And tonight's film is The 39 Steps from 1935.

Also tonight, I am joined by Adrian Quinn.

Adrian, we appreciate that you're down here in the basement with us.

So why don't you give people just a little bit of an idea what you're doing when you're not down here in the basement?

Sure, Kris.

Well, I have been working here at PBS Fort Wayne in master control since 2004, so on and off for 18 years.

I the life is basically my wife, my kids, and Fort Wayne Komets.

Fort Wayne Komets.

You can't go wrong with that.

So now part of this movie takes place in Scotland, and since I can't do a Scottish accent at all, we thought Adrian would be great to be on the show.

So just tell us a little bit about Scotland.

You were born there right?

Correct.

I was born in Fife, which is in between Edinburgh and St Andrew's.

I came over here in 1998.

Been here ever since.

Became a citizen in 2017.

I'd say Scotland was a lot like this movie.

It's kind of moody.

It's romantic.

There's a lot of history.

So talking about the movie, why don't we get started with tonight's film?

Let's do it.

So tonight's film is The 39 Steps .

Now, this British spy thriller was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and features Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

So Canadian citizen Richard Hannay played here by Robert Donat is at a London music hall.

While watching a vaudeville style show, gunshots are fired.

In the ensuing panic, a frightened Annabella Smith holds on to Richard and talks him into taking her back to his flat.

After the bus ride there, she admits that she is a counter spy and that she fired the shots to cause confusion because she's being chased by assassins.

She tells Richard about a plot to steal British military secrets and that she needs to go to Scotland.

Later that night, Annabella is stabbed in the back.

However, before she dies, she manages to tell Richard that he needs to flee.

So Richard hops on a train to Scotland and then things start to get really interesting.

So, Adrian, what do you know about this movie?

Well, for starters, Orson Welles referred to this Hitchcock classic as a masterpiece.

So that's got to be good, right?

It does.

This Hitchcock film is also one of the several that features an innocent man being forced to go on the run.

So we've seen that premise in The Lodger, Saboteur, and North by Northwest .

This movie also contains a signature Hitchcock cameo.

About 7 minutes into this film, both Hitchcock and screenwriter Charles Bennett can be seen walking past the bus that Robert Donat and Lucy Manheim bought outside the music hall.

So keep an eye out for that.

This film was very well-received at the time and was what was voted best British film of 1935.

So, Kris, I think we should get started.

Well, I'm ready to see how this thing plays out, so we should probably get out the popcorn, pour some drinks and settle in for a night at the movies with The 39 Steps starring Robert tonight and Madeleine.

There were two men there who wanted to kill me.

Beautiful, mysterious woman, pursued by gunmen.

Sounds like a spy story.

>> That's exactly what it is.

Only I prefer the word agent better.

We'll let that go.

Now I suppose you've come over here to dig up some great, big state secret.

>> No, I am here to save a secret from being divulged.

A very important secret for this country.

Not because I love England, but because it will pay me better that way.

>> Richard: Thank you.

>> You see, a very brilliant agent of a certain foreign power is on the point of obtaining a secret vital to your air defense.

I tracked two of his men to that music hall.

Unfortunately they recognized me.

That's why they're after me now.

>> That was too bad.

You ever heard of a thing called persecution mania?

>> You don't believe me?

>> Frankly, I don't.

>> Go and look down into the street there.

>> You win.

>> Are they there?

>> Yes.

>> I hoped they'd change their minds.

Listen, I'm going to tell you something which is not very healthy to know.

But now that they have followed me here, you are in it as much as I am.

>> How do you mean?

>> Have you ever heard of the 39 Steps?

>> No, what's that?

>> Never mind.

But what you were laughing at just now is true.

These men will stick at nothing.

I'm the only person who can stop them.

If they're not stopped it's only a matter of days, perhaps hours, before the secret is out of the country.

>> Well, why don't you phone the police or something?

>> 'Cause they wouldn't believe me any more than you did.

And if they did, how long do you think it would take to get them going?

These men act quickly.

You don't know how clever their chief is.

Clever and ruthless.

>> Who is he?

What's his name?

>> He has a dozen names.

He can look like a hundred people.

But one thing he cannot disguise.

This part of his little finger is missing.

So if ever you should meet a man with no top joint there, be very careful, my friend.
