And we've got some wonderful friends.
And the name of the group is Almost Home.
Hello, how are you?
Get that mic up a little bit.
- I'm doin' good.
Get that mic up a little bit there.
All right.
- I get the hug, though.
Is your mic on, let me hear it.
- Yes, it is.
- All right, well, I can hear you clearly.
How are you?
- I'm doing great.
- Good, and you guys have traveled from where?
- Ranburne, Alabama.
- And how far is that from, I guess here?
(chuckles) - It's about 100 miles.
- Wow, so you had to get up early?
- We did.
- Went to bed early.
- Yes, we did.
(chuckles) - Oh, great, well tell me, let's introduce everybody, your name is?
- Beatrice Flournoy, everybody calls me Bea.
- Ms. Bea, all right, and I think, go ahead.
You go ahead and introduce how you're gonna do it.
- Okay, and this is Davis Vaughn, he's our lead singer.
And he's from Roosterville, Georgia.
- Roosterville, Georgia.
- Roosterville.
- Yes, sir.
- How long you been in Roosterville, Georgia?
- All my life.
- Aw, my goodness.
So do you have like a Roosterville High School there?
- It's just a small unincorporated place.
- Okay.
- Our biggest claim to fame is an empty store building with Foghorn Leghorn painted on the side for-- - Ah, man, that sounds exciting.
(both chuckling) Alright, come on down this way.
- They have a stop sign.
(chuckles) - They, okay, alright.
And who is this gentleman?
- He's my favorite, and that's my husband, he sings tenor.

- All right, then.
Well, I tell you what, I know you're a praying man, because you said, "Brother George, "we're not going to start this show until we do prayer."
- Right.
- And I tell you what, that's, we need somebody to hold us to the line.
- That's right.
- How long you been together singing?
How long y'all been singing together?
- Almost 22 years.
- 22 years.
And whose bright idea was it?
- Well, it wasn't any of ours, really.
(chuckles) We had a drummer at church that wanted to start a group, and he asked our bass singer at that time, and the two of us, and we didn't have a lead singer until October, I think is when Davis joined us.
We started in September and he was about a month later.
- So Davis been with you 22 years.
- Almost, yeah.
- Wow.

- Wow, well, listen, we're getting ready to hear some more singing, okay?

During our course of traveling here and there and meeting all of the wonderful singers, we get a chance to meet beautiful people who have dedicated their lives.
And one of those wonderful persons was Ms. Martha Doris Stevens.
And she was a member of the group.
- Yes.
- And Regina and Sam and Jonathan, and-- - Amen.
- She made her transition.
- Yes.
- Not too long ago, and she, we got a chance to honor her as a golden vessel.
And this is the first time we've done this, Regina.
And we felt the need to, it was appropriate that we would salute her life.
- Thank you.
- By having-- - Thank you.
- Jonathan, her grandson, come up, and we're just gonna talk just a little bit about her.
And so between you and Regina, you non-talkative people.
- Right.
(all chuckling) - And, of course, we got Dennis Williams joining us, but let's see, let me go over here to Jonathan first.
- Sure.
- Jonathan's, your Grandmama, tell me your feelings about Grandma.
- I'll tell you what about Grandma.
She's the one that always drug me to all these singings.
And that's how I got into Southern Gospel music.
- Ah.
- So she used to drag me around, well, then she got to where she couldn't drive.
So guess what I got to do, I got to take her.
(group chuckling) So it kind of worked out, you know.
- That's awesome.
Now she was a bus driver, too, right?
She was, for 15 years, for the city of Albertville.
- Wow.
- And she'd let you know it, too.
(all chuckling) - That's right.
- Great, great.
Well, Regina, tell me about Grandma, Granny.
- Well, Granny, she and I became friends about 30 years ago when she was singing with another group.
And her brother-in-law and her sister, they had a family group going back then.
And then we just kind of clicked together, and everybody started calling her Granny, everywhere I went, it was Granny, it wasn't Martha, it was Granny.
- Uh-huh.
- And she was, she just turned 81 years young in May.
And we got to celebrate her birthday, and she was just lovely.
She'd been singing with our group, Regina Leath and New Grace, for 15-plus years.
- Yes.
And it's been an honor going up and down the road.
And if you missed your part, you got off of it, Granny would look at you.
(Brother George chuckling) And she'd shake your finger and say, "You're on this part, no, that ain't where it goes.
"You need to start over."
- Yep.
- She was one of these that really loved gospel music.
Charles Johnson, the Revivers, Vestal Goodman's, the heritage that we grew up on.
- Mm-hmm.
- That's what Martha loved.
And she loved each and every gospel group out in the field.
She had her favorites and she had everybody out there that she loved, and we love her, and we miss her dearly today.
- Right.
- Yes.
- But we know where she's at.
- Amen.
- She's rejoicing and she's with Jesus, her husband, brothers and sisters.
They was 14 kids there.
- Wow.
- And she was the last one.
But she's with them now.
And what a great celebration, folks, they're having.
- Yep, right.
Well, does she love Brother George too?
- She loved Brother George, yes.
(group chuckling) Every time, she watched you dedicated, ever since I introduced her to Alabama Gospel Roots, she stayed on that channel.
- Yep.
- Every single Saturday night.
- Wow.
- If she thought she was missing it, she'd call me and she'd say, "Regina, what time is Alabama Gospel Roots?
"I gotta see my George."
(group chuckling) And that was exactly the way she expressed it, her George.
- Oh, I'm so thankful.
- So she loved you, George, and all the staff.
She really appreciated everybody on Alabama Gospel Roots.
- Great, well, I'll tell you what, we could go on and on, but we want to hear from Sherry, right?
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- Okay, get that mic up.
- Well, Miss Granny, she was our prayer warrior.
So our number one prayer warrior, and I really miss that, really needed to call her last week, and get that prayer from her.
But I know she, her hands are in everything right now.
So, but she was our prayer warrior, and she'd always message me, "Sherry, put this on the prayer chain.
"Sherry, put this on the prayer chain."
But I miss her.
She's kept us on our toes and I miss her phone calls and, but we'll see her again.
- There you go, Sam?
- Granny in one word for me is funny, because it didn't matter what she was doing, somehow or another, she would always make you laugh.
- Ah-ha.
- Going up and down the roads, many a miles, on how many ever times we stopped.
How many ever singings, she found the fun.
It might've been the more ironic fun, but it was fun.
- Ah-ha.
We'd all just sit back, laugh and carry our memories of her love, and the fun that we share, each and every memory that we have.
- Yes, yes.
- Awesome, awesome.
Dan, anything you wanna say?
Get that mic over there from Sam.
- First time I met her, I had brought Darrell Luster into Gardendale.
- Oh yeah.
- And all she could say is, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."
- Oh yeah.
- And anytime you bring Darrell Luster in, call my church because we want to get him in.
- Yes.
(all chuckling) - That is beautiful.
- That is true.
- Well, Sister Martha Doris Stevens will forever be remembered, cherished, loved, and-- - Yes.
- We are just going to be honored today to be able to honor her.
And so your family will be able to have this for your great-great-great grandchildren to watch.
