(audience applauding) - Thanks, Brother Fletch.
It is so good to be home here.
And Lenny and I, man, I tell you what, he is one of my mentors to say the least, speaking of Muscle Shoals heroes, and Lenny, I'm fanboying you.
(laughs) I wrote for FAME Publishing Company and was proud to be... Man, that was so cool.
When I was younger with Rick Hall over at FAME, I was a songwriter, and I couldn't believe it, man.
But I wrote this little song, and Rick and Robert Burn were producing a band y'all might remember called Shenandoah.
Anybody remembers Shenandoah?
(audience applauding) Well, they decided to record a song, that song that I wrote.
I was working in radio at the time.
Can you tell?
I kind of still have some of the radio chops going there.
I was working in Lexington in a cotton field.
I was the only employee basically on the air at this point.
So, Jana calls me in late '89, "Mark, in three hours, we're about to record your song on Shenandoah."
And I'm going, "Okay," and I'm trying to think this through.
I thought, "Oh, yeah, call Mama, always.
Call Mama."
I said, "Mama, can you be here in 20 minutes to the station?
I need to teach you how to run the radio station so I can go to FAME and hear Shenandoah record my first big cut."
And she said, "Baby, I'll be right there."
I showed her how to cue the records and how to play the commercials.
She didn't have to open the mic.
So I said, "Okay, we're gonna draw the shade, lock the door, don't answer to anybody."
'Cause there weren't cell phones, and I said, "I'll be back probably about six hours."
Mike McGuire and Marty Raven met me and they said, "Well, you know, Rick's been talking about cutting a line out of the chorus."
I said, "Mike, I don't care if you cut the title out of the song, I'm getting a Shenandoah.
I don't care if they cut the whole chorus out."
So, they did take a line out, and it actually worked.
Rick was so brilliant.
He and Robert Burn produced this, and Shenandoah sang it.
But Lenny came in, Robert and you were always great friends, and Lenny, you came in and sang a little bit of a high harmony with the guys, didn't you?
- [Lenny] Yeah.
- And I hope you're gonna sing that harmony with me now.
- Yeah, it's a high one, and when you get older, you lose some of that high stuff, you know?
But I'll try.

(upbeat music) Well, I'm gonna do a song.
Spooner Oldham.
How many people know Spooner?
I know you do.
Everybody.
(audience applauding) He's my first cousin, so, you know, I wanted to do what Spooner did, write songs and play and do all that fun stuff.
Well, about 15 years ago, or maybe a little more, Spooner and Neil Young were recording in Nashville.
So, Neil has this brain aneurysm, to make a long story short, and they fly Neil outta there, and anyone who knows Spooner, how laid back he is, he called our church secretary in Center Star, Alabama, which is, of course, about 30 minutes from the Shoals, out near Killen.
She had the old rotary phone, Miss Peggy.
So Spooner wanted his friend on the prayer list, and he'd go, "Yeah, Miss Peggy, I wanna put my friend Neil on the prayer list."
And she said, "Well, Lyndon, we've got Neil Vickers, Neil Anderson, there are about 40 Neils."
"Oh, yeah, it's Neil Young."
Miss Peggy didn't know who Neil Young was.
So I come into church the next day and see... You know, there's always these people on there like Aunt Mamie who had arthralgia, like, soreness in her hip joint, and we're praying for that.
We had these people on there.
Embedded amongst them was Neil Young.
I couldn't believe it.
The preacher happened to be my age, so he got the Neil Young reference and he made a quick off the cuff remark.
He said, "My, my, hey, hey, let us pray."
So I thought that was pretty dang brilliant.
So let me shut up and play this song here.

So we have a mutual friend, Mac McAnally, and Mac and I have written several songs through the years, and Mac would always call me when he had an idea for a gospel song, 'cause he knew I wrote a lot of gospel songs.
And so I was on a little holiday with my family in Florida, and he called and he said, "I've got a title, 'You First'."
I said, "Okay."
He said, "You know, when you're young, you think about yourself, and you get older, you realize there's somebody bigger than you," and I said, "Okay, sounds good."
The more I thought about it when I got home, I thought, "What if it went a different way?"
And so I wrote the first verse and good portion of the chorus, and I brought it to him and he went... He has this mannerism, he goes, "Mm-hm."

And it was a big, old hit, but about 10 years ago, I was at my publishing company in Nashville, and songwriters will tell you, when you work all day, you beat your brain.
At the end of the day, I just almost couldn't talk.
I couldn't, like, say my name or anything.
And at the end of the day one day, a buddy of mine who I knew had been on "The Voice" and I hadn't heard from him, Red Marlow, and he was actually a character in this song, "That's What I Love About Sunday".
He was the mean, little freckle-faced kid.
So, I'm tired and I look like Einstein with my hair more boofed up than it is now, you know?
And I get the FaceTime call, and I see Red Marlow, and I hit it, and it's Red and Blake Shelton, and they're on a TV set, and I look like, you know, a hot mess, so you kind of perk up into instant, "Woo," you know?
"Hey, Mark, Blake and Red, we are gonna do your song, 'That's What I Love About Sunday'.
Do you care if we do it on 'The Voice' tomorrow night?"
And, you know, I'm like, "Well, heck yeah."
And we talked for a minute.
So they used that little segment on "The Voice".
It was my 15 seconds of fame.
Most people get 15 minutes.
I actually counted it, Lenny, I got 15 seconds on "The Voice".
- Oh, that's funny.
- But it was real, real cool, and Red knew that I'd wrote him into the song.
My mother is written into the song, she's Miss Betty, but she actually sang great, so to give it poetic license and to give it some angst and make it interesting, we changed it, we took poetic license and corrupted her vocal and made her sing bad.
So, she was always proud of that.

My grandmother, I used to hang around a lot with her.

Around the turn of the century in 1901, it was so debaucherous and rough, really dangerous for females and children to go out on the streets of Center Star, believe it or not, at night in 1901.
So the town fathers came up with this idea.
As long as church was going on, the preacher, that's what they say, preached two weeks straight, filibustering to keep the bars closed.

- So I write a lot of gospel stuff through the '80s and '90s and 2000s.
I became a follower of Jesus in 1981.
He changed my life for the better.
Lost my record deal, it was a terrible career decision, but it was the best life decision I ever made.
And so I've written a lot of songs in that genre.
This one in particular was recorded by Michael W. Smith, and it has literally gone around the world.
I've traveled 3 million air miles and I've toured in 26 countries, but you probably know it, have sung it in your church maybe.
It's a beautiful picture of what Jesus did for us.
