Elder.
Good defense by the war Eagles.
18 seconds on the shot clock.
Looks like this whole mayor's bench has the scout down there.
All thumbs up, thumbs up.
Coleman trying to go inside.
Stolen away by Emily Morrison.
Taken back by Kell.
Gunshot.
No, by Gilbert.
Back up.
No.
Harpring the rebound.
Getting it to Elder.
Back to Harpring.
Dish inside.
Blocked there by Gilbert.
Giving.
Put back by Kate Harpring.
You'll see a lot of give and go with her.
She's going to give it up, but she's constantly moving.
And if her teammates find her in stride, Kell is in trouble.
She's got the first four points of the game and so she has just tied the all time Georgia scoring record.
Next point from Kate Harpring and she becomes the all time leader.
We'll talk more about the woman she's chasing in a moment.
Long three ball off the mark by Thompson.
Elder the rebound.
Harpring on the push.
Nice pass there.
Patience and a time-out.
Barmore yeah great job.
And very quickly a 6-0 lead and a time-out by coach Bailey for Kell.
30-second time-out to stop and pause.
This mayor's team Kim Hixon again her team's winning the state title in 2022-2024.
So this senior class, of which Kate Hartman was a part of, they were sophomores back then when they won the championship.
Yeah, talking with coach from Marist over there, Kate Harpring was the only player on their roster that was a part of that championship and understands what this what this is here on this level.
Mehr is coming in 28-2 on this.
We've talked about the one common denominator, the thread through all these teams that were watching this week here in Macon, they all have jumped out and out of state and played these other teams.
I mean, again, this is a team that hasn't lost in 2026, hasn't lost to a team in Georgia.
There are only two losses to Cookeville, Tennessee back in December and then to a team out of Louisville Assumption High School.
Both of those back before Christmas.
Yeah, I like what Coach Kim Hixon said.
They went to Florida.
They wanted to get beat up on a little bit.
They did with one game and she said, we made our scars, our strengths, and I love that they use that as something for motivation for them throughout the rest of the season.
And she used that a couple times talking.
She did something that clearly it's a mantra and part of what they're all about here is they have the early success of the lead back to live action, with 5.5 to go here in the first quarter.
Kell trying to get some offense going here.
Nice spin move there.
By Green that won't go.
And Mo Morrison is going to be called for that foul.
To bring in Megan Snipes a 56 junior to replace Morris in the 56 sophomores for the first sub of the game here in this class four A championship.
And Snipes coming into this game.
She's going to give you that grit that extra bit of aggressiveness.
She played at St.
Pius under her dad Kyle Snipes for all those years over there.
Softball player as well.
You know how I feel about soccer and softball players.
They're tough as nails.
Lyric Watson shot is blocked.
Harpring triple teamed there at the midcourt line.
Gets the ball away.
Good defense there.
No Elder on the layup attempt.
It won't go.
Here come the Longhorns.
Post up by Lyric Watson and a player controlled foul by Asiah Thompson.
Bang-bang play.
Here it is.
Another look.
I like the call.
Izzy Peterson for Marist really getting in place.
Setting her feet, taking that charge, sacrificing her body.
Things that don't show up on the stat sheet.
Pressed now by Kell.
Marist gets it through.
No problem.
Elder working inside.
Back to Elder that won't go.
Johnson back up.
Rebound.
Kell McKenzie Green.
Six foot junior bringing the ball up.
I love that.
Ball knocked away.
Good defense there by Snipes 20.
Time on the shot clock.
We've got a foul on the drive.
No basket.
Katie Elder going to be called for that foul.
423 on the clock.
Time-out on the floor.
We'll take one as well.
Great contest so far.
We're watching this young lady Kate Harpring about to make Georgia State basketball history.
More on that record next on GPB.
You wouldn't take a call during the big game.
Oh hey what's up man?
You wouldn't be texting while cheering on your team.
Jacket.
And you definitely wouldn't want to watch a video while marching with the band.
So why would you drive a car while distracted?
Driving isn't a game when you lose on the road, it could lead to a crash.
So when you get behind the wheel, put the distractions aside, drive hands free and save lives.
Heads up Georgia.
You've seen what your electric cooperative can do for your home, your workplace, your weekend.
What lights us up is empowering your local community and economy.
Georgia's E-m-c support 15,000 jobs and invest $16 billion in infrastructure annually.
And because we operate at cost, any extra revenue is reinvested into your co-op or return to members investment with impact.
That's the electric cooperative difference.

Welcome back to Macon 6-0 Marist right now for those points being scored by Kate Harpring.
And so she has tied the all time state scoring record sets back in 1997 by Jill Razor at Athens Academy.
She went on to become a two time Division Two All-American at Rollins College, and currently is an ocular oncologist at Emory.
Dr.
Jill Razor Wells, who actually.
When Kate hit the 3,000 mark, the people at Marist tell me she was there for the ceremony to present a ball and celebrate her performance.
Her monster.
Listen, I am a firm believer that records are meant to be broken, and you guys, again, one point away from breaking that record tied right now.
Are you again something special, generational, that doesn't come through the state of Georgia often?
That's a huge accomplishment.
Yeah.
I mean, almost almost 30 years ago now, that's how long this has held on.
And that's pretty cool that Joe was a part of that three point attempt off the mark there.
Rebound to Marist Johnson in the hands now of Harpring.
Fadeaway.
And there it is.
Kayden Harpring.
Georgia's all time leading scorer in girls high school basketball.
The first goal with 3,400 points in her career.
Give her her flowers.
She has put a lot on her shoulders.
Going to be playing at the University of North Carolina next year.
Kudos to her and her teammates.
This wasn't done just by herself, but she certainly deserves all the accolades.
No question about that.
Meanwhile, eight nothing lead Marist in control of this game so far.
Elder in trouble trying to get a cutting.
Johnson and can't quite do that.
Here's that basket to make.
History by Kate Harpring.
Nice little fadeaway.
Sweet shot.
Kate Harpring dad played for Georgia Tech in the NBA.
He's in the audience tonight along with her mom, Amanda.
Grandfather's here.
Little sister at Marist.
They tell me she's better than Kate's.
That's a big shoes to fill.
Council looking for their first basket and throw it away.
They're out of bounds.
Going to Marist.
Great rebound by Lyric Watson there but again not able to capitalize off of their second chance opportunities.
Oh for 11 shooting so far.
Zero for five from the three point line.
Elder can't get that layup to go.
Great look on the pass.
Lyric Watson now coming down quickly.
Longhorns trying to lift the lid off the basket.
And this for a championship.
Watson on the drive.
Nice move.
And pass the defender.
Harpring the rebound.
Quickly back up the court.
Pushing the tempo.
Nice move inside.
And one.
On Lealee.
Gilbert take another look here.
It's not just the move Larry.
That's impressive but her teammates running the floor.
And it's the timing in which she's either going to make the decision to pass it off or make her move, and the defender has to make a decision quickly.
Look at Matt Harpring there in the center, and the family.
It's the little sister.
Little sister.
She sees herself up on the big screen.
Big moment for the Harpring family.
Brother Luke tied in at Georgia Tech.
Just transferred in January to Florida.
Another missed shot.
Yeah, another missed shot there by Asiah Thompson.
Oh for six.
Now for Kell.
And again the three is not working.
You got to find points somewhere else.
At some point you got to get downhill to the basket.
Find a way to go inside.
Maric trying to add to this lead now 11-0 Harpring trying to set up her teammate Katie Elder for three.
Look good coming off Elder with a quick hustle.
To Azalia Shell.
Jump ball.
Imagine that about 20 of those in the class.
A Division two game earlier to start our day.
That's right.
There's another look.
Shell from Marist risky pass with this Kell team that is long and athletic.
You're not going to be able to make many of those passes without it getting intercepted.
Shell up top puts up a dribble.
Kate Harpring on the wing, jumper at short.
Good hustle by both players with the rebound.
Green trying to push, trying to get something going inside the layup and won't go.
But she'll go to the line with a chance to shoot two.
Green again, taking it coast to coast.
There.
Johnson with the foul.
That is her second personal foul.
Let me think that if they can hit these free throws it'll help.
Us psychologically.
Help this offense.
And that one won't go.
McKenzie Green averaging just under eight points and seven rebounds a game for these Kell Longhorns.
7.7 points per game 6.6 rebounds just under a double double.
She averages and she gets Kell on the board with a free throw.
Here we go.
Longhorns on the board here about 90s to go in the first quarter 11:01 the count.
Kayden.
Elder.
McQueen.
Harpring.
Offensive foul on Harpring screen.
Kayden telling her teammate.
Shell waiting for me to get set up.
We can't afford me getting silly fouls like that.
I'll get you to the basket.
Just let me get set on my screen.
That's right.
In this medication they're chance now for Kell in that first basket three ball attempt.
There is no good up high for the rebound.
Back over to Daphne White.
And finally it goes in.
Off the backboard there for White.
White coming in off the bench.
First field goal of the game for Kell 113.
Now to count.
Harpring stop and pop gets that to fall.
Nice shooter's roll.
Harpring already with 11 points in the game.
Trying it again for three.
No Harpring and she's bumped there by Green.
That'll be Green's first personal foul.
Ball out of bounds here.
Green trying to bring some energy to this Kell team right now.
Down double digits here.
Shot clock is off so Marist can hold for the final shot.
Coach Bailey emphasized how defense.
The key for her is defense and winning the boards.
Right now.
Defensively, though, it hasn't worked to stop.
Kate Harpring has not.
Harpring money.
Give me that.
13 points, three ball here at the buzzer at one.
A first 8 minutes for the War from Marist led by their superstar Kate Harpring.
Exclamation point on a record setting first quarter Harpring with 13, Marist with 15 and the big lead at the end of one.

