(upbeat music) - AARP Utah has a driver's safety program offering information on safe driving techniques and navigating dangerous road conditions.
Alan Ormsby is here to tell us more about this important program.
Hi, Alan.
- Hi.
- Thanks for being here.
AARP does so many good things.
- Thanks, Mary.
- Now you're gonna help make better drivers.
- We're gonna do our very best.
(laughing) - So let's talk first about the course itself, and who it's aimed at and what they will learn.
- Yeah, so if you take the AARP Safe Driver course, you can learn a lot of great things about how to be a safer driver, how to be a more cognizant driver of everything that's around you.
It's about a four-hour course, and we need volunteers to help us teach those courses as well.
- Okay, and so to teach the course, what's that training like?
- Yeah, so if you feel like you're a great driver and you wanna share that with other people over the age of 50, that's who we're target targeting primarily, then you just get involved and you go through a training yourself, and then everything's really laid out for the volunteer to just be able to talk through all of those things that make us safer drivers.
You also learn a lot about how newer cars are put together with great safety equipment that a lot of people may not know about.
- Oh, yeah, I tell you, those great new safety features on cars, how did we ever drive without them?
- Right, they're wonderful.
- Yeah.
Yeah, they're probably saving a lot of people.
And how many volunteers you need?
- Well, we could use as many as are willing to come forward.
And we teach these classes all throughout the state.
So if you think that you would be interested in it, don't hesitate to reach out to us.
You can Google AARP volunteers, and you'll find all the information you need about how to become a volunteer.
- Okay, and then people who wanna take the course, do they go to the same website?
- You can go to the website that's on the screen.
I think it's aarpdriversafety.org.
And signing up is really easy, and most people will get a nice discount off of their insurance, as well.
- Oh, that's great.
Okay, well, Alan, thanks for what you do, and thanks for being here.
- Thank you, Mary.
- And if you'd like to know more about the safe driver program from AARP Utah, you can either sign up and be a volunteer or just sign up to go take the program.
Go to aarpdriversafety.org.
That's aarpdriversafety.org.
I'm Mary Dickson.
