Your host, Bob Barker.
Bob Barker Hi and welcome to the eighth annual Yuletide program for the senior citizens of Hawaiʻi.
We're featuring the music of the composer of Hawaiʻi's greatest Christmas songs, Alex Anderson.
(Performance: Holiday Hula) Holiday hula I'm in the mood for paper hats, whistles and noise From your singing lips, to your swinging hips Tell a story of holiday joy Holiday hula Now is the time for music all over the house Lift your voice and sing, let the music ring Everybody letta-go your blouse Can you make a motion like a shooting star?
A big makana might do Swing around the circle, but don't go too far So I can swing along with you Holiday hula Do it again and over again.
Hana hou!
You can stamp your feet, but hold onto your seat While we holoholo kaʻa, let's go.
Can you make a motion like a shooting star?
A big makana might do Swing around the circle, but don't go too far So I can swing along with you Holiday hula Do it again and over again.
Hana hou!
You can stamp your feet, but hold onto your seat While we holoholo kaʻa, let's go.
Holiday hula, let's do it again.
Bob Barker Alex Anderson and lovely Martha Carroll.
And this is Charles Dant.
Bud, we have a wonderful Christmas program lined up.
Thanks to you and the Association for Hawaiian Music.
Charles Dant Thank you, Bob for that plug.
Also, the songs, I'd like to mention that we, most of the songs we do on the show are those composed by our friend Alex Anderson.
Bob Barker And Andy and his wife, Peggy, will be here to sing his great Christmas hit, Mele Kalikimaka.
Charles Dant It's a great song.
It's a great song.
Also, we're going to have Charles K. L. Davis, one of our favorite Hawaiian tenors, Martha Carroll, which you've seen.
Bob Barker Martha, by the way, is promotion manager here at the station.
Charles Dant She is?
Well, she's a multi talented girl.
I'll say that.
Also, we're going to have Iwalani Kahame - I beg your pardon - Iwalani Kamahele, who is Sonny Kamahele's talented sister, a great singer.
And the Maile Aloha Singers, they're students here at the university.
They're directed by Bob Ingle.
And interestingly enough, one of the girls that sings with the Maile Aloha Singers was my former secretary with the Association for Hawaiian Music.
Her name is Dreena Kane.
She's one of the girls and one of the soloists is Mary Lou Key.
Bob Barker And Bud, now, don't forget to introduce the members of your all star band here.
Charles Dant Oh, yes.
Well, first is our friend Barney Isaacs, he's our top steel player here in the islands, and he is working with Danny Kaleikini out at Kahala Hilton.
Then is Norman Isaacs.
He plays over at the Blue Dolphin room with with Pua Almeida.
And then comes Benny Kalama.
He's our musical director on Hawaii Calls.
As a matter of fact, all these boys are on Hawaii Calls.
They're also all members of the Association for a Hawaiian Music.
And then, of course, there's, here's Sonny Kamahele.
He's, he's, uh, he plays, does a lot of luaus.
And right now he's at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
And of course, I mentioned, Pua and he's at the Blue Dolphin Room.
Bob Barker And a Merry Christmas to all, Charles Dant And a Merry Christmas to you, Bob.
(Performance: Spring Spends the Winter in Hawaiʻi) (Instrumental music) When the winds of winter blow and the weather's ten below, that's a perfect time to be in Hawaiʻi.
If you miss the birds that sing and you're longing for the spring.
Remember spring spends the winter in Hawaiʻi.
Hawaiʻi lovely as a jewel in the ocean blue.
Hawaiʻi waiting with aloha, for you, for you.
If the surf and sand or sea is the place you'd like to be, remember, spring spends the winter in Hawaiʻi.
Leave your furs.
You know you can for a coat of golden tan, then you know just why you ran to Hawaiʻi.
Wear a flower in your hair, not a worry or a care.
Remember spring spends the winter in Hawaiʻi.
Hawaiʻi,lovely as a jewel in the ocean blue.