Welcome back to Macon.
If you are just tuning in, you just missed history.
Kate Harpring needed five points to set the Georgia State all time scoring record that was set back in 1997, and she did that scoring six points early on to get it.
She's already at 13 in the first quarter here for Marist.
Yeah, I mean it's been a Kate Harpring show at this point.
And her teammates and I say that because she's the one with the ball in her hands.
But it doesn't go unnoticed that her teammates are helping her to be able to be in the position that she is to score the ball.
And Coach Hixon talked about that when we talked to this is not just she has this on her own.
It's a team effort.
And she's always looking also to get others involved as well.
They're all very well connected.
We see this when you have one star player, the others fall off.
That's not the case with this team.
As we've seen here in the first quarter, second period now underway.
Kell with just the one field goal there in the first 8 minutes.
What can they do differently here.
Trying to change it.
The momentum.
And there we go.
That's it right.
Like stop shooting that three-point shot.
It's not working for you.
You're over eight right now.
Get some momentum earlier shots higher percentage shots.
Try something different here.
The second field goal of the game for Kell.
And they're back within ten.
Different defense.
Also showing their by Green.
Morrison back in the game stats there.
The sophomore.
One more look at Kennedy Deese in that basket alone.
Senior on this team again averaging eight points.
But again does so much more.
Again don't count this team out.
They were one for 16 in the first quarter.
But this game is far from over.
Sticking with another three ball that doesn't go fight for the rebound.
Harpring wins that Green to the floor.
Coach Hixon wanted a foul on that.
Harpring up and that won't go, but she'll go to the line.
Lyric Watson going to be called for that foul.
Her first personal.
Harpring shoots just under 67% from the free-throw line.
Good form on that one as we see Shell come back in the game.
Snipes going out.
Second.
That's her.
She misses one out of two remains.
11 point lead now for Marist.
Gilbert coming down quickly.
Now for the Longhorns.
Green.
Good.
Helpside defense.
Nice job.
Good effort.
But again going inside to your point.
That's it.
High percentage shots right now.
Got him.
Kate Harpring averaging 29.4 points per game.
She just has so many weapons.
Can score from all three levels.
But she loves to get closer to the basket.
You can't push up so high on a three-point shot there by Lyric Watson.
The first for Kell.
They are one for ten from behind the arc.
Finally, get that going and again Kell showing some offense now just three points for the entire first quarter and already seven here in the opening couple of minutes.
Harpring stop and shoot.
No.
Gets it back from Morrison and no reset.
Talked about the connectivity and you can see it right there.
Harpring calling the shots.
Morrison trying to get it back.
Shot clock down to four.
Double teamed in the corner.
Taken away.
Finally get away.
Yes!
Green on the push to Gilbert inside the Deese that one go green up and in and that goes.
And a chance for a three point play.
Great patience.
Both sides letting the defenders fly by them.
Didn't make it.
But Mckenzie Green right there cleaning up the boards.
There you see the replay.
You let go by.
Wasn't quite go in but Green right there helping out.
Foul on Katie Elder.
So all of a sudden, as you mentioned, Kell right back in this game.
But again doing it inside the 13 pointer did fall.
A chance for three point play.
Mckenzie Green trying to finish it off.
She's got five points on the Knights misses that.
Harpring with the rebound.
Stays in 18 12 game at Kell working their way back into this down by 12.
The start of the second quarter.
Peterson Shell leaves it short.
Watson.
The rebound.
Here come the Longhorns.
Thompson for 3-0 in and out.
Watson is there.
Tries to reverse.
That won't go.
Jump ball is going to be Marist ball.
But I love the energy Kell is showing here in the second quarter.
They've really stepped up much more aggressive again seeing the ball go in the basket.
This is the Kell team that I thought we were going to see.
They did not show up in that first quarter.
But again they are so talented that you can't count them out.
Even with the first quarter that they had.
Harpring makes it look easy.
18 points already for Marist.
Watson for three.
I just don't know that they can live and die by that three point line right now.
They're one for 11.
Great block there.
Nice job by Thompson and the Harpring spin and shot attempt.
Gotta go inside and it'll be a player controlled charge.
Absolutely.
Izzy Peterson.
Kim Hixon talked about it.
She is just someone on this team that is always willing to sacrifice her body and do the little things that don't show up on the stat sheet.
Tough play for Kell because they had some momentum going right there.
And Kate Harpring putting on a clinic right now.
18 points for Marist got the eight point lead.
As we take a time out.
I said I never joined.
Never knew I was strong.
I was joining the Navy.
Sounds crazy.
Saying never actually is.

