THIS TIME OF YEAR OUR FAVORITE STORIES.
FOR OTHERS IT'S MAKING A TRADITIONAL FEAST.
FOR MANY IN COLUMBUS IS GOING TO A LOCAL PRODUCTION.
THIS YEAR A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE SHORT NORTH STATE AND CATHOLIC TICKED OFF AT THE OHIO THEATRE.
WE TALKED WITH TWO MEMBERS OF THE CREATIVE TEAM AND HAD BEHIND THE SCENES LOOKS AT HOW IT ALL CAME TOGETHER.
>> I AM TOM CHRISTOPHER MARON AND I HAVE WRITTEN THE ADAPTATION AND I AM PLAYING SCROOGE.
WE HAD THROUGH COLUMBUS AS WE HAVE MANY OTHER COMMUNITIES, I WORK WITH THE CARAVAN FOR A COUPLE YEARS BACK IN THE LATE 90s AND I LOVED THEM.
THEY ARE NO LONGER TOURING.
>> CAT CALLED ME TO THE OFFICES OF CAPA AND WANTED TO KNOW IF WE COULD BRING A CHRISTMAS CAROL BACK TO THE COLUMBUS, OHIO.
>> THEY APPROACHED EDWARD AND HE TOLD ME THAT AND I SAID ARE YOU RIDING IT?
HE SAID NO, I WOULD RATHER DO ANYTHING.
I SAID CAN I WRITE IT?
AND THAT'S WHERE I SNAGGED IT.
I'VE ALWAYS LOVED RIDING AND I'VE ALWAYS LOVED DOING A CHRISTMAS CAROL IN THE NOVELLA SO THE CHANCE TO SYNC MY OWN TEETH INTO THE ADAPTATION WAS ONE THAT I CANNOT PASS UP.
AN ADAPTATION IS TAKING THE SOURCE MATERIAL AND A START FROM THERE AND I LOOK AT THE OTHER INCARNATIONS OF THIS SHOW.
I GREW UP WATCHING MR. MAGOO SO THAT WILL HOLD THE DEEPEST PLACE IN MY HEART.
BUT I'VE SEEN ALL THE FILM VERSIONS AND DONE A STAGE VERSION OR TWO THROUGHOUT MY TIME AND I WANTED THIS TELLING TO BE TOLD THROUGH A SPECIFIC LENS THAT IS ALWAYS HONORING THE DICKENS TEXT.
I LOVE THE LANGUAGE AND KEPT MUCH OF IT.
I HOPE I MADE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR A MODERN AUDIENCE.
IN MY VERSION I WANTED SCROOGE'S REDEMPTION, SPOILER ALERT, SCROOGE IS REDEEMED AT THE END.
I WANTED HIS REDEMPTION ABOUT LOSS OF HIS AVOIDANCE OF DEATH AND LESS ABOUT HIS FEAR OF MORTALITY AND MORE ABOUT A WIDER SPREAD GENEROSITY AND HOW HE HAS RESPONSIBILITY AND SO DO WE ALL TO MAKE THE WORLD BETTER ON A MACRO LEVEL.
I STARTED FROM THERE WHICH IS REALLY THE END OF THE PLAY AND WORK BACKWARDS UNPACKING THAT WAY.
THAT WAS MY APPROACH TO THE SCRIPT.
I HAVE ENJOYED ADAPTATIONS FROM THE MUPPETS TO THE COUNTRY'S PRODUCTION, I LIKE THE WHOLE SPECTRUM.
I WANT MY LENS TO BE JUST A LITTLE BIT DARKER TO REFLECT THE NEED WE HAVE RIGHT NOW IN THIS WORLD FOR A WIDER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR GRACE AND GENEROSITY.
I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS AS RESEARCH.
IT SEEMS LIKE 20 CITY HAS THEIR 20-YEAR-OLD OR 30-YEAR-OLD PRODUCTION SOME OF THEM ARE STUNNING TO WATCH.
THEY FEEL ROOTED IN THE TIME THEY WERE CREATED.
I AM EXCITED ABOUT CREATING A PRODUCTION SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR AN AUDIENCE OF TODAY USING THE CONVENTIONS WE HAVE GROWN TO KNOW AND LOVE AS A MODERN BROADWAY TOUR AUDIENCE AND OUR REGIONAL AUDIENCE AND MAKE SURE IT IS ACTOR DRIVEN.
I WANT ONE THAT IS USING OUR CORPS OF 22 ACTORS TO TELL THE STORY IN A WAY THAT IS CINEMATIC AND THAT FLOWS AND THAT ISN'T A LOT OF STALLING OR BLACKOUT OR SCENE STEALING AND INCORPORATING MOVEMENT AS A CHOREOGRAPHER IT'S IMPORTANT.
BEING ABLE TO INCORPORATE MOVEMENT INTO A PLAY IS A UNIQUE PIECE I AM EXCITED ABOUT TACKLING.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE ARE DEDICATED TO HERE IS BRINGING IN GUESTS TO COLUMBUS SHOWING THE MORE AMAZING THINGS IN COLUMBUS AND GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AND JOBS FOR LOCAL ARTISTS HERE AND BECAUSE OF IT IT WILL MAKE US A UNIQUE CANDIDATE OR LIBRARY AND I HAVE THE CONNECTIONS BACK IN NEW YORK WHERE I AM TRYING TO BRING IN CREATIVE'S AND ACTORS, ET CETERA AND A WEALTH OF AMAZING TALENT, DESIGNERS, ACTORS, ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS HERE IN COLUMBUS THAT WE CAN BRING ON THE PROJECT AS WELL AND I LOVE THE NPR OF THE ENTIRE SHOW BEING BUILT HERE IN COLUMBUS OHIO.
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR AND WE HOPE TO HAVE MANY MORE AND I HOPE IT WILL BE HOMEGROWN.

