This week the 16th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival continues its tribute to hula master Henry Moikehaokahiki Pa with the second half of the hula kahiko competition here at Hoʻolulu Tennis Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.
(chanting in Hawaiian with various hula hālau and individuals dancing) Applause and cheering (8:52) Charlotte Simmons: This is George Naʻope, from which the idea for the Merrie Monarch Festival was conceived.
George, when was the festival conceived?
George Naʻope: Uh, in 1963.
When uh, when I was promoter of activities for the County of Hawaiʻi.
And we kind of needed something in Hawaiʻi to stimulate some business for the economy.
So, we thought of what better person you know, than to honor than Kalākaua.