Welcome back here to Macon Coliseum.
Larry Smith Kalshi Rogers on the call and a great GPB team.
So many people here working every single year to bring you these broadcasts.
It is just a labor of love for us.
And we certainly hear from you guys when you reach out on social media or find us here in the arena.
We appreciate all the love we get from all of you guys.
Big moment right now for Marist up 20-12 as we get a look at Kim Hixon again, trying to win her third state championship right now.
3:43 to go in the second quarter.
But you were saying during the time-out, Miss Kell team can score in bunches, but they've got to work inside and not keep taking quick shots from three.
That's right.
They're a scary team because of the depth that they have and the skill level at that depth.
So being down 20-12 right now, you can't feel comfortable right now if you're Marist.
You saw the opening minutes of this quarter, how quickly they scored Harpring working in the backcourt.
The shot clock now at 81 on one on Thompson stop and pop.
That great defense.
Deese the rebound.
Watson on the push for Kell working against Elder goes up.
Oh can't get it to go.
One more back up and Adam's second chance points by Thompson.
And Kell gets back on the board again.
Triple team on Harpring reverse.
She's got 20.
Just so crafty.
So many moves.
Back to an eight point game.
Now for the War Eagles.
Third championship game class for a boys title game coming up after this one.
They're still in that man to man defense.
Another outside shot with nine on the shot clock.
Oh.
Green back up and in for McKenzie Green has just been a beast inside.
She sure has.
You cannot give Kell third chance opportunities.
But to my point, earlier in the earlier game.
Kayden Harpring knows she cannot foul.
She'll give up the two points.
She stayed away from that.
Yeah, yeah.
Smart move.
Veteran player.
That foul is on McKenzie Green her second personal.
So one of the players right now that's energizing.
Kell just picked up her second.
She's got seven points.
She's about to come out of the game.
That's that's tough.
She has been huge for this team.
I think she has to sit out long again.
This is where the coach player trust relationship comes in.
But you're at the end of the second quarter already.
You know if you said or maybe 45 to a minute without this gap getting larger, then it's worth it.
But if not, she needs to be back in the game.
Number 21 Mckenzie Gurndy coming in.
The game in Green's place is Harpring hits both of those free throws.
Thompson, the 15 foot jump shot that rims in and out.
Rebound is off the hands of white.
It'll be War Eagles basketball.
90s until halftime.
Marist has led this game throughout since the start.
Harpring with 20-2 points, averaging 29 a game on the season.
Back door cut.
Nice cut.
Another bucket.
Harpring ten of 14 shooting.
Give props to Katie Elder on that.
Just dropping that dime on that back door.
Cut.
Thompson inside.
No, but the follow up.
Good by.
Deese another second chance opportunity right there for Kell.
That's 11 offensive rebounds.
Ten second call.
Kamauri didn't get the ball over in time.
Shot clock was at 24.
She's printing out the pitch.
I mean the coach.
Hey.
Next play.
Yeah yeah if if that's if that's your one error of the game we'll take that.
Yeah.
One thing's gone wrong for her right.
She's human.
Gives hope to all the younger girls out there playing basketball.
Exactly.
Everybody.
All right.
Kell down by eight here on offense.
Thompson looking to drive and she stops the three ball attempt.
That one's good.
Daphne White puts it in.
Wide open for the outside.
Shot clock is off.
Harpring now.
Gets it across the timeline before the ten second call.
I promise you won't make that mistake again.
That's right.
She is locked.
In.
On a five point lead for the final shot before halftime.
Wow, that is a good pickup by the official.
First second person.
She's been the key defender on Kate Harpring right now.
That's a good pick up by the official though.
Yeah, but for the Longhorns again if you can hold them without points here.
What a great job.
You actually cut the lead with your main offensive threat.
Green sitting on the bench with the two fouls and great defense.
Ball out of bounds.
Point 3 seconds left.
All right.
Trotman going in the game.
Elder coming out.
Inbound.
And that was not going to count.
But what a first half for Marist their star player Kate Harpring 24 of the 26 points.
It has been a show for the War Eagles.
But look out for Kell.
They have come right back and gotten into this game down by 12.
At one point.
Cut it down to five here at halftime.
Much more to come.
Our halftime show is up next with Jon Nelson here on GPB.

Your home.
Welcome in to our GPB halftime show.
Your home for the 2026 GHSA boys and girls high school basketball state championship coverage.
I'm Nicki Noto Palmer, if you're just joining us, we're currently at the half of our third game of the day.
Right now we're watching the for a girls matchup between Marist and Kell.
And as you can see right now, the War Eagles are up by five over the Longhorns 26-21 Kate Harpring.
Well, she has scored 24 of the 26 points for the War Eagles, and she is officially the all time girl's scoring leader.
So that's been a fun half for you.
John is live from the Macon Coliseum.
Nelly.
We know that Marist and Kell, they're known for more than just basketball.
And I hear you have the esteemed principles from both of those schools with you live and in person.
I do.
It's time to get into partly the principal's office, and then we're going to go into DA's office and find out what else is going on with athletics.
Derek was director of athletics at the school.
Dr.
Peter Giles, the principal at Kell.
Let me go over here, Dua.
You do whatever you like.
It's your show, Jon.
It's your world.
Jon.
We're just living in it.
Not quite.
All right, Doc, what has it been like on campus getting to this particular moment?
Because you've got a new mom who's doubling as a coach, coaching in a championship game.
I mean, that says a lot about your community.
Oh, it's amazing.
The student body, all the staff is coming together.
For Candra Coach Bailey.
Obviously everybody's excited that she's a mom.
And we were all sitting on pins and needles of, okay, when's this baby coming?
And you know, it came a little bit earlier than we expected.
She's had a little bit of stress.
Fortunately, we have an incredible superintendent who allowed for her to be able to be here to support the school in the district today.
And that was pretty awesome.
And we're thankful for him.
So what else is going on at Kell folks need to know about these days?
Well, we got a big community school.
You know, that's one of the things I love about Kell.
We just had a huge career fair where we had about 150 different careers and some colleges there for all the students to find out about athletically, this is our fourth final for this year that we've had.
So pretty proud of that academically.
Great things are going good.
Good CC RPI this coming fall.
When it came out 90.3, that is the most improved high school in Cobb County over the last six years.
So we're pretty proud of our staff for that.
And 87% almost of our students who take an AP class, come out with a college credit.
So pretty excited about that.
And of course, our fine arts are amazing.
I think we had two major band competition championships this year, and they're pretty impressive on that.
No doubt about it.
All right, let's go to the flip side and catch up with Derek, a great friend of us here at GPB, the director of athletics.
We mentioned athletes all the time.
We get to talk about athletes when we get to visit with you.
Obviously, a lot of focus is on Kate.
What has it been like to see her grow into the student athlete that she is?
Well, it's funny because I used to play one on one with her dad way back in the in the mid 90s.
And obviously he was a great, great player.
She's a great player, probably maybe one of the best in the top three that George has ever seen.
I know she probably broke the scoring record tonight.
She did.
So just a great player.
A great kid too.
Very humble.
Just a good person all around.
And the other girls on the team, I think are a little nervous offensively tonight, but you can see their effort on defense.
And so obviously Katie's a generational player.
But this has been a true team effort.
Katie Elder is looking to become the first Marist student in history to win a volleyball and basketball title in the same year.
So they just have a great group.
They're super well coached and couldn't be more proud of them.
And it's great to see you here.
Great to see everybody here for Marist.
Great to see everybody here from Kell.
Derek Waugh, the director of athletics from the Marist school doctor Peter Giles, principal.
So I was in the principal's office for half of the shift here this time.
Nikk let's send it back to you in Midtown.
What else is going on?
Wow.
I just have to say I am in awe of Coach Bailey.
I mean, kudos to being on the court for the state title game as a new mama.
She is just she's doing the thing that is really cool to watch her out there.
John, thanks so much.
No doubt.
No doubt about it.
All right.
Well, coming up after the break, we're going to have more scores, schedules, get you caught up with what you missed.
Get ready for what's to come.
We'll have more on our halftime show right here on GPB.
Keep it right here.
We'll be right back.
With boots on the ground and suspended mid-air, our line workers are everywhere.

Welcome back into our GPB halftime show.
GPB is your place for the 2026 GHSA boys and girls high school Basketball State Championships.
I'm Nicki Noto Palmer and we are so grateful to be bringing you the state championships.
We were here yesterday.
We're here through Saturday now.
We've been able to watch some incredible basketball all season long.
But there are some other student athletes and other sports that we would like to highlight as well.
So thanks to our friends over at USA pharmacy, we would love to highlight Trey Luke.
He's a baseball player out of Rockmart High School, where he's hitting it out of the park in more ways than one.
Take a look.
They weren't twins, but like they grew up almost like they were.
There was a boating accident and he was on the raft.
He fell off and she didn't.
Dunn day go by.
They don't.
Think about her.
I think he went 13-0 you know, hit lead off.
Pitch shut out in the semifinals.
Pitched a shutout in the state championship.
The final out is made and he's looking up in the sky.
Everybody just knows when they see that picture.
They know what he's doing and what he's playing for.
A great story from Luke.
Well, there you have it.
This is our scoreboard right now at the half for our for a girls game.
Marist beating Kell 26-21 We have to take a quick break.
But when we come back, there are 16 more minutes of basketball.
And Larry and Kelsey, they're on the call.
Keep it right here on GPB.
We've got more basketball coming up the second half of the four a girls is coming up next.

