County officials: Diverting 911 fees is ‘double taxation’

If you own a phone in New Jersey you may have noticed a 90-cent fee tacked on to your monthly bill. That money is meant to go toward maintenance and upgrades of the state’s 911 emergency response system. The state is expecting to collect more than $100 million in those fees for this year alone. Yet county leaders say their 911 call centers haven’t seen a dime of that money in years.
