We were actually in the studio over the summer and hopefully we're gonna have another record out by February or March next year, 2022.
So we're excited about it.
- Great man, well, listen, look like we're about to break free from what we've been tied down to, the pandemic and all of that.
And we got the breakthrough kind of group, you know, you guys are that kind of breakthrough kinda group.

She's 105 years of age and she lives in Coffee Springs as Geneva County.
Guess what?
She's Troy University's oldest alumnus.

She taught elementary and high school for 39 years and she says she contributes reading, and of course reading her word every day, to her long life.
So Ms. Rillie Simmons, all of your 105 years have made a difference on this earth.

And you come from a family of singers, right?

That's where I started on radio.
Me and my sisters, my mom who's managed our group, The Underwood Spirituals, we started singing there on WBIB in Centreville.
Mr. Robert Mayberry.

- He was managing then.
And he used the one that mentored me and got me into radio.
- That is amazing, an amazing family there of singers.
- Yes, yes, we love it.

So what artists do you play?
- Well, I play a variety of music, but my base is quartet.

- 'Cause that's what I sing, I sing quartet.
And I tell you when you're tune in to me, I call myself Lady Neat, Neat Unique, we're gonna have church.

Now you just recently recorded a piece.

I actually recorded an album.
And it was a little while ago, but it was while I was homeschooling and it's a jazz thing and I try to, you know.
- Fuse it all together.

It was a lot of fun.
- Great, now, are you in school now?
- Yeah.
Well, no, I actually just graduated, I just graduated.
- [George] From?
- From Stanford University.
- All right, well take an inhale and exhale, right quick for me.

Let me tell you at a time like this, 'cause our time is moving fast.

- Tell me, what impact are you looking to have as a pastor leading a congregation?
- Brother George, I appreciate you sharing with me that question because when we met for the first time, I believe the first question I ask is, what is the purpose of Alabama Gospel Grassroots?
And you told me it was to bring the people together through the gospel music.
- That's right.
- And I am wholeheartedly aboard that with you and glad to partner with you in that, that we can make a difference in this time in our country, in our city.
And so many people are tuning in and it's such a privilege to be a part and to support Alabama Gospel Roots.
- Well thank you so much.
And you told me you watch every week and I believe you do.
- Yes, yes, yes.
- 'Cause I get texts from you now.
I get a texts.
- Well a little disappointed, okay.
While they were taping this afternoon, we it had some beautiful groups, I mean, talented artists.
And I pulled out my card and I said, you know, if you need someone to fill in for you, give me a call.
- And I said, devil get out of here.
- Yeah.
(George laughing) And so I had no takers.
- But you are praise, you have done praise and worship.
- Oh yes, yes.
I tell you, we can't praise God enough for what he is doing.

- And when we had the opportunity to sing for the glory of God, it does, it changes us.

- Yes, and so just to be able to be a part of singing every day and listening to the old hymns and new songs.

It's an honor and privilege to be on Alabama Gospel Roots, our very first time.

So you guys have been together, how long?
- We haven't been traveling as a group for 18 years now.
- Wow, 18 years.
And I understand you were one of the founders, or the founder.
- One of the original member, nobody can fire me.
(all laughing) - I see three guys back there saying, hey don't believe your own press now.

Well I'll tell you what, real quick introduce everybody, first you can start with yourself, however you want to do it.
- Yeah, singing lead, he's not far from here, Calera, Alabama.

- Yeah, Mr. Chris Walton, he's been with us now for about six years.
- Awesome.
- Colby, he's been with me now for seven years, he's in his seventh year and he's from Cleveland, Tennessee, Colby Goforth.
And then our young man on the very end, he's in his third year with the ministry and he's one of the finest base singers you'll ever hear.
