Listen, it's "Alabama Gospel Roots" and we want everybody to call a neighbor, call a friend, let 'em know that we are back again.
Yes, indeed.
Got The Bunkleys on with us.
Is that right?
- That's right.
- That's right.
- Great, well welcome to "Alabama Gospel Roots."
- Amen, brother.
- All right, we're glad that you would join us.
- Oh, we're tickled today to be here.
I tell you, really.
- Right now, you are not Alabamians, but you have friends in Alabama.
- Oh yeah.
- Lots of friends in Alabama.
- Great.
So get that mic up for me, okay?
- Okay.
- Get that mic just like you're gonna get ready to sing, like you've been singing.
Now where are you guys from?
- We're from Trenton, South Carolina, where all the peach trees are.
- Trenton now Clanton's got a problem with that.
Clanton, Alabama is the peach trees over there.
(all laughing) You in Alabama now, you're going to have to kind of bring it down a little bit.
Okay, no problem.
(all laughing) - Say that quietly.
- All right, sure.
- All right, but listen, all the peach trees and nobody brings a peach.
- We don't have any.
- They're out of season.
- They're out of season?
- Out of season.
- Well, I mean, you store some back.
(all laughing) See, they trying to wiggle out of this.
- Yeah, next time.
- Next time.
- Next time.
- Next time.
- See now I've heard that before, next time.
- Oh yeah, yeah.
- All right, well listen, I want you to introduce everybody.
- Okay.
- All right.
- This is my husband, Richard Lynn Bunkley.
He's mostly referred to as Doc.
That's his nickname.
- Doc?
- Doc.
- Yep.
- All right.
- This is our son Dwayne.
He plays every instrument he wants to play.
- Wow.
- And all of the soundtracks you heard, he made 'em.
- Wonderful and he wrote two of those songs and then together they wrote the other one.
- Right, so Doc and Little Doc, okay.
And you are?
- Oh yeah.
- I am Peggy.
- Miss Peggy.
How long y'all been married, Miss Peggy?
- 47 years.
- 47.
- But we celebrate this year standing next to each other, singing the gospel for 50 years.
- That is awesome, awesome.
So you just have one son?
- Yep, that's it.
That's all we could handle.
- Yeah.
(Peggy laughing) - Well he's been spoiled at the tune of 10.
- Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- Yes, yes.
- To say the least.
- That's all right.
That's all right.
We won't call him spoiled.
He's just got a little extra treatment.
- Yes, exactly right.
- There you go.
So, Little Doc, tell me, how did you begin to pick up all these instruments?
- Well, that's actually a pretty funny story.
One day I got grounded and- What did you get grounded for?
That's, we want the juicy side.
- I don't remember.
- Oh, that's.
- Look, look, look.
- That's convenient.
- Yeah, I was maybe, yeah, yeah, 10, 11 years old.
And they were going somewhere on a Saturday and I was told I was grounded.
And she left me a list of chores to do, and I don't remember exactly how it played out, but she said something on the lines of, "The only way you can get out to doing these chores is learn to play an instrument by the time I get home."
So I said, "Challenge accepted."
- Hold on, hold on, hold on right there.
(Richard laughing) - What caused you to say that?
- Because I didn't figure he could do it.
(Richard laughing) He'd have to do the chores.
- He'd have to do the chores.
- Yeah, so we had a piano in the house.
So I broke out the the VCR and old school TV, and hooked it up by the piano.
And we had a little video on there of a guy teaching piano licks.
And I'd watch the piano, write down what he did, and then figure out how to do it.
And then by the time they got home, I was able to play like three or four licks for 'em.
- Wow.
And what did you think?
- I was like, man, now I gotta do those chores.
(all laughing) - Awesome, okay.
Well listen, it was awesome.
Hey, out there, challenge your children to do something you don't think they can do.
All right, well thank you Bunkleys for joining us on "Alabama Gospel Roots."
- Thank you for having us.
- Our pleasure.
- Great to be here, yes.
- Great.
- Well, we wanna hear some more great gospel music while you're here.
Can we get that?
- Sure.
- Good, Amen.
- Okay, I want you to sing for the next four hours.
Can you do that?
I'm challenging.
- We can do it.
We can do it.
- With repeats.
(all laughing) More great gospel music on "Alabama Gospel Roots."