IT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ENTIRE CAST.
THEY ALL HAVE PIECES OF PRESENT WHO TELL THE STORY THROUGHOUT.
AND FUTURE IS NOT YOUR GRIM REAPER.
IT IS MORE OF A GOLLUM CREATURE AND THE MOVEMENT-BASED CREATURE EVEN THOUGH IT IS A FRESH STAGING AND BOOK FOR THE SHOW IT IS STILL A CHRISTMAS CAROL AND THE STORY YOU HAVE GROWN TO LOVE YOUR ENTIRE CHILDHOOD.
IT HAS A LOT OF TRADITION.
THE MUSIC IS BASED IN THAT TIME.
AS WELL.
I LOVE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO BRING A FRESH TAKE ON IT BUT IT IS STILL THE CHRISTMAS CAROL THAT YOU KNOW AND LOVE.

I BUILD FURNITURE OUT OF SCRAP METTLE.
I AM PROBABLY ABOUT 250 POUNDS OF SCRAP METTLE.
MY WELDING STUDIO.
I HAVE AN IDEA AND THE SCRAP METTLE GIVES ME AN IDEA.
I GO OUT AND START COLLECTING PARTS.
USUALLY I DESIGN 10-12 PIECES AT ONCE SO THERE ARE PIECES AND PARTS EVERYWHERE THAT HAVE A FUTURE AS FURNITURE EITHER LAMPS, TABLES OR CHAIRS IS WHAT I MAKE.
FURNITURE CAN BE ART.
THE FUNCTIONALITY THAT PEOPLE THINK IT IS FUNCTIONAL, IT IS NOT ART.
I THINK IT IS BECAUSE IT CHANGES PEOPLE, JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN TOUCH IT AND SIT ON IT DOESN'T MEAN IT IS NOT ART.
I FIRST GOT STARTED IN COLLEGE AND I TOOK ALL THE BASIC CLASSES AND DRAWING AND PAINTING AND I CALLED DOWN TO CERAMICS FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS.
AT THE END OF THE SIX SEMESTER HOURS CERAMIC TEACHER SAID YOU GET ALL YOUR STUFF OUT OF HERE AND I THOUGHT I WILL TAKE A BREAK AND I TOOK SCULPTURE AND WELDING.
I WAS FRUSTRATED.
I MADE MY PARTNER A CHAIR IS A JOKE.
MY BRAIN LIT ON FIRE.
IT COULD COME FROM MY HEAD OR THE MATERIALS AND I SQUEEZE THE MATERIALS INTO MY IDEA OR VICE VERSA.
I STUDY ALL KINDS OF FURNITURE, ESPECIALLY 18TH CENTURY.
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FURNITURE HAS A LOT OF AMAZING DETAIL.
I USED SOME GLASS, SOME WOOD AND MOSTLY IT IS ALL SCRAP METTLE AND FARM UP NORTH I GO TO A REAL SCRAPYARD OR IF I'M DOWN SOUTH HERE I GO INTO MY OWN SCRAPYARD AND I LOOK FOR PARTS.
I DO A LOT OF WELDING AND CUTTING WITH THE GRINDING DISC AND A LOT OF CUTTINGS WITH TORCH.
AND THE WELDING IS THE MOST FUN.
FROM THE FINAL STEP IS TO PUT FINAL COAT OF LACQUER AND TAKE IT DOWN TO THE GALLERY.
THE GRINDING IS STILL ROUGH.
I LOVE CUTTING AND WELDING AND PUTTING STUFF TOGETHER AND I LOVE THE HOT METTLE.
EVEN WHEN IT BURNS ME I DON'T MIND.
I'M WORKING ON A NUMBER OF PROJECTS AND WHAT I WILL SHOW YOU TODAY IS A SERIES CALLED A LYNCH CHAIR AND I HAVE LEARNED A NEW THING ABOUT SPRINGFIELD.
YOU CAN'T REALLY WELL THE.
SO THAT IS THE FINAL STEP ON THIS CHAIR.
IT WILL STILL HAVE MOVEMENT BUT IT WON'T BE IN DANGER OF BREAKING.
MY MOST RECENT COMMISSION ENTERED THIS HEADBOARD ON COMMISSION.
I HAVE ABOUT FOUR PANELS, IT'S PUTTING IT TOGETHER AND CARVING THE LAST THREE OUT OF THE FOUR WOOD PANELS AND FOR SPECULATIVE I DO PEDESTALS, COUNSEL TABLES, AND TABLES, A LOT OF CHEERS.
CHAIRS ARE MY FAVORITE.
SHARES ARE WHERE I THINK THE ART IS IN MY WORK.
I MAKE IT SO PEOPLE ARE VERY TREPIDATIONS WHEN THEY SEE THEM.
WHEN THEY SIT DOWN I CAN SEE FOR INSTANCE EVERYTHING EVAPORATES AND THEY ARE BACK INTO A CHILDLIKE STATE.
IT IS MOVING AND COMFORTABLE.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES.

