At a time when "The Birth of a Nation" and "The Great Train Robbery" were setting the pace for silent movies, Vermont's Progressive Party came up with the scheme of making a motion picture in Vermont with local actors to raise funds for the Party. In the spring of 1916, the Party's weekly, the "Vermont Advance" ran a contest to choose the cast.
