WE MET INDIGO AT NARE STUDIO IN OLD TOWN EAST WHERE THEY SHARE THE RITUAL OF THEIR TACTILE WORK.

MY CULTURAL IDENTITIES DON'T SATISFY ME.
IT'S NOT LIKE MY EXPERIENCE CAN BE DEFINED.

I PLAY IN THE DIFFERENT MEDIA AND NAVIGATE MY HOMETOWN OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
ALCHEMY I ALWAYS SAY IS THE SCIENCE MEDICINE HISTORICAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDY TO EXIST.
CROSS CULTURAL.
NO ONE THAT CAN CLAIM THAT PRACTICE.
STATISTICALLY THOSE WHO PRACTICE THIS, FOR MEDICINAL OR ARTISTIC PURPOSES ARE TRYING TO FIND AT THE ROOT WHAT IS THE TRUE FORM OF SOMETHING, BREAK IT DOWN TO DIFFERENT COMPONENTS, PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND EXPERIMENT.
I COME FROM THIS WAY OF IF I NEED TO SPEAK I NEED TO CREATE SOMETHING VISUAL TO UNDERSTAND THE VOCAL TENSION IN MY SPIRIT AND I WRITE AND THAT'S A WAY TO DRAW AND SING AND THAT'S A WAY TO PAINT, AND I'M BRINGING ALL THESE MEDIUMS TOGETHER TO SEE THE SENSATION I'M FEELING BECAUSE IT'S COMPLEX.
ART IS PRETTY SENTIMENTAL TO ME.
MY DAD DID CARTOONS AN HE ALSO SANG A LOT, AND HE WAS MY NURTURER GROWING UP AND WHENEVER I WAS GOING THROUGH SOME SORT OF A REALLY INTENSE EMOTIONAL STATE HE WOULD BRING OUT A SHARPIE, PIECE OF PAPER AND DOODLE AND SAY COLOR IT.
AND SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING, I HAD TO REACT TO BRING THAT TENSION BACK DOWN AND THEN I HAD THIS PIECE OF WHAT FELT LIKE MY OWN UNDERSTANDING OF MY HEAD ON THE PAGE MY DAD OFFERED ME, AND HE ALSO USED TO READ POETRY TO ME AND THAT KIND OF INFORMED MY LANDSCAPE IN MY MIND OF HOW CAN I MAP THE OUT AND HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHEN I'M NOT SURE HOW TO COMMUNICATE.
I'LL LET MY THOUGHTS FLOW WITH INK AND AS THEY'RE KIND OF FLOWING WITH THE INK I'M DOING THAT LAYERING PROCESS BASED ON MY NOTES I ALREADY HAVE EITHER THEY'RE WRITTEN OR DRAWN, AND THEN SEE IF THERE'S SOMETHING I WANT TO WORK ON BASED THESE MORE FLATTENED IMAGES, IF I WANT TO PRINT THEM OR HAVE THEM BE DIGITIZED IN SOME WAY IF I'M USING THEM AS A SYMBOL ON A PIECE.
I WANT TO HEAR A TRUMPET LINE START TO BELLOW.
AND THEN HAVE A PERCUSSION MOMENT.
MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER IS "FRANKENSTEIN."
SHOCKER.
LIKE THAT'S MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER.
FAVORITE MOVIES ARE LIKE THE ALIEN FRANCHISE AND THAT SENSE OF WHAT IS THE BODY IN RELATIONSHIP AND WHAT'S ALIEN AND NORMALIZED AND THAT WAY THEN, MY AUDIENCE IS SOMEONE WANTING TO PLAY WITH THEIR PSYCHE AND SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR OWN BODY ARCHIVE, THOSE WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS THEY JUST NEED TO FIND IT.
IF YOU TAKE THE BASIC THING OF ALCHEMY, START WITH LEAD TO CREATE GOLD I'M TRYING TO CONNECT WITH THOSE TRYING TO FIND THAT MERCURIAL GOLD AND I CAN BE THAT GUIDE ALONG THE WAY.
I'M TRYING TO PUT TOGETHER A SMALL INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING PRESS.
IT'S KIND OF MY LAST-DITCH EFFORT TO TRY TO DO SOMETHING AND BE LIKE I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS, LET ME PUT IT INTO ONE TINY THING FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE AND TAKE WITH THEM.
I HAVE A SENSE OF INTENSE INTIMACY WHEN IT COMES TO MY ARTWORK AND WRITING AND TEACHING IF IT'S HISTORICAL ART HISTORY, ALL THE DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES, AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A MUCH EASIER WAY, QUOTE, UNQUOTE, TO TRY TO HAVE MY SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM AND HAVE IT BE ALSO INDEPENDENT SO THAT I'M NOT TRYING TO WEIGH ON SOMEONE ELSE'S DECISIONS IN ORDER TO HAVE MY WORK BE IN THE WORLD.
SO THE PRESS ITSELF IS A WORD I CAME UP WITH AND THIS IDEA OF REST MOVEMENTS AND ALSO THAT SENSE OF WHAT IS WHO YOU ARE WITHOUT YOUR BODY AND THEN MIA FROM LIKE WHO MY PATRON WHEN IT COMES TO MY ANCESTRY AS WELL AS MAYA IN TERMS OF WHAT IT MEANS TO CUT IN SAN SCRIPT.