Wherever you go, there we are.
Here's our story by the numbers.
Georgia's 41 not for profit member owned Dmcs deliver electricity to 5 million Georgians.
Our network of electric lines traverses 73% of Georgia's land area, with operations in 157 of 159 Georgia counties.
We meet our members right where they live, work and learn.
Strength in numbers to be where you need us.
Georgia's EMC is so much more than electricity.
Breda Pest Management works to protect your home from termites with a liquid barrier.
Breda.
They handle bugs and critters.
Back here live at halftime.
About to start the second half here.
This class four A championship.
26.
21 here at the break.
Marist up by five.
But really it has been to Kate Harpring show.
As we back here courtside, Larry Smith and Kelsey Rogers we were talking before.
If you're Kell you're not happy, you're down, but you're not out of this game.
And even though things did not go well for you in the first 8 minutes.
Yeah, you're not wrong.
It has been the Kate Harpring show.
She scored 24 of the 26 points that they have right now.
Again, I always want to give credit to her teammates because they allow her to get to the places that she wants to get to.
But you're right.
If you're Kell, you didn't have a very good showing the first quarter and certainly not the second quarter as well.
And so to be down by five points right now, you got to feel pretty good about that.
Take a look right now in terms of some of the stats at nine of 34 shooting.
But again they did a very a much better job in the second quarter shooting.
There was no question about that.
44% after just one of 16 from the field in the first quarter, they came back and they'll get the ball first here as we start the third quarter.
Kell trying to win their second state championship.
Marist going for their third as we're underway now here in the third quarter on GPB.
Watson.
Going and a foul there on Morrison.
And again like you talked about there in the first half.
PBS.
What Coach Bailey talked about there at halftime.
Trying to go inside force the action, pick up some fouls and get to the free throw line, stop the clock and continue to to cut away at this lead.
That was 12 points.
At one point for Marist.
Yeah, that's what was working for them.
The little bit of things that were working is almost a rebound, put backs and getting downhill to the basket.
Here at Lyric Watson, averaging almost ten points per game, three steals a game three assists a game five rebounds.
Second one too short.
So one of two goals within four.
DJ Johnson almost all MREs offense has come from Harpring.
Who else can score for them tonight?
Harper on the drive.
Coach Bailey talked about that too, that she knew Kate Harpring she said she's going to get hers.
We've got to contain everybody else.
They've done that so far.
Harpring rejected by Deese.
Foul is going to be called.
Kaitlyn Perry Coach Bailey.
Trying to ask the official how.
Here's another look at the replay.
A lot of ball from where we sit.
Yeah.
The players, coaches pleading the case.
It's not going to change.
John Robinson line for two shots.
Can not leave those points out there if you're Marist.
This has been too close so far.
If you're Marist, you got to think you know the other team not shooting very well and you really are only up by four.
Harpring misses both free throws.
Deese the rebound.
Kell looking to cut further into this deficit.
Gilbert inside for Green back in the game after having two fouls in the first half, and it's a two point game.
Green now with nine points and that is what has worked in this game to give Kell some momentum.
Marist with a change taking the ball out of Harper's hands to bring it down the court.
Now she sets the offense.
Lyric Watson is going to give her shot at Kate Harpring guarding her.
Now.
Harpring with a nice move that won't go.
Great defense by Deese the Region Player of the year.
Coast to coast for Deese up and she gets called for the blocking foul and she'll get two shots.
Izzy Peterson trying to take that charge again.
Falls a little bit too early in my opinion.
I think that's a great call by the official.
At that last basket.
By Green.
Time out.
Marist Kim Hixon doesn't like what she sees.
Just over 90s into the second half, we step aside as well here on GPB class four A championship on the line.
Marist that big lead we saw earlier cut down to only two free throws and a chance to tie next.
No matter the season, Breda works to protect the inside and outside of your home.