Hawaiʻi waiting with aloha for you, for you.
If the beach at Waikīkī is the place you'd like to be, remember spring spends the winter in Hawaiʻi.
Spring spends the winter in Hawaiʻi.
Bob Barker What is Christmas?
It's tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future.
It's a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.
The miraculous power of music, according to legend of old, has always enraptured the people, the young as well as the old there never was a greater blessing bestowed on God's people on Earth than the charm of those beautiful carols composed to honor Christ's birth.
Thank God for this beautiful music which plays such a dominant part in bringing the sweet Christmas message of peace and goodwill to our heart.
(Performance: O Come All Ye Faithful) E hele mai ʻoukou Ka poʻe manaʻoʻio E hele hauʻoli i Betelehema Hele mai a ʻike I ka Moʻi hānau hou Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Kristo ka Haku O come all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem Come and adore Him Born the King of angels Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Hoʻonani kākou Iāia Kristo ka Haku Bob Barker Christmas.
Christmas is Santa Claus and reindeer.
It's the shrill, happy laughter of children.
It's gaily wrapped packages.
Christmas is the wise man bearing gifts to a lowly stable.
It's the prayer of a sleepy child.
Please, God let us have Christmas every day.
It's the prayer of the grown up by its side.
Please, God, let us have the spirit of Christmas every day.
(Performance: Christmas Down Hawaiʻi Way) It's Christmas down Hawaiʻi way Here's Santa in a red canoe Soon as he gives his toys away He'll do his Christmas hula for you No reindeer, not a sleigh in sight A snowflake wouldn't have a chance Down there beneath the coco palms Watch Santa do his hula dance He wears red pants and a coconut hat Nothing in between because it's cooler like that A flower lei, no pillow at all It's all him and it's not small It's Christmas down Hawaiʻi way The temperature is 72 Christmas where it's bright and gay See Santa do his hula for you He wears red pants and a coconut hat Nothing in between because it's cooler like that A flower lei, no pillow at all It's all him and it's not small It's Christmas down Hawaiʻi way The temperature is 72 Down there where it's bright and gay See Santa do his hula for you Santa do his hula Santa do his hula Santa do his hula for you Bob Barker Give me back again the magic that is part of Christmas Day and the dreams of youthful fancy that will never fade away.
Give me just a share of gladness.
Let me hear the bells again as they peel an old old message, peace on earth, goodwill to men.
(Performance: Christmas in Hawaiʻi) Christmas in Hawaiʻi is like Christmas ev'rywhere The bells ring out and children shout their greetings on the air Christmas in Hawaiʻi is the day when Christ was born There is no snow but people go to church on Christmas morn Ting, ting, ting-a-ling jingle bells ring from a steel guitar Ding, dong, ding-a-long all the bells ring from near and far Christmas in Hawaiʻi when we celebrate His birth Aloha then good will to men from ev'ry land on earth Ting, ting, ting-a-ling jingle bells ring from a steel guitar Ding, dong, ding-a-long all the bells ring from near and far Christmas in Hawaiʻi when we celebrate His birth Aloha then good will to men from ev'ry land on earth Bob Barker When Christmas time comes, there are those who dig deep in the wonderful past, where sweet memories sleep.
There's a prompting that sends us to searching through time, to recapture the threads of an era sublime.
Christmas seems tied to the old fashioned days, to the peaceful, the calm, the simplicity ways.
But time can't repeat.
Maybe it's better at rest, but I still think the old fashioned Christmas was best.
(Peformance: Winter Wonderland, Santa Claus is Coming to Town Medley) Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We're happy tonight.
Walking in a winter wonderland.
Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, as we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.
Walking in a winter wonderland.
He sees you when you're sleeping He knows when you're awake He knows if you've been bad or good So be good for goodness sake You better watch out (You better watch out) You better not cry (You better not cry) You better not pout (You better not pout) I'm telling you why (I'm telling you why) Santa Claus is comin' (He's coming) To town.
