A new day for older Americans.
A time for living.
Your hostess, Charlotte Simmons.
Charlotte Simmons: Hi.
Welcome to the program for and by the senior citizens of Hawaiʻi.
The fragrant and friendly community of Hilo, recaptures the rich history of Hawaiʻi’s Merrie Monarch, King David Kalākaua, as hula kahiko and hula ʻauana participants gather from all parts of the state for competition in the 16th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival here in Hoʻolulu Tennis Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.
The week’s festivities continue with this evening’s hula kahiko competition event.

Aloha Uncle Henry and thank you for being here tonight.
I understand at this festival you are being the honoree.
How do you feel.
Henry Pa: Well, I must say it is a happy occasion.
I am very grateful to the people, to my people, particularly, this is the land that I was born in.
Charlotte: Right.
It’s your home.
Henry: And when Aunty Dorothy asked me last year; “Henry, would you be my guest next year?” She says, “I want to honor you.” I said, oh, lovely thought.
I said I’ll be happy to be there with you.
Charlotte: Aha Henry: So, I’m really grateful.
I just don’t know how much more to express myself.
But, I am glad that I have been able in the past to transfer some of my knowledge to the younger people, the younger generation.
For those who have observed my work and learned from the heart, have showed me that they really can live a part of Hawaii.
Charlotte: Yes, you’ve done so much for Hawaiʻi.
And we want to get, see more of you and perhaps we can do a show with you when you are feeling better.
Henry: Mahalo a nui.
Mahalo to all.
Charlotte: Have a nice time tonight.
Henry: aloha mai aloha mai.
Charlotte: Thank you.