That's the electric cooperative difference.
Georgia's emcs so much more than electricity.
Right back here live at the Macon Coliseum, Georgia High School Championships.
Good.
Look at the Marist huddle.
Coach Kim Hixon talking and star player Kate Harpring.
By the way, she got a rebound a moment ago.
And so already a double double, 24 points and ten boards in this game in the third quarter just underway.
But again Coach Bailey's point of how the keys to her game they're going to let Kate get hers.
But she is.
But stopping everybody else with right now somebody from Marist team has got to step up offensively.
And I think that was the point driven home by Kim in that last time-out.
Attempt miss Chance for another Kell 11 game win streak coming into tonight.
Gets the second.
Deese now with five points on the night for Kell.
It's a one point game 153 at the end of one.
Marist on top.
And that is going to be the third foul for Green.
And that is a tough foul because we are early now.
In the third period.
She got her second late in the second, but now her third early in the third.
And she is the one that's making Kell go right now.
Yeah.
And she knew it too.
As soon as she stepped into the path.
You got to be more disciplined to know that you're valuable.
Again, I say it every game.
There are certain players that are more valuable on the floor than getting that extra steal.
Yeah, absolutely.
Green is off the court, off the court.
An offensive foul the other way.
Leading screen on Morrison number 23.
32 Megan Snipes 32.
Okay.
You know teammates are working hard to get Kate Harpring over.
They've got to stay steady, stay firm.
Watson wide open for the three ball that goes and Kell takes their first lead of the game 28 26.
Watson two for six.
Now from behind the arc.
Harpring triple team fouled on the shot attempt.
Should get two free throws.
Look at that three-point shot there.
Great shot.
Yeah absolutely.
On the other end here though that last foul was on Asiah Thompson.
And that should be unofficially her third personal foul.
It is her third personal foul.
So both Thompson and Green with three fouls.
Second shot is good by Kate.
One point lead for Kell.
Control credit Kell for changing things.
Great defensive effort here.
Jump ball possession.
Harris.
Basketball.
MJ Johnson bringing the ball up into the hands of Elder.
Marist changing the way they attack things.
Harpring for three.
That's off the iron.
No Deese in the game.
Kell looking to push.
Gets it to White back to Deese skip pass.
Watson for three off the back.
Iron.
He had Snipes who boxed out but nobody else from Harris went to go get that rebound.
Out of bounds.
It's going to be Marist.
You know they didn't score there.
But I like the effort that they put.
They put forward.
Get the offensive rebound.
Second shot.
But again go inside to your point.
Five minute marker in the third quarter.
Elder in the corner.
That was blocked.
Deflected by Thompson.
She gets it back puts over the center line.
They're going to call a foul.
That's on Katie Elder.
Second personal.
At the table ready to sub back in.
That is a risky.
Yeah.
Interesting move by Coach Bailey.
He just missed this.
And just joining us top of the show coach Kandra Bailey already a state championship back in 2023.
And as of ten days ago a new mom.
And days ago I need to get home to her baby boy after this baby with the title in pocket as well.
Watson with the drive ball is off her leg as she wants it on the way up.
That's a turnover.
We're going back the other way.
One on one matchup here.
Watson trying to go inside.
Over to Morrison.
That jumper gets to go.
And Marist reclaims the lead.
Watson dangerous from the outside now two for seven.
The only player on this team.
Green tripped up and hit her head.
Foul on Gilbert.
Gilbert with the foul.
Green goes down hard.
Take a look again.
I don't see anything illegal there.
No.
A bunch of players going for a lob pass.
Yep, yep.
She might have hit her head.
She stays in the game again.
Three fouls for green.
Gotta stay out of foul trouble.
Watson working on Harpring.
Kell defense has stepped up here since that first quarter.
Morrison on the drive.
Gets it to go.
That's how you step up right there.
Number 23 Mo Morrison the sophomore on this team.
Turning the corner finishing with contact.
That's a good call.
On the way up.
One more look at it.
Another angle.
Completes the three point play.
Marist back up by four.
Watson for three.
That looks good.
And it's in.
Right now if you're Kell that's your hot hand right there.
And Watson three for eight from behind the arc.
Coach Bailey calls a quick time-out.
REgroups with her players.
Both teams in bonus the rest of this quarter.
Good look right there.
Well they've left her open and that's bad news.
While Kell might not have been knocking down the three-point shot early on in the game, Watson has heated up.
So Marist is going to have to contest when Watson has the ball behind the three point line.
Pass for a championship.
We've got one more coming fast for a boys championship.
Keisha just joining us.
Wilcox County winning the class A division two girls championship.
409-40-8309 over Washington-Wilkes in a rematch of last year's title game.
It was also won by Wilcox County Clinch County 63 43 over Portal and the boys, a Division two.
Dixon Kyiis versus Pace Academy is up next.
Steal by Watson.
Well, she's doing everything right now for this Kell team.
Longhorns down by one.
Green the jumper to give them the lead and it won't go.
Another rebound for Harpring gets it back.
Triple teamed in the backcourt.
Now she's got numbers.
Spin move inside and goes.
Harpring back in the scoring column and she says she.
Stepped out.
Of bounds.
Here's another look.
Kate Harpring spin move.
Nice finish around the basket.
Violation of last status being out of bounds for the Kell player.
Coming in and touching the ball.
Turnover is tipped.
Nice defense.
Thompson taking all the way down.
Gets it in nice finger roll.
Thompson now with four points.
Helping up the intensity here.
And Marist match inside for Morrison.
Great ball movement there.
Great vision.
The assist by Megan Snipes.
How about the sophomore coming alive for Marist right now.
She's got to be careful.
Lost the ball jump ball.
Look at these last two buckets.
Good.
Intercepted pass right there by Thompson with the finish.
Nice blow by and then watch the ball movement here.
Great vision by Snipes sees the cutter underneath.
Nice.
Absolutely good ball movement there by Marist.
Watson has been hot.
Morrison got the ball out of bounds.
Trying to get over to the side there too.
Thompson.
Kell struggling from three early on.
Watson now three of eight from outside the arc.
Thompson going for three.
Watson brings down the rebound.
Another offensive board for the Longhorns.
Watson trying to get it inside to Thompson.
Good defense by Marist.
Coach Bailey trying to motivate her players right now a couple missed opportunities.
Deese that won't go great hustle on the rebound by Gilbert.
And a foul on Peterson.
Peterson took the brunt of that on the back side.
27 rebounds for Kell.
Coach said that they wanted to win the numbers on the board.
They are 27 for Kell, 21 for Marist and a nice free throw there by Gilbert.
Amazing stat if you watch this game here.
Getting closer to the end of the third quarter up Marist has yet to hit a three pointer zero for three from outside the arc.
Boom!
She's money Gilbert hitting both free throws.
And Kell back within one point.
Johnson back to Harpring.
Inside the Snipes Qatar wasn't there three ball attempt.
There it is.
One.
Shell puts it in and Marist first tray of the night back to her four point lead.
Trying to answer no.
Great hustle.
Rebound though.
Harpring takes it away.
Watson.
Harpring draws the foul.
Watson with her third personal foul.
Credit by the way one more look at it.
Azalia from the outside.
She heard you talking bad about them from the three point line.
She said let me tell Mr.
Larry Smith something.
When we got.
Right on cue.
These free throws.
Yeah.
Five for ten for Kate Harpring.
I hate to say this is going to be the crux of what you look back at and say.
Yeah.
Were those the five points that we needed to win this championship.
But it's going to come down by the thinnest margin for this game.
Yep, yep.
You can see right now four point game.
And you talked about Fountain scoring.
I give credit to Green for staying in the game with.
Just the three fouls.
Yeah she's done a good job actually.
She came out of the game during that last time out.
So.
Forced turnover right there.
Turnover number 11.
Shell back in the game.
Peterson coming out here for the final.
50s if you're Kell you can't miss the opportunities to at least get a shot attempt up.
They've done so well on the offensive boards, even if they've missed the first one.
They've been right there to get that offensive rebound and put back.
Morrison the jumper that won't go Deese the rebound gets it to Thompson.
Kell driving in.
Ball is off.
Marist it'll stay on this end.
Good downhill drive there by Thompson.
Offense for defense here.
Peterson back in Shell back out.
For Coach Bailey.
Two second differential shot clock and game clock here at the end of the third quarter.
Class four A championship.
Thompson Gilbert looked at a three.
Long three ball.
That's no good.
Tracked down by White.
Another offensive rebound there for Kell.
Deese not able to convert.
Losing the ball.
Good defense after that to prevent another shot come to the end of three quarters here in Macon.
We are going to have a barnburner of a finish.
What an effort by both teams bringing the championship efforts.
40 35 to count Marist on top with one quarter to go and that's next on GPB.

Target date 2028.
All the history here.
Lots of history.
I'm not sure there's too many sad people to see this get moved out of here, though, if we're going to be honest.
That's true.
They have treated us well while we've been here.
But I think it's time for a little change.
Exactly.
Turnover here.
And they give it right back.
Boy.
Another missed opportunity by Kell.
Back to back turnovers.
Open the fourth quarter.
Hill.
Maris still up by five for this title.
Tilt Harpring what a move.
Knowing that green could not foul in that situation.
Harpring goes right at her coach Kim Hixon during that last time out, she wants to make sure they stay aggressive but have a plan and nice job there.
By Deese now with seven points, a high percentage shot again that's what's working.
Harpring calling the shots.
Working on Watson inside for a shot and shell gets that to go.
Azalia Shell with the basket off the bench for the war.
Eagles.
Zone defense now.
Eagles trying to get it inside for Green.
Nice skip pass there for White.
Daphne White the basket.
Great high low.
Once you get that ball that deep you're in trouble.
See what the coaching needs.
The chess match.
Love to see this.
Two championship coaches Hixon and Bailey.
Both of these coaches are coaching their butts off in game adjustments.
I mean usually you can say one coach is getting outcoached by these two coaches right here are doing a fantastic job managing their roster, their players emotions and those in-game adjustments.
Kate Harpring coming back to life here with a couple of buckets to start the fourth quarter and Marist back up by seven.
Long three point attempt.
It's in.
She stays.
With it.
Oh.
I love the follow through.
Stay in your shot.
Way to beat his own.
Harpring on the cut.
Stat to go.
It does not.
Jump ball.
Emotions.
Extra.
Extra.
Curricular words after the jump ball.
Yep.
It'll be Kell basketball.
Here's that last basket.
Boy that's way outside.
Hixon one of the foul on that jump ball.
A little aggressive.
Lurs going to stay in that 122 zone.
McKenzie Green on the inside though.
Little heat check.
Yeah settling for the three early in the shot clock.
Not a good recipe for Kell.
Harpring trying to add to her 32 point night.
Stopped on the drive.
Lyric Watson.
Her fourth personal foul.
You know, we saw Thompson guarding Kate Harpring to start of this game.
Lyric has done a good job as well and I say good job.
I mean coach knows.
Coach Bailey knows Kate's going to get hers.
It's not a matter of whether she's not.
But containing her the best of your ability.
Morrison Mrs.
Harpring the rebound.
And in 34 for Harpring 13 rebounds.
Back to a six point lead for the war.
Eagles and a foul on Peterson.
That's her third.
Massie Kell trying to go back inside again.
He had hit some three pointers here.
They really struggled early on.
One of 16 shooting from the field in the first quarter.
But they have after that.
That's a that's a good, good Green a little overzealous on that rebound.
Didn't work to get possession early.
Picks up her fourth.
And that is crucial for Kell right now.
She's having to come out of the game.
Under the five minute mark now.
Elder still scoreless in this game.
Harpring rejected by Deese gets it to Gilbert.
Has a trailer Gilbert up and in travel.
Traveling.
Wipe off the basket.
And that brings us to a time-out here in the Macon Coliseum for 41.
Boy, tough break by Gilbert but the right call by the officials.
Six point games.
You take a break here in Macon.
I said I never joined.
Never knew how strong I was joining the Navy.
Sounds crazy.