Saturday night in the state of Alabama with "Alabama Gospel Roots."
It's been a great day for you.
And I know what, it's a great night right now.
And as I always like to say, this is one of my favorite segments of the show where we get a chance to shout out to some of the beautiful cities and all the wonderful people there, as well as to our nursing homes and to our rehab centers.
All right, here we go.
Let's get right into it.
Lisbon Alabama, hello to you.
Lockhart, Alabama, hello to you.
Repton, Alabama, we're saying hello to you.
Silas, Alabama, we love you too.
And Uniontown, Alabama, hello, hello, hello.
Now let's say hello to some of my wonderful friends in the nursing homes as well as the rehab centers.
I like this place here just 'cause I like the name.
It says Kirkwood by the River.
Yes, I called your name.
That's in Birmingham.
Westgate Village in Brewtown, Alabama.
Cherokee County Nursing Home in Centre, Alabama.
Woodlawn Village Healthcare in Coleman, Alabama.
And Resurrection Life Center, I like that, in Deatsville.
Hello to all of the fine people there.
All of the workers and those who are in charge, who are taking care of all your beautiful people who are getting your lives back together, who find a place to have a community that you can talk to and won't be sitting at home all by yourself.
And we're just letting you know that we appreciate you, want you to do some exercise, and eat that healthy food and just get yourselves strong so you can live all these wonderful happy days and laugh a lot.
All right, now it's time to salute our golden vessel.
You ready for it?
All right, well this time tonight we are going to Town Creek, Alabama.
That's right where Clyde and Vernell Goode are there and they've been married 60 years.
That's right.
You know all them Goode brothers that played at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.
Well, five children they have, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Wow, what a family reunion.
I'm telling you, Sister Vernell, I know you are a good cook to feed all these children.
And they were educators in that area, still educators, you never stop educating.
But in the system, Brother Clyde was 46 years as a coach, vice principal and principal of several schools all over the place.
And Sister Vernell, guess what?
30 years for her.
And I understand that she was a librarian as part of that.
So we salute you for all the lives that you have touched.
And the motto for life from Brother Clyde is this.
And I know it has worked because of the way, well, by the way, let me say, they're members of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Town Creek.
Well, the motto is, "If you start something, finish it."
Wow, what great info that is.
What great encouragement.
What great instructions.
Not only that, but "You are just as important as the next person."
I like that too.
And he says, in the end, "You are responsible for your own actions."
My goodness.
I can see why those boys could run that ball and do all that and have great character because of the training.
Okay, here we go.
Sister Vernell Goode and Brother Clyde Goode, you are golden vessels on "Alabama Gospel Roots" and we are dedicating this entire show to you and all of the good that you've done for our world.

(both laughing) - You've been traveling a lot since we talked to you last.
- I have.
I've been traveling a lot.
I was on the West coast for about three and a half weeks doing a series of meetings from Washington and ending in California.
Saw some wonderful results there.
People got saved and people healed, delivered by the power of the Lord.
And so, we're excited about that.
In a tent meeting, currently right now.
Every night we've been preaching down there having a wonderful time in Centerville, Alabama.
- Under the tent?
- Under the old fashioned gospel tent.
- Wow.
- Going back to my roots.
- I gotcha, I gotcha.
Now, where are you originally from?
- I'm originally from West Virginia.
I was born there, spent the first 12 years of my life in and out of West Virginia, because we traveled full-time from the time I was three years old until now.
And so, but my home place is in West Virginia.
It's where I'm originally from.
It's where I was born, but I've been in Alabama for probably almost 30 years now.
- Okay, so now, was your dad a pastor?
- He was not a pastor.
He traveled, he drove, me and my mother.
We sang and my mom has written over 300 songs, been on the radio stations all across the country, and so we would sing and minister and my dad would travel and set up the tents and take care of all the business, all the logistics and all that, so that's what he did.
- So you were doing that at like at 12?
- I started singing when I was two, yeah.
There's an old cassette tape floating around with me singing harmony with my mom in my playpen at two years old.
- Hey, that's awesome.
- That's all I've ever known.
- Well, all of that, and you still got that fire.
- Oh yeah.
- I'm gonna jump out of the way.
I don't want to take up any of your time with me going like that.
I want you to go, like you go.
Okay?
- Amen.
- Alright, so let's hear another great gospel song.
