One of the most contentious periods in Virginia history ended the year Charles Alexander walked the steps at Venable Elementary School in Charlottesville. He recalls the events leading to the end of Massive Resistance in 1959 and recounts his experiences as a member of the Charlottesville Twelve, a group of students which integrated two southern white schools more than a year before Ruby Bridges.