Class for a championship War Eagles of Marist.
Trying to win their third title this decade.
They won it all in 2022-2024.
But boy, this Kell team, relentless on the boards.
17 offensive rebounds and that that aggressive play has really kept them in this game.
But again, I'd like to see them still keep going inside and hitting three pointers now.
But you can't fall in love with a three.
Way too much time left on the clock.
Yeah five for 23.
And those five were crucial three point shots when they made them.
But again, you can't rely on that at 5-23 Shooting 22% from the three point line.
That's not what's going to win you this game.
You've got to get downhill.
Get to the basket.
And with three out right now that's a little bit more difficult.
Yeah two of 14 in the first half.
So three of nine here in the second half.
Not bad but still.
They made the comeback by going inside and being aggressive.
They got to continue with that.
Now Kennedy Deese is going to take her shot at Kate Harpring guarding her.
Out of the game.
Deese good defense there.
Gets it to Morrison with the shot clock winding down and she hits the jumper.
A broken down play right there and Marist comes out with two.
Still.
Increases their lead to eight.
Gilbert thought about the three.
Thought better of it.
Works inside now to Deese smooth shot and that is not going to go in.
But she gets the foul and she'll go to the free-throw line.
Look at that last basket shot clock.
Here is a two.
Yeah definitely a broken down play.
And the fact that they were able to get points out of that great pickup on the other end though by the official sends Kennedy Deese to the line.
She is one for two currently in this game.
And foul was on Morrison.
By the way, that's her fourth.
She stays in the game.
Peterson comes out.
Shell going back in for the War Eagles.
Green now subbing back in for Kell as well with 349 again.
Coach Bailey can't sit her too long, but she's got to play smart.
She can't come in here and pick up that fifth foul quick.
Yeah, you got a savvy coach on the other side.
I'm sure they will go at her on this other end.
Both free throws ends that lead cut back down to six.
Deese still on Harpring.
The blocked shot wanted a foul.
Nothing doing.
Two on two break here.
Going inside and in.
Thompson with the basket.
It's now.
Thompson way to finish at the basket.
There.
Cut down to 45046.
Thompson going for the steal.
Almost gets it.
Nice hands back into the hands of Harpring double team chasing to the backcourt.
Inside for Shell.
She brings it back out.
Still 10 seconds on the shot clock.
Morrison for the jumper.
Baseline.
Good.
How about that Morris now with 13 points.
In the second half she has had.
Now to White back to Gilbert.
That's how you want the ball with Green inside out game for Kell.
Thompson off the underneath of the iron.
Harpring the rebound tripped by Gilbert.
Morrison in the corner again.
One more time out at the 243 mark.
Listen, don't go anywhere.
Marist up by six but Kell playing determined basketball.
Can they finish the comeback?
We'll find out when we come back after this.

