In this episode we combine two great New Mexican artists. (audience cheers) All The music that you hear via laptop is music I produced and I wrote and I did all the instruments, everything.
(audience cheers) So all original music.
Thank you.
(indie music) Burning up out It doesn't really matter as long as I got you Simplified in lights Outside Can't sleep long without You telling me about your Lovely thoughts Out loud, out loud Can you say them out loud Can you say them out loud Teach me how you be Everything that breathes, right now Energetically speaking Can't live long without You holding me closely Foreheads unannounced Out loud, out loud Can I feel you out loud Can I feel you out loud (audience cheers) Can you feel me out loud Can you feel me out loud Can you feel me out loud Thank you.
(audience cheers) Thank you, thank you.
I don't know, I'm pretty excited.
- Yeah.
- I don't think I've done an interview before.
- Really?
You're crushing it.
- Thank you.
We just started.
That's a lie.
I grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo, so that's about an hour and a half north of Albuquerque.
I think I was more confident in myself at 17 than I am now.
Before it was like, I'm Ailani and this is what that means.
And now it's like I'm Ailani and I'm gonna tell you the truth I have no idea what that means.
I think sometimes confidence can disguise yourself a bit and like keep from the truth a bit.
And it's like, well I'm not 17 anymore and I don't think I'm the coolest person in town.
Now I know myself least and I think there's something cool to that.
Don't recall you buying me gifts like this Now I'm getting an idea of like who my fans are.
They like the honesty, they like the heart on the table kind of thing.
And as soon as I sway away from that, I don't like it.
And I notice people don't like it.
I think I waited long enough All my songs come from a place where it's like I'm dealing with something or I'm trying to process it and I have to.
I have to like say something, I have to get it out.
It's kind of funny and it's like oh, my journal is for everybody to read.
It's like they can read my relationship timelines, my self-hatred thoughts.
It's like for open to everybody.
But I think it's kind of cool that way 'cause it's like if I can be that honest, I think a lot of people can too.
And I think we're trained to deny ourselves of everything we think or feel from like a young age.
So it's like any bit I can do to break outta that barrier I think allows other people who are older than me or any age to be like, I can do that too.
(audience applauds) Thank you.
This next song is called "Mortified and it's kind of about my self-hatred and things I deal with with myself and my mental health.
And I think it's always important to talk about it and to be upfront about it sometimes when it's necessary for your own wellbeing.
So this song is like me dealing with that.
I don't know if I dealt with it in the song, but you know, it's me talking about it, at least.
(audience applauds) Go ahead, write me off Terrified by the thought That I'm not good enough to be you Never all that good Trying for years Trying for years Getting better every time Getting better every time But not in my mind Not in my mind I'm such a waste of time Mortified by myself, mortified by myself Mortified by myself, mortified by myself Never satisfied Say the wrong stuff all the time Say the wrong stuff all the time Especially at night Especially at night At least I gave it a try Shoot myself down Shoot myself down Eat myself inside Eat myself inside Tearing apart all the good sides Mortified by myself, mortified by myself Mortified by myself, mortified by myself 'Cause I'm mortified by myself, mortified by myself 'Cause I'm mortified by myself, mortified by myself Such a waste of time Never all that good Eat myself inside Tearing myself down 'Cause I'm mortified by myself, mortified by myself (audience applauds) Air guitar's so much better.
Stank face and everything.
(audience applauds) Thank you Bands of Enchantment for having me.
Thank you.
You're such a great crowd.
Thank you.
(audience cheers) - [Ken] Give it up, get it going for Albuquerque's own, The Kipsies.
(audience cheers) (soft folk music) Time keeps passing by Is it passing me I've been waiting for so long, I'm weary Why is trust a chore Will I ever learn It is getting hard to wait for my turn And just like that, it's over and you are here And all that had been promised Is now made clear And now the wait is over, just in time All this beauty was revealed in His time Looking at you now Time comes a pause I see meaning in the wait And the cause Had I had my way What would life have been Little one, you're worth all that has happened And just like that it's over And you are here And all that had been promised is now made clear And now the waiting s over just in time All this beauty was revealed in His time Ooh Oh oh And on the other side It's easier To look back on all I've learned (audience cheers) (soft folk music continues) (music brightens) And just like that it's over And you are here And all that had been promised is now made clear And now that the waiting's over just in time All this beauty was revealed in His time (audience applauds) So the fun thing about playing with a banjo is they have to tune a lot.
(audience cheers) So not only does Randy have to tune a lot, he likes to play a lot of different banjos.
I'm not a diva, but he might be.
(audience laughs) (drums play) This next song's called "Growth" and I hope you like it.
(soft folk music) Growth is hard But staying is too There's no easy way out of seeing it through It feels so far I'm not even close But all these growing pains are what trouble me most One step forward Two steps back There's no way around it You gotta stay on track And if you do This much I know You can get where you're headed Going steady and slow We are growing But don't grow too fast For the journey You can not skip past So when it feels Like you can't cope And life throws one more thing at you You might lose hope Fix your eyes On things above And don't you let yourself forget you are enough We are growing But don't go too fast For the journey you can not skip past Ooh whoa Ooh oh Ooh oh When it feels like it's too much Take it slowly, slowly, slowly Take a breath and trust And know you are growing, growing, growing We were never promised that this life would be easy going Just remember, through it all You're growing, growing, growing (audience applauds) We are growing But don't go too fast For the journey we can not skip We are growing But don't go too fast For the journey We can not skip past (audience cheers) - I love a good origin story.
Where did it start?
- I think Sean and I are the only original, original people.
We started kind of playing some folky music similar to what we're doing now.
It was a little bit brighter and then I guess we kind of just got darker over time, I don't know.
- Well I think some of the brighter people left.
- Yeah.
- That might be right.
- He has an alter ego.
- And then we ran into them - [Ken] Oh, does the alter ego have a name?
- Randy.
- Randy, okay.
I wanna be still We're playing a few songs off of our latest album.
All stuff that we wrote during the pandemic.
- Yeah.
- So it's like very angsty.
I don't know, can folk Americana be angsty?
- Sure.
- It's really raw life stuff, but always with an aspect of hope.
We got through it.
- Yeah.
- So here we are.
- Yeah.
I wanna be still - I think the thing that I like about folk music is that you just, you cannot be insincere.
A lot of music, you can kind of hide behind a lot of sound and this music forces you to put in a very vulnerable place.
- Yeah.
There's an honesty, there's a rawness, like you can't hide behind it.
- Plus you just wanted an upright bass.
- Also that, yeah.
(all laugh) Can you take me to a place Where I am free to be still and know (audience applauds) We're gonna do one more.
(audience cheers) (folk music) Little bird, oh so dear Tell me, how do you keep yourself from giving into fear And joy is ever near I have tried to live the same Every time I've fail The struggle comes again and takes its claim And I'm left to blame From up high she soars Through wind and the rain Flying on while the elements roar There's no time to focus on the pain Glory awaits (folk music continues) In the Word, here's what shows Put your trust on high Tomorrow will worry on its own He still sits on the throne From up high, she soars Through wind and rain Flying on as the elements roar There's no time to focus on the pain Glory awaits From up high she soars through wind and rain Flying on as the elements roar There's no time to focus on the pain Glory awaits (audience cheers) - [Ken] Have the official Season 3 guitar (rock music) You better not bring No man around my kids (rock music continues)
