Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipDanny Loy is a barber in Campbellsville and has been cutting hair for more than 50 years.
He says there is an art to it and he has learned a lot over that time.
And now he's able to teach that to his son, Brant, who, after years working in unrelated fields, has begun cutting hair alongside his father.
So take a seat in the barber's chair for this week's look at arts and culture that we call Tapestry.
I've got that barber school, 1968.
So it's been 55 years.
You learn the change of the styles.
The first styles were just sort of just regular haircuts, and you go in the seventies, you go to the middle area where there they have the long hair and you don't take that off because heaven forbid you get too short, you know.
So and then the style changed and now the mullets coming back.
Just a lot of changes over the years, you know, And you see changes even in the fashion and the clothes and stuff over the years.
You see a lot.
I cannot remember a time that I did not have the barber shop in my life.
I was always down here.
I didn't want to stay at home because I got bored.
So it was always just fascinating to me.
So I really cannot remember a time when I wasn't part of the barbershop culture, so to speak.
So it was just kind of like one of those sayings.
Most guys grow up or kids grow up little boys, I would imagine, and want to do what their father does for a living.
So it was kind of one of those natural things that I wanted to do.
And my mom was like, You know, you might want to rethink that.
So I spent several years doing other things and getting other, you know, transferable skills through sales.
Most of my adult life had been in sales, but then I got a little older and I just decided, Neil, if there's ever a time in my life that I'm going to go and cut hair, it needs to be now.
So I went to school, graduated, and luckily my dad took me on.
So, oh, it's kind of crazy.
We have we have some some fun times.
We get up and we laugh and and we just enjoy being.
I've always enjoyed being around him, you know, It's been good.
We enjoyed that and a good time.
Well, you have to have certain tools for certain things.
Every art has their their tools.
They work with artists, have their brushes, and the and barbers have their scissors, their razors and their clippers.
There's just little there's little techniques you learn over the years, you know, that you don't know.
Just getting out of barber school is.
There's a lot of times I've and I've done things and he's like, okay, yeah, but let me show you a little bit of the different technique so that this can help you out.
It'll be easier on you.
It will achieve the same result, maybe even faster.
So there's a lot of things that, you know, 55 years of cutting hair, the experience that he has has helped me out tremendously.
And I'm fortunate to have that kind of, you know, tutor or teacher in my life to to kind of mentor me through those techniques.
And I appreciate that and valued a lot.
These are the they're called actually they're called thinning shears that you mentioned, thinning of people is scares people.
They think you're going to their hair out, but it's actually more blending shears.
One of the things that I like the most about cutting hair is that I like the interaction with the people connecting with people and just the stories that you hear, the relationships that you build.
And I think, you know, in this line of business, you're one of those guys, you're you're a counselor, you're a guy that people can listen to.
And sometimes you give advice, but sometimes you just you just keep quiet and let them get things off their chest and you build a relationship with the people.
How's it going on, Mr. Vaughn?
Good people come in and they have low points in their life.
And I mean, you and you can relate within maybe and talk to them and and they feel better when they leave.
Maybe they look a little better and feel a lot better.
You know.
So I thought that was always cool to how you could by changing their appearance, you could literally change your life.
After Brant joined what had been a one man barber shop for his father for many years, the duo were now in the process of moving to a larger location.
They hope to be open on East Broadway in Campbells ville by the end of next week.
Congrats to them.