CUTTING THROUGH THAT AIR BECOMES THIS WHOLE PROCESS OF INK, PAPER, AND SOME SORT OF EXPRESSION IS ON THE PAGE AND THAT BECOMES THE PRESS.
WHATEVER IS IN THE PRESS WHAT I MAKE IS INFORMED BY WHAT I BRING OUT AT THAT TIME.
I LOVE BEING FROM HERE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, BUT A LOT OF MY KINSHIP ARE LIKE CAN YOU SHARE YOUR WORK TO MORE PEOPLE, AND I DON'T LIKE DOING GALLERIES AND I DON'T LIKE BENDING OR DOING LIKE MARKETS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

I WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED AS AN ANCESTOR IF IT'S STILL A PHYSICAL THING.
I WOULD MUCH RATHER MY PRESS BE THE WAY IN WHICH YOU WOULD ENGAGE WITH SOMEONE, HAVE THE LIVING PRACTICE BE THE INVITATION.

THE MEMBERS LIVE THROUGHOUT NEVADA AND CALIFORNIA, IN CITIES INCLUDING RENO, FRESNO, RIVERSIDE.
WHEN THE MAN KILLERS COME TOGETHER, THEY CELEBRATE FRIENDSHIP, IDENTITY, AND CULTURE THROUGH POWERFUL PERFORMANCE.
>> COLONY A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED NATION HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF RENO AND SPARKS, NEVADA.
WE HAVE ABOUT 1,300 PLUS TRIBAL MEMBERS AND WE REPRESENT OUR MEMBERSHIP IN DESCENDSY.
WE HAVE 28 ACRES DOWNTOWN.
WE ARE LOCATED BETWEEN MILL STREET AND SECOND STREET.
THAT'S THE 28 ACRES.
WE ALSO HAVE 15,000 ACRES IN HUNGRY VALLEY.
MY NAME IS, I MANAGE THE CULTURAL RESOURCE PROGRAM AND TRIBAL OFFICE FOR THE RENO SPARKS COLONY AND THE CO-FOUNDER OF THE ALL NATIVE WOMEN DRUM GROUP THE MAN KILLERS.
THE MAN KILLERS BEGAN AND WERE ESTABLISHED AT HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
WE CAME TOGETHER AS FRIENDS WE DID SING WITH A COED DRUM GROUP.
OTHER MALE SINGERS.
THE HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT DRUM GROUP JUST GET TOGETHER AND SING ON CAMPUS FOR DIFFERENT INDIGENOUS EVENTS.
THERE WAS A GATHERING AT CAPTAIN JACK'S STRONGHOLD AND THE HUMBOLDT STATE STUDENT DRUM WAS THERE AND SEVERAL OF THE WOMEN WERE SINGING TOGETHER, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND SAID, HEY, WE SOUND REALLY GOOD.
>> WE WERE SINGING AND FROM THAT GATHERING IT WAS LIKE, THE WOMEN HAVE SUCH DIFFERENT TONES THAT IT WOULD BE NICE TO GET THE WOMEN TO SING TOGETHER.
>> WE DECIDED TO BECOME A SUPPORT GROUP AND BEGAN MEETING ON THE WEEKENDS AND START DRUMMING ON A BIG DRUM.
THEN WE WERE ASKED TO SING ON CAMPUS FOR AN INDIGENOUS CONFERENCE.
WE DECIDED WELL, LET'S DO THIS LITTLE SONG FOR THIS INDIGENOUS CONFERENCE, BUT WE NEED A NAME.
>> SOMEBODY HAD YELLED OUT WHAT ABOUT THE MAN KILLERS?
THAT NAME IS A STRONG NAME IN THE CHEROKEE NATION, NAME FROM WILMA MAN KILLER, A GREAT ROLE MODEL.
SHE WAS THE PRINCIPAL CHIEF OF HER CHEROKEE NATION IN THE '80s AND '90s.
SHE WAS AN ACTIVIST, EDUCATOR, BROUGHT A LOT OF GOOD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO THE CHEROKEE NATION AND WE DECIDED TO LET'S GO WITH LET'S BE THE MAN KILLERS.
WE KNEW WE NEEDED TO ASK PERMISSION.
WE SENT A LETTER TO WILMA MAN KILLER, LET HER KNOW WHO WE ALL WERE AND AFTER HER LEAVING THIS WORLD, HER NEPHEW APPROACHED US AND TOLD US HOW THEY APPROVED THAT NAME.
SO OUR UNDERSTANDING IS THAT SHE TOOK OUR LETTER TO ALL THE HEAD MEN OF THE CHEROKEE NATION AND THEY PASSED OUR LETTER AROUND AND GAVE US PERMISSION.
HENCE THE MAN KILLERS.
THE MAN KILLERS ENCOMPASS MANY TRIBAL NATIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.
>> I AM FROM THE VILLAGE OF PUEBLO AND THE RUNNING PEOPLE.
I AM -- MY TRIBE IS FROM THE ARIZONA AREA TUCSON.