FOR THE KANOSH 4 OUNCES OF SEMISWEET CHOCOLATE, HALF A CUP OF HEAVY CREAM AND 1/8TH TEASPOONS OF PEPPERMINT EXTRACT AND CRUST CANDY CANES.
OUR EGGS IS THE ROOM TEMPERATURE AND FOR THE KANOSH WE MAKE LATER WE CHOPPED UP OUR CHOCOLATE BAR AND CRUSH OUR CANDY CANES.

THE OTHER PART IS I'M THINKING OF AS A CHILD AND PEOPLE BEING ABLE TO ACCESS, WHICH WAS MY EXPERIENCE.
PUBLIC MEDIA ALLOWS A WINDOW INTO THE WORLD AND IT ALLOWED ME TO SEE THINGS IN CULTURES AND FOOD AND ART AND HISTORY THAT I OTHERWISE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE AS READILY AVAILABLE TO ME AND VERY RURAL NORTH CAROLINA.
I FEEL PART OF OUR MISSION IS TO CONTINUE TO DO THAT IN THIS VERY DIVERSE WORLD WE LIVE IN.
BRING THE CONTENT AND THOSE THINGS TO THE WORLD SO THEY CAN SEE A BROADER PERSPECTIVE.

THAT IS SUCH AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT.

I HAVE SOME HEAVY CREAM IN THIS PUTT AND OVER A LOW FLAME AND WE WANT THIS HEAVY CREAM TO GENTLY SIMMER.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR BUBBLES JUST AROUND THE EDGE.
WE JUST WANT TO WARM IT THROUGH BECAUSE IT'S AND THE GAME IS TO GO INTO THIS DELICIOUS BOWL OF CHOCOLATE.
SO WE ARE GOING TO WARM THAT AND STIRRED AROUND.
IT'S NOT A LOT OF HEAVY CREAM AND REMOVE IT AROUND AND LOOK FOR THOSE LITTLE BUBBLES AROUND THE EDGES.
THE WAITING GAME.

POUR IT ALL OVER AND WE WILL LET IT SIT AND LET THE WARM CREAM MELT THE CHOCOLATE.

IT SHOULD WITH EACH HUNTER PFIESTER SHOULD TURN INTO A CREAMY LUSCIOUS KANOSH.
AND THAT IS ALL IT IS.
THE MELTED CHOCOLATE AND WARM HEAVY CREAM AND WE ADD MORE PEPPERMINT EXTRACT BUT USE IN MODERATION BECAUSE IT CAN SKEW TO TOOTHPASTE VERY QUICKLY.
WE DO NOT WANT THAT.

ABOUT 3/4 OF A TEASPOON IS WHAT THEY SAY.
I WAS JUST, YOU KNOW, PUT A LITTLE BIT IN THERE, IF IT IS TOO MUCH, TOO MUCH DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE, WE WILL COVER THEM WITH CANDY CANES AND IT WILL HIDE ALL OF OUR BLEMISHES AND IT WILL BE DELICIOUS.
