There's a lot of activity going near the Duluth ship Canal on Park Point this month.
The US Army Corps of Engineers began its twenty twenty one maintenance dredging of the Duluth Harbor last week and is finishing cleanup of debr inadvertently placed on the bea Shredded tin cans were found on after the replenishing project last season.
We talked with the Army Corps ch of construction about this year So currently we're doing the FY-21 maintenance dredging Duluth-Superior Harbor contract.
It's a contract.
It's actually something that we annually, part of our normal maintenance dredging program through the Detroit district.
So each and every year we get fu to keep and maintain the harbor Each and every year there sediment that comes down or accumulates throughout variou within the harbor.
So, again, this is just to take of those those accumulations or to ensure that the channel is is deep enough for the ships to go back and forth.
Though in some cases, we do beach nourishment.
We did that for a number of year We also do other projects where we supplement maybe restoration We work closely with some of our our federal partners, like the EPA and state partners like the MPCA and Minnesota DNR DNR, to supplement some of these restoration projec where we're actually creating h for the wildlife and aquatic various species.
Nurturing that beach, it helps in two ways.
One way it does help us as a court because we we need an ultimate home for this material.
And number two, it does also hel Point residents as well, especially the ones where there' erosion issues and things where has been eroding away due to hi We had a survey done this spring and identify areas that that had additional debris, can debris primarily and other We have did a few rounds of surf cleanup that was with our own use's employees and operations.
So we've completed that thus far So we actually put that into our our maintenance dredging contract this year for them to perform the full de for a number of the areas that we ourselves.
Our internal crew could not reac So what that entitled is, they will go out with an excava You could probably see the longe reach excavator in the backgrou They went out, excavate those ar and ran it through a screen to be able to capture a remaining debris that we discovered in that survey from the Springs So this year with this contract, we put in some some different steps.
So when the material comes to ou to placing getting it placed onto the beach, it goes to a offloading or tran And at that transfer, boxer's a last year, the screeners are la So based on some of the issues and concerns that we had last y we've required that contractor to reduce that size of screen t to prevent things like cans and those things to go through the Yeah.
So this contract, they started roughly the first w of August, which was last week.
And this contract, they're allowed to go up to 30 Right now, the contractor is is to finish up early, probably more of the the first p of September, maybe mid Septemb I think the other thing just men is that safety is our priority all along throughout this proce Obviously, we mentioned some of the hiccups that we had in twen And I just want want everybody to know that the Corp is doing our best to try to make that safety is out there.
We're doing our best.
Obviously, there has been signage that was out there as well to to warn people.
WHERE DOING HER BEST, OBVIOUSLY.
THERE HAS BEEN SIGNAGE OUT THERE TO WARN PEOPLE.
NOW THAT THE CLEANUP EFFORT IS DONE, WE ARE FINISHING UP NOW AND SOME OF THE OTHER SAFEGUARDS THAT I CAN ASSURE YOU WE ARE DOING OUR BEST TO KEEP THE BEACH AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE.

♪ >> FILM FESTIVAL IS BACK IN ORGANIZER SADIE'S BETTER THAN EVER, THE FESTIVAL KICKS OFF NEXT FRIDAY WITH A DIVERSE GROUP OF OFFERINGS.
ORGANIZERS SAY THE NEW VISION FOR THE DECADE-OLD FILM FEST IS TO CHALLENGE THE NORM WHEN IT COMES TO FILM MAKING.
HERE TO TELL US MORE IS MEGAN MCGARVEY, THE FESTIVAL'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR.
AND KHAYMAN GOODSKY IS A LOCAL FILMMAKER AND A PROGRAMMER WITH THE FILM FESTIVAL.
WELCOME, THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE.