>> I AM CHEROKEE AND MESS KOGI CREEK AND TUNICA.
>> MY FATHER'S PEOPLE ARE --AND MY MOTHER'S PEOPLE ARE DEATH VALLEY SHOSHONI.
WHEN YOU SEE AND HEAR US YOU WILL KNOW AND UNDERSTAND WHO WE ARE.
AFTER WE STARTED OUR FIRST CONFERENCE AND DID OUR FIRST PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC, WE DECIDED LET'S START LEARNING SONGS AND LET'S START GOING TO POW-WOWS.
ONE OF OUR SONGS IS CALLED THE GATHERING SONG, AND IT WAS GIVEN TO US BY JERMAINE TREMMEL.
>> USUALLY SONGS CAME TO US BY OTHER DRUM GROUPS THAT SUPPORTED US.
>> OR WE WOULD ASK PERMISSION IN THE RIGHT WAY, ASK WITH AN OFFERING, FROM OTHER DRUM GROUPS AND THEY WOULD GIVE US PERMISSION AND THEN WE STARTED LEARNING OUR OWN SONGS OR CATCHING OUR OWN SONGS.
>> THE MEN KILLER WOMEN WOULD COME UP WITH SONGS OR HEAR SONGS, SONGS IN NATURE OR WOULD HEAR SONGS IN DREAMS.
>> WE STARTED SONGWRITING AND DREAMING AND, YOU KNOW, BEGAN CATCHING SONGS AND THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL PROCESS.
YOU'RE JUST LIVING YOUR LIFE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN A BEAUTIFUL -- >> YEAH.
>> MELODY COMES TO YOU AND YOU TRY TO CATCH IT, AS YOU WOULD LIKE A POET OR A WRITER.
>> WE HAVE A SISTERHOOD WITH THE DRUM GROUP, SO IT MAKES US STRONGER AS WOMEN FOR OURSELVES.
WE NEED THAT, THAT HEALING, AS WOMEN, AS MOMS, AS AUNTIES, AS GRANDMAS, AS COUSINS, YOU KNOW, THAT WOMEN'S SPIRITUALITY IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
AND THAT CONNECTS US.
YOU KNOW, I LOST MY SISTER A LONG TIME AGO, AND THE DRUM HELPED ME HEAL SO I CAN SAY THAT IT HELPS ME FIND SISTERS.
>> I DON'T HAVE ANY SISTERS, BUT I DO HERE.
AND THAT'S A WONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL, FULFILLING THING FOR ME, JUST THAT ENERGY THAT BOND THAT -- OF OTHER WOMEN AND, YOU KNOW, I DIDN'T HAVE THAT GROWING UP, SO IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL THING TO GET AS A GIFT WHEN I WAS 18 AND IT'S JUST NEVER LEFT ME.
I THINK THE DRUM REFILLS US.
>> YES.
>> AND SUSTENANCE.
>> NURTURES.
AND AGAIN LOVE AND PROTECTS AND, YOU KNOW, JUST LIKE THE SISTER OF THAT DRUM IS THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MOTHER.
WE COME BACK TO MOTHER WHEN WE COME BACK TO SING.
>> EXCITING FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO SING WITH THE WOMEN BECAUSE OF THE VOICES THAT WE HAVE, THE DIFFERENT TONES.
THERE WAS ONE COMMENT ONE TIME THAT A MALE DRUM GROUP MEMBER SAID, OH, YOU KNOW, YOU ALMOST SOUND AS GOOD AS THE MEN DRUM GROUPS, WELL, THAT'S NOT WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO.
WE HAVE OUR OWN VOICE.
WE HAVE OUR OWN TONES.
WE'RE NOT HERE TO COMPETE WITH THE MEN.
WE HAVE OUR OWN WAY OF SINGING AND IT'S JUST A BEAUTIFUL THING.
>> WHEN WE FIRST STARTED OUT IT WAS A BIG DEAL.
>> IT WAS A BIG DEAL.
>> VERY CONTROVERSIAL.
MEN CAN ONLY SIT AT THE DRUM AND THAT'S SPECIFICALLY TO CERTAIN TRIBAL TRADITIONS, AND THEN AFTER A WHILE, PEOPLE BECAME ACCUSTOMED TO US AS A GROUP.
>> WE HAVE A LOT OF STORIES WHERE PEOPLE AT FIRST CAME TO BE UPSET WITH US, AND THEN THEY CHANGED THEIR TUNE.
>>> FOR 35 YEARS, WHAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH, THERE'S BEEN REALLY GREAT, GOOD, AND SOME OBSTACLES THAT WE HAD TO GO THROUGH TO BECOME WHO WE ARE, BUT I THINK ONCE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD WHO WE WERE AS INDIVIDUALS, AS WOMEN IN OUR JOBS, WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND THE TYPE OF WORK WE'VE DONE, I THINK THAT THAT HAS CHANGED AND WE'RE MORE ACCEPTED.
I'M REALLY PROUD OF NEVADA AND MY RELATIVES AT NEVADA FOR BEING SO SUPPORTIVE AND EMBRACING THE MAN KILLERS.