Live here in Macon GHSA class four A championship.
Boy, we were just saying a moment ago the way Kell started this game down early 11-0 in the first quarter 15:03.
After that, it seemed like they couldn't find anything.
But they have hustled and have worked hard to make this a game.
Gotta make some stops here and make some smart plays on the other end.
On offense, Claude is exactly scratched and clawed to fight back to where they're at right now.
Down by six.
Still have made a few adjustments.
Green on the inside being a huge piece of that, but with her foul trouble, they went back to that three point line that they relied on in the first quarter that wasn't working.
A moment ago.
Five of 23 from three.
But again, got to be careful here watching number three in white green.
She has four fouls back in the game playing off the ball.
Ball knocked away from Harpring.
Tied up on the ground.
Jump ball will stay Marist ball.
16 seconds on the shot clock.
Harpring wide open.
Can't get that to go.
Air ball saved.
Inbounds back to Harpring.
Great job by Morrison.
Yeah she has stepped up in a huge way in this game.
The ball didn't hit the rim so the shot clock didn't reset.
Harpring on the drive.
And she's fouled.
Coach for Kell the assistant coach telling him they've got to box out.
She's absolutely right.
The airball by Kate for Morrison to be able to get that and throw it back inbounds.
You can't give up those opportunities if you're Kell right now.
On Kennedy Deese that's her third.
Harpring again earlier tonight, becoming the all time scoring leader in Georgia high school girls basketball.
I think at this point she would have if she could have gotten it.
Dans come out of his jacket.
Hey, I bet you she goes home tonight and shoots about 500 to 1,000 free throws.
That's right.
A little sister.
You talk about work ethic.
That's a kid.
And you know, her dad played in the NBA.
He knows what it takes.
But after their practices, Coach Kim said her dad goes and works her out afterwards.
Yeah, yeah.
Says otherwise.
He let slip the.
Coaching staff do their thing, doesn't get involved with that.
Even though the immense experience that he's had as she hit the second free throw.
So one of two and then Coach Hixon calling a time-out for Marist.
So a seven point lead here, 2:11 to go.
Some conversation continues.
18 straight wins.
For this Marist team haven't lost this calendar year in 2026.
Which is amazing.
Again, both of these teams phenomenal records.
Coach Kandra Bailey talked about played in a fall league against St.
Francis, Marietta, Sandy Creek, scheduled hard out of region and she felt before the season that they could be here and win this game.
There is no give up in that team down to our left.
And you know, we talked about it.
Haven't shot many threes.
Just one of four.
Haven't had to.
They're shooting 52% overall 22 of 42 from the field.
It really worked well inside even though you know Kayla's got so many second chance opportunities with 17 offensive rebounds.
They've gotten the game.
Marist by their leader Kate Harper.
You mentioned before headed to North Carolina, one of the most sought after players in the country.
Last year's Gatorade Player of the year as a junior.
That announcement comes out tomorrow.
She's a leading candidate to win that.
Again.
I'll say her performance tonight with 30-5 points and 15 rebounds.
Certainly, doesn't hurt.
Yeah.
You had another state championship to that.
Her resume looks real nice.
Absolutely.
Mckenzie Gurndy back in the game now for Kell trying to go inside for Deese intercepted by who else?
Morrison.
Ball out of bounds.
Knocked away by the Longhorns.
It'll stay Marist basketball.
Massie.
Gurndy coming back out of the game.
Thompson's in White Watson.
Deese and Green the five for Kell.
And Jay Johnson now across center court.
Back door.
Again trying to find Harpring.
She catches it.
That line brings it back out to reset here with 15 on the clock.
Double team coming.
Off the ball knocked out of bounds by Deese War Eagles basketball.
That trap that Kell is bringing is intense.
You have height.
You have athleticism.
Arms are high making it so hard for Kate Harpring to get out of that.
She's got to get rid of the ball before that trap comes.
10 seconds on the shot clock.
Snipes to inbound for Harpring.
Let it fly, Kate.
Let it fly.
What a move.
And she does soars to the basket.
Let it fly.
And good defense here by Johnson to get back.
Back to Harpring.
Zooming past the defense.
Throws it up and she was fouled there by White.
Harpring with 30-7 points.
A nine point lead with 1 minute left.
Deese wanted to travel on that last basket.
And you can start to feel it.
The emotions Deese right now trying to compose herself.
The only senior on this team.
So this means a little bit more for her.
Again, do not count this Kell Longhorns team out right now.
Both teams still with three time-outs.
So the way they play defense and their ability to score downhill fast does not take them out of this game right now.
Time-out Marist Hegseth wants to talk about it ten point lead with 1 minute mark.
30-second time-out for Marist.
Take a look at the road to the championship for the War Eagles north side woodland.
North Oconee and then Cartersville.
Just a dominant performance in the Final Four to get here.
77 41.
And that's the reason why they schedule out of region so hard.
Not much competition right there to get to this point.
And you want to make sure your team is prepared again.
So Coach Kim Hixon going down to Florida playing in that tournament.
Just as Coach Bailey talked about playing in that tough fall league, trying to get their teams ready for this moment right here.
1 minute away for a big night if they can hold on.
Let's see what Kell has.
Gilbert.
On the drive now to Watson.
Green for three.
Off the mark.
Rebounded by Thompson.
Back up and no.
But a foul.
Deese will go to the line.
Katie Elder gets her fourth foul.
Katie Elder still yet to score in this game.
But I tell you what Larry, she has done so much to ensure that Kate has had the ball.
All those dime drop passes on those back door cuts have been from Katie Elder.
She found a Morrison one time on that same type of play.
So, you know, I want her to hold her head up high because again, she has contributed so much in this game, although she hasn't put up any points.
Absolutely.
Deese hitting one of two.
So 56 47 now full court press.
Here the Marist bench screaming go ball across the center line.
And they did that.
Get in the hands of Harpring.
Lyric Watson going to be called for that foul.
That's her fifth personal foul.
The sophomore on this Kell Longhorns team and.
She played a heck of a game three for nine from outside ten points six rebounds.
She needs to hold her head up high as well because she really kept this Longhorns team in this game.
When Green had to get out because of foul trouble.
She did.
White comes back in the game to replace her as Harpring gets that soft roll to fall 39 points.
The most prolific scorer in Georgia, high school girls basketball history.
And that one goes for 40 points for Kate Harpring.
And Kell has not scored in the last 3 minutes.
That is a huge scoring drought as they were trying to make a run to get back into this game when they were down by six.
Yeah, yeah.
Came back from that early deficit, took the lead here in the second half.
We've watched Marist fight their way back and now take control here.
Got to score quickly under 30s to go.
Gilbert going left.
Too hard off the glass.
Rebound.
Fought for Marist taken back and now it's loose.
Another jump ball should stay here.
It does.
Kell Longhorns.
14.3 seconds left in this game.
Here.
Well, Kell didn't start off like they wanted to.
They certainly played a hard game.
They did.
Thompson the long three and she hits it.
No time out.
Let it roll.
Gilbert with the foul.
Kate Harpring frustrated with that foul.
Lealee Gilbert trips her up instead of just having to take foul.
And that's her fifth.
She's out of the game.
And they begin to celebrate.
Marist crowd as they clear the bench.
Now.
You hear him shouting MVP not from the free-throw line though.
Not saying no.
It's been a tough night.
Crutch not gone well for.
Ten for 18 from the free-throw line.
Number 21 Flynn Keppen coming in the 57 senior for these final seconds missing both.
And there it is.
And a smile from dad.
What a game.
Marist state champions once again 2022 2024-20 265850.
Winner of the class four A championship over Kell.
The War Eagles soaring again.
A state champs.
I mean, what a showing by both of these teams.
I mean you couldn't have asked for a better game right here.
Both of these teams in the four a division were absolutely phenomenal.
I know the ball didn't bounce the way Kell wanted to bounce, especially in that first quarter.
They made some adjustments, just not enough.
They lived and died by that three point line.
And at the end of the day, you were six or 25.
You only shot 24% from the three point line.
Yeah, tough.
And you didn't get to the free throw line very much as well.
Only 13 free throw attempts.
And we saw said earlier we've seen the earlier games.
The free-throw shooting can really be a difference in these games.
Better this close.
Yeah.
And when you're not going downhill as much right.
You're not going to get those calls.
So trying to live by that three point line.
The things that were working they didn't go back to, that's where the miss of the in game adjustment was in my opinion.
Marist getting the wins.
They finish out at 29-2 Kell Longhorns what a season.
25-6 11 game winning streak comes to a close.
And again, the record for Kate Harpring now set.
Would it be another 30 years before it's broken?
29 years is how long this one stood.
Joe Razor out of Athens Academy, 1997.
But again, Kayden Harpring finishing her career.
You saw there a moment ago, 3,435 points, 40 points tonight, 15.
Make that 16 rebounds.
She rebounded her own miss in that final free throw.
And now again 2025 Gatorade Player of the year.
We'll see what happens for this year's award.
But she looks forward to graduation.
And then in June heading to Chapel Hill to be a part of the North Carolina basketball program starting next season.
Let's go now to John Nelson as we time now for our coaches interview.
Brought to you by Breda Pace management, the official sponsor of high school basketball, John.
Thank you very much.
Larry Smith.
It is another time to.
Celebrate for our friends from the Marist School and to hand over the hardware.
It is the executive director of the Georgia High School Association, Dr.
Tim Scott, and our friends from Brad Delp Pest Management.
What a great game.
Want to say congratulations to Kell High School.
Give them a big round of applause.
And now, on behalf of the Georgia High School Association, Brad Delp management will present the state championship trophy for 2026 to Marist High School.
So you got to be the first person to kiss that trophy.
You looked at me before the camera came over here and you said that was a hard one.
I will go ahead and ask, how hard was it?
Did you not just see that, Kell is incredible.
They are such a great basketball team.
But this group behind me is resilient.
Our seniors at the standard our culture has been set.
They have a legacy that they have left behind for years to come.
I'm so proud of them.
And my coaches, I couldn't fans were incredible.
Thank you all so much for coming out.
22, 24 and now 26 seems like every even numbered year.
What about this group of seniors in this particular group?
Makes the 26 title special.
They want.
There's no quit in them.
There's absolutely no quit.
And it goes all the way down to our our freshmen.
And just like I said, the culture and the, the standard they set every day, this is we expect excellence every time we step on the floor.
And they said that they're going to be missed tremendously.
The Mary's School champs, we handed over the trophy War Eagles time to celebrate.
We'll catch up with the coach and Kate Harpring in just a little bit.
Let's send it back to Larry and Kell.
Jon Nelson.
Thanks so much.
58 50 Marist the Champions.
And that's the one tough thing about this moment when you have two teams that have worked so hard for the past year to get to this point, but only one can take home the trophy.
Marist certainly deserved that tonight.
They absolutely did.
They came and put a total package of a game together.
A full 40 minutes of that game.
That's what they did.
They executed the game plan, the scouting report.
They made the in game adjustments when needed to.
And they they deserve that victory.
But you got to tip your hat off to Kell and the effort that they showed.
Yeah, they could have just, you know, packed it up and gone home.
Right.
Nothing going well in those first 8 minutes.
Again, one field goal in the first quarter.
But they came back took the lead in the third quarter, made the adjustments.
But just Kayden Harpring was too much on this night.
And what a night for her.
And what a night again for this Marist team you've talked about before how tough it is when you've got a superstar to kind of balance things.
She scored, but this was still a very much a team effort, a lot of good connecting communication, ball movements, scoring overall and they get the championship.
They don't win that game without Emily Morrison.
Yeah, 13 points.
She she absolutely made a difference in this game when they needed others to score around Kate Harpring she stepped up and made that happen.
With those 13 points.
They don't win this game without her.
Absolutely.
They will fly high on their way home out of here.
By the way, we say congratulations again to Kell on a great season.
Coach.
Bailey Coleman M'kiya Manama.
That's right.
Mara's getting the win.
Champions soaring high tonight in Macon.
What a night overall in this class for a championship.
We predicted a clash of Titans and we got exactly that.
Harpring making all kinds of plays.
Kell coming right back and with the good fight, Morrison was there the night they'll remember the War Eagles when they soared with this class for a championship postgame show, is up next here on GPB.