I WONDERED, JUST WHAT IS THE DULUTH SUPERIOR FILM FESTIVAL AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
>> IT IS ONE OF OUR REGIONAL FESTIVALS HERE IN THE TWIN PORTS AND IT INCLUDES BOTH THE MAKERS FROM ACROSS THE BRIDGE AND OVER IN SUPERIOR AS WELL AS GO MAKERS HERE IN DULUTH.
IT HAS BEEN AROUND 10 YEARS, IT STARTED OUT AS A SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL AND IT WAS FREE TO THE PUBLIC DURING THAT TIME.
SO IT HAS GROWN SINCE THEN.
THAT IS THE HISTORY ABOUT IT.
AND IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE A FILM FESTIVAL LIKE THE DULUTH SUPERIOR FILM FESTIVAL BECAUSE IT'S HERE TO HELP THE MAKERS HERE IN THE COMMUNITY HERE, TO HELP THEM GROW AND MEET EACH OTHER SO WE CAN BUILD THAT COMMUNITY UP.
DENNIS: SURE.
>> AS WE MENTIONED IN THE INTRO, KHAYMAN, THE FESTIVAL WAS CANCELED LAST YEAR, BUT IN THAT GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO RETHINK WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE AND PLAN THE PROGRAM DIFFERENTLY?
>> IT DEFINITELY GAVE CAUSE FOR THE MAKERS DO HAVE TIME TO WORK ON THEIR ART LITTLE MORE, WHICH IS WHY -- WHAT WE LIKE, A LOT OF FILL MAKERS LIKE TO DO THAT IT NOT BE IN A RUSH.
AT THIS YEAR WE WANTED TO TAKE A BIG APPROACH -- DIFFERENT APPROACH TO HOW WE DO THINGS TO SEE IF THAT WILL WORK BETTER, BECAUSE ARTISTS GROW AND EXPAND AND WE AS A COMMUNITY WHO PUT ON FILM FESTIVALS MUST DO THE SAME THING.
>> WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE FILM FESTIVAL INDUSTRY?
>> I LIKE MAKING FILMS, BUT WHEN I HEARD THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE AN INDIGENOUS FILM SECTION I WANTED TO BE PART OF THAT BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN HIGHLIGHTING HIGHLIGHTING -- HIGHLIGHTING INDIGENOUS ARTISTS TO TELL AUTHENTIC STORIES.
I WANTED TO BE PART OF SUPPORTING DATA AND UPLIFTING THESE ARTS.
DENNIS: MEGAN, WHAT ABOUT YOURSELF?
>> OH MY GOODNESS, THE FACT THAT IT WAS -- I AM A MIDWEST LADY BORN AND RAISED, SO THE FACT THAT THEY WANTED TO REACH ACROSS THE BRIDGE AND BRING ON SOME MORE WISCONSIN FILMMAKERS, I'M ORIGINALLY FROM WISCONSIN AND I THINK IT IS SO AMAZING WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO EXPANDED OUT TO ALL OF THE MIDWEST.
WE HAVE FILMS COMING FROM IOWA, MICHIGAN, DETROIT, OBVIOUSLY WISCONSIN AND MINNESOTA ESPECIALLY.
BUT IT IS REALLY AWESOME TO SEE THE IDEA OF IT YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE, YOU CAN MAKE FILMS IN THE MIDWEST, YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO L.A. OR NEW YORK TO MAKE AMAZING STUFF, AND IT WAS A PRIVILEGE TO WATCH SOME OF THESE AWESOME FILMS WE GOT IN FOR THE PROGRAM AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING THEM.

SO IT IS IMPORTANT -- BIGGER SENSE.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO KICK OFF THIS FESTIVAL BECAUSE WE ARE ON INDIGENOUS LANDS AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT AND HIGHLIGHT THOSE ARTISTS.
>> WHAT CAN THOSE WHO ATTEND THE FILM FESTIVAL NEXT WEEKEND IS EXPECT TO SEE AND DO?
>> YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE A SPECTACULAR ARRANGEMENT OF FEATURE-LENGTH AND SHORT FIRM -- FORM FILMS, YOU WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO SEEK Q&A'S FROM KHYAMAN AND MYSELF -- KHAYMAN AND MYSELF, AND BADGE HOLDERS WILL BE ABLE TO GO TO AFTER PARTIES AND ENJOY NETWORKING EVENTS AS WELL.
>> SO YOU ARE USING THE THEATER IN TOWN?
>> YES, WE ARE USING ZEITGEIST, IT WILL BE OUR MAIN POINT OF BEING IN THIS FESTIVAL.
>> YOU MENTIONED THE INDIGENOUS FILMS BEING INCLUDED.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER TYPES OF FILMS OR AREAS THAT PEOPLE MIGHT FIND INTERESTING?
>> THEY MIGHT FIND OUR MIDWEST ANGLE INTERESTING, WE ALSO HAVE THE DOCUMENTARIES FOR SURE, WE ALSO HAVE THE CLIMATE CHANGE -- LIKE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ONE.
WE ALSO HAVE ONE THAT DEALS WITH SOCIAL ISSUES, SO FOR INSTANCE, OUR DOCUMENTARY "BELLY OF THE BEAST" DOES A DEEP DIVE INTO CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES LIKE ABOUT WOMEN IN PRISON BEING STERILIZED AND THE KIND OF STUFF.
>> ARE THEY ALL PRETTY STERILIZED -- HEAVY TOPICS?
>> OUR SHORT BLOCK IS LIGHTHEARTED AT TIMES AND WE DO HAVE SOME VERY -- ALTHOUGH SOME FEATURES MAY BE HARD-HITTING AT FIRST, THE END LIGHTHEARTED AT THE END.
ONE OF THOSE BEING THE AMAZING STORM LIKE, -- "STORMLAKE" WE ARE EXCITED TO AIR THAT.
>> THE FESTIVAL HAS ONGOING DUTCH UNDERGROUND TRANSMISSION OF THE PAST 10 YEARS.
>> HAS TRANSFORMED BECAUSE WE HAVE FEATURES AND SHORTS, IT USED TO BE JUST SHORT FILMS, AND IT HAS BEEN EXPENDED BY THESE CATEGORIES.
WE KNOW EXPENDED THOSE AS WELL.
>> WHAT TYPICALLY HAPPENS TO A FILM THAT IS SCREENED AT A FESTIVAL LIKE US?
DOES IT JUST KIND OF LAY ON THE SHELF AFTER THAT OR DOES IT GO PLACES?
>> YOU START SMALL WITH LOCAL FILM FESTIVALS AND THEN YOU GET THE WORD OUT.
OUR FILMMAKING COMMUNITY ACTUALLY SPREADS THE WORD OUT.
SOY HOPE THESE FILMS THAT COME THROUGH OUR FILM FESTIVAL WILL BE ABLE TO GO ON TO BIGGER ONES IN THESE ARTISTS WILL GET MORE WRECK NATION.
THAT IS WHAT MY HOPE IS.
-- RECOGNITION.
>> AND YOUR FILM HAS GONE PLACES.
>> ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS OUR FILM WENT ANYWHERE IS BECAUSE OF THE NETWORKING WE WERE ABLE TO DO.
WE FOUND OUT HOW WE WERE ABLE TO GET MY FILM ONTO AMAZON BECAUSE OF FILM MAKERS THAT KNEW ABOUT THAT, AND WE WERE ABLE TO CONNECT THAT WAY.
>> WHO GENERALLY ATTENDS A FILM FESTIVAL?
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER?
>> OH, GOODNESS.
MAINLY PEOPLE BUT OBVIOUSLY ENJOY FILM, AND ESPECIALLY A GREAT ART COMMUNITY THAT WE HAVE IN DULUTH.
AND EVERY DAY DILUTE THE END -- DULUTHIAN WOULD ENJOY THIS.
