Sewer and water main breaks have been wreaking havoc on neighborhoods in Hudson and Essex counties, shutting down streets and limiting access to water for more than 100,000 residents. During some of the hottest days of the year, it’s a problem that’s been a century in the making as the state struggles to update and replace aging infrastructure. In Newark, some pipes predate the Civil War.