Welcome in to countdown to Tip Off live on GPB.
I'm Nicki Noto Palmer Georgia Public Broadcasting is your home for the 2026 GHSA Boys and girls high school basketball state championship games.
If you're just now joining us, we just crowned the four a girls state champion.
So let's go ahead and take a look at our scoreboard and get you caught up from that game.
Marist War Eagles.
They soared high over the Kell Longhorns winning 58-50 with that final score right there.
Kate Harpring she was putting the exclamation point tonight on her decorated career.
Jon Nelson Kate dropped over 40 points tonight.
I mean, what can you what else can you say about a decorated career with that young lady rocking the number 15 and Coach Hixon?
I mean, they did it in 2022, 2024.
Now 2026.
It wasn't easy though.
Nelly.
No.
It was not.
And before you came to us, they were just talking.
They were they were looking at the stat sheet and.
Kate finished with 40-16 15-25 from the floor, ten of 19 from the free-throw line.
I'm sorry I brought that number up.
But you.
Know.
So and I want to I want to kind of go through this whole thing.
And one of the points that obviously I want to discuss about Kate, specifically, coach, what has it been like for you to see her grow and evolve into the player that she is now as a senior?
I'm so blessed.
It's been incredible.
From ninth grade year to I can't even believe she's a senior.
I mean, it's it's surreal.
It really is.
You saw tonight how she's led us all year on and off the floor just communicating on what she wants and just I mean, she's a generational player.
Like we just I've been so blessed to coach her for four years.
All right.
So generational player karma.
How do you think this senior year has gone for you?
I'm sure that you had personal goals about how you wanted your game to to grow so you can get ready for the next level.
Where do you think you are on that pathway?
Did you fix everything?
Do you still have stuff you think you need to work on to get ready for the next level?
Where are you right now, do you think?
Yeah, I definitely think there's so much stuff to work on.
I mean, I'm still getting better every day.
Every time I step on the floor, I know I have something to get better at.
So definitely, I mean, I have so many more goals for myself coming up in college.
And then also just, I know I have so much to work on to keep being that best player I can be.
So then when you have 19 players from the other team guarding you, knowing that other players are going to have to be a part of this process to help you out, how do you navigate that to where you can bring the other players into this process?
Because there's always that give and take of, okay, do we let Kate get hers and risk everybody else, or do we triple team you quadruple whatever and then have everybody else react?
How is that give and take with you and your teammates?
Yeah, honestly, I'm going out and just playing hard every game.
I mean I'm just going what playing how I usually play.
Just playing and just seeing what the defense gives me.
I mean, like we said, Emily Morrison, she came up and she hit so many clutch shots.
She had an 8-1 Like our players on our team definitely.
Like they just have a spark to them.
And that really helps us to get like wins and stuff.
But I mean, definitely I just come out and play as hard as I can, do whatever I can to help our team win, whether it's scoring, because we had a couple players in foul trouble or I mean, just like trying to be that leader on the court.
All right.
So Kim hang on.
You want to show the trophy once again.
Show that trophy right there.
Hold it up.
Yeah.
I can't touch it.
I didn't earn it.
So that's going back with the two of you.
Back to the Marist school.
Just hang it.
Just hold it right there.
Because that would have been appropriate.
That would have been the best that I've looked all week.
Let's send it back to Nikki in Midtown.
Marist victorious celebrated player right here.
We will not forget what Kate Harpring has done.
Thank you.
Nelly, can you ask Kate what school is going to be like tomorrow?
Does she wear a jersey to school?
Like, what do they do tomorrow on a on a Friday?
Okay, so Nicky's asking back in Atlanta, are you going to wear your jersey to school tomorrow?
Is school in tomorrow?
Are you going to class?
I don't think they need to go to school tomorrow.
Well, I think we are going to go to school tomorrow.
I think we might.
We get some white shirts, maybe.
I think we'll wear those.
We'll probably have a little sleepover or something with our team tonight just to celebrate this amazing win that we've been working so hard for.
So, I mean, probably probably our shirts tomorrow.
So maybe have Derek do laundry.
He should.
He should.
Have the athletic director do the laundry.
So it's a clean uni to go back out there.
At least he can do.
Yeah.
See.
See this, this is this is responsibility that they're giving the athletic director for the Marist school for tomorrow.
So they got clean, they got clean shirts and everything to take with them for a title.
Nikk D Walz going to get you for that Nelly.
You know he is.
Congratulations again to Coach Hixon.
To War Eagles about.
That.
Anything.
Trust us, as long as we have that trophy back in Atlanta.
For sure.
All right.
Well, we've got more coming up for you right here on countdown to Tip off.
We're going to get you ready for our final game of the night.
That's the boys for a game between St.

But we've got a whole lot more coming up right here on GPB.
We'll be right back.

Welcome back in to countdown to tip off the Marist War Eagles just won the girls for a state title.
Now number 15 on their team.
She happens to be the number one point guard in the country.
Her name is Kate Harpring and she happens to be GPB player of the year.
Take a look at Kate now tonight she absolutely went off and helping her team win that game.
She finished her career with over 3,435 points, which sets a GHSA GHSA record tonight, and she is now the all time girl's scoring leader.
She's headed to North Carolina next year.
She dropped over 40 points tonight, grabbed 15 rebounds and was our obvious player of the game tonight.
So again, congrats to Kate for being our GPB player of the year.
Congrats to the War Eagles Jon for bringing home the for a girls State title.
Yeah.
And when you look at the the body of work that she has that she has brought forth, knocking off Joe Razor at the top of the ladder in Athens Academy for points in her career here in the state of Georgia.
And understanding the gravity of her place and understanding the responsibilities that are attached with it, once again bringing other teammates into the discussion.
And so we talked about Mo Morrison going six of nine.
And you know that that Kate Harpring is going to get double teamed and triple teamed each and every time, handling the ball in key moments, making sure that the that her teammates can contribute as well.
Fully rounded player.
Really cool to see just the evolution of Kate Harpring.
And we got to see it tonight and we got her to set a record here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Nikk.
I know, I love that we got to witness that live and in person.
You know, Nelly, what I loved about Coach Hixon also, it's clear that Kate is is coachable, right?
And she brings such humility to the game because right before we went live with both of them, she just wanted to get better, right?
She kind of scoffed at her at her free throws tonight.
Right.
And she was upset about that.
So I love that about her continuing to get better.
Yeah, you mentioned ten of 19 to Kate Harpring.
You mentioned ten of 19.
You know you could just see the brow, just kind of get all furrowed all of a sudden.
So she knows she's got stuff to work on.
And that's the thing all great players are never 100% happy 100% of the time.
And to see Kate Harpring once again, that's why I wanted to ask, you know, about evolution and where she thinks she is, but I'm fairly certain that, you know, if if Kim Hixon has this sheet, then she takes it back and just kind of hangs it right over the locker.
They're going to take ten of 19.
They're going to highlight that.
And you know that Kate's going to be in the gym tomorrow when she's not in class, that everything's going to be fine.
Back to you.
I mean, she might go home and just start shooting some free throws there in her driveway.
I don't doubt that for.
Amen.
All right.
Thanks, Nelly.
Well, coming up, we're going to have the boys for a matchup for you with Matt and Sean.

You wouldn't take a call during the big game.
Oh hey, what's up man?
You wouldn't be texting while cheering on your team.

And you definitely wouldn't want to watch a video while marching with the band.
So why would you drive a car while distracted?
