- How's it going, Andy?
- Good.
That sounded so good.
- Thanks a lot.
- It's just beautiful.
This is the part where we talk and I hook you up to a lie detector.
Is that okay?
- That's okay.
I'm fine with that.
- All right.
Want to bring that machinery in for us?
That is just a beautiful song.
We asked you to bring a whole bunch of your own songs.
Those first two were yours, obviously.
Tell us about those first numbers.
- Sure.
Actually, the first number I wrote with a friend of mine, Owen Temple, who you know.
Owen moved back down to Austin, Texas.
Recently, he lived here in Madison.
That one, I just finished up not too long ago, "The Moon Is Mad."
I wrote it when I had a little break.
- And it has a real, kind of honky-tonk charge on it.
You and Owen have performed that when he's been in Wisconsin, haven't you?
- That first song, we played that a couple of times.
And I play it with the Dirty Shirts, as well.
- The Dirty Shirts, Jeff's other band.
Where'd that name come from?
- A friend of mine said, "Hey, you're starting a honky-tonk band, right?"
I said, "Yep."
He said, "Do you have a name?"
I said, "Nope."
And she said, "How about the Dirty Shirts"?
And I said I like it.
- Done.
- And it was done.
Pretty much, that's how it happened.
- Now, the second song was almost a kind of a lament.
I don't know if it bothers you for me to hear kind of Gillian Welch, David Rawlings in that.
- It does not bother me at all.
I'm very honored.
- It has that real, sort of mountain miner.
- Yeah, I listen to a lot of their music.
I like their melodies a lot, so I was trying to mimic something similar to that, that mountain sound.
- Yeah, and you really pulled it off.
- Thanks.
- It has a couple of kind of tricky chord changes.
Right when you think it's going to go here, you kind of angle it off over there.
Were you trying to like, sort of get three songs into one?
- That was the goal.
I really try to economize as much as I can in my song writing.
- Three for one.
Are you charging us for three?
- I'm not charging, no.
This is one song.
That's all it is.
A bargain.
- We talk about Gillian Welch, and people like that.
People are starting to wake up to that.
A lot of people see these artists on shows like, like we air on "Austin City Limits."
But why do you think that people are going back to the country, for want of a better expression?
- I think that people really like the authenticity of that style of music.
I feel that, probably, there's a resurgence of interest in that type of music, because people are a little bit bored with sort of that Top 40 Country Music.
You know, some of it's okay, and some of it's pretty good.
But by and large, what you hear on Country Music radio right now is not really all that country.
And so people, I think, really kind of were hungry for artists like Gillian Welch to come out and start recording some original music that's done in that very traditional sound, but still kind of moving the music forward.
And I think there's a lot of interest in people who like, you know, No Depression magazine, and that sort of thing.
There's some great artists who are doing some really great stuff.
- What do you get out of it?
- I think pretty much the same thing that I suspect a lot of people do.
There's a real love of that sort of tradition and the folk nature of it.
The fact that there's just so much heart and soul, and so much behind the music and tradition.
You know, being able to hear the echoes, you know, of Ralph Stanley and the music of Gillian Welch is just sort of exciting for me.
So, that's what I get out of it.
It's just hearing, you know, sort of the way the old folks probably sang it.
And yet, at the same time, moving the music a little bit farther beyond that.
- It's really coming through.
We've got all these cameras and everything.
So will you play a couple more?
- Sure, yeah.
- Then I'll come out and bother you a little bit after that.
All right, thanks.
Jeff Burkhart.
- This is another song that I perform every now and again with the Dirty Shirts, a honky-tonk band here in Madison.

- You know, Andy, this is a recent acquisition for me.
I've had it for about two weeks now, and I love it.
I can't stop playing this guitar.
It's such a beautiful instrument.
It's made by Todd Cambio.
It's Fraulini guitars.
I don't know, you might be able to get a shot of inside there.
In that sound hole.
- Can you get in there?
- It's a Fraulini.
At fraulini.com is where Todd sells his guitars.
I think I'm the second guitar owner here in Madison.
But Todd's a neighbor of mine.
He used to be just a couple blocks away.
He builds beautiful guitars, and I'll tell you a little bit about them.
He started making guitars full-time about two years ago.
And the name "Fraulini" is a combination of two last names of his ancestors.
There are seven sisters that he has named all of his guitars after.
This one is the sixth model, and it's the first of that model.
The Annunziata.
You know what the name means?
- I'm afraid I'm going to have to start taking notes.
- Look it up.
- Okay.
- The Annunziata basically is the announcement of the birth-- the virgin birth of Christ, basically.
So this is an Italian family.
- It's a secular show, though.
- It's a secular show.
I'm not going to proselytize, or anything like that.
This is a beautiful guitar.
Todd, obviously, is very true to the tradition of guitar making.
This is sort of modeled after some old Stella guitars that were built in the '20s and '30s.
And Todd's done a really wonderful job of replicating that sound.
This already sounds like a vintage instrument.
- It's unbelievable.
It's maple body.
And it's got power.
It's bright.
And we want to hear you play it some more.
- All right.
- You've got a couple more?
- I sure do.
- I should forecast with you.
You play a couple more.
We'll see how the time is.
But most likely, after two songs, then we'll probably need to show some credits and then be over for the night.
Thanks for being on the 30 Minute Music Hour.
- Thanks a lot, Andy.
I'm going to do just a couple more songs here.
Obviously, original songs here.
I'll just take a little sip.
And again, a couple songs that I just finished working on, pretty recently.
Todd didn't guarantee that his guitars would always stay in tune, though, Andy.
That's part of the live nature of this show, right?
- Exactly.
(Jeff tuning guitar ) What do they say?
Close enough for bluegrass.
(Jeff laughs ) [tuning continues] That's good.
