We have a garden at the zoo to help supplement our animals diets.
Hi, my name is Allison Pribnow.
Now I'm the horticulture coordinator at the Lake Superior Zoo, and we're going to look at the garden today.
So this year we're growing a lot of squash that's in most of our animals diets.
We're growing tomatoes.
Tomatoes.
Those have been a big hit over the summer this year.
And we've got carrots, greens.
We have a couple cherry trees that we planted.
And so I started as just a manager in the GE department.
My director saw that I have an affinity for plants.
It started with selling house plants in the gift shop, and it's kind of morphed into this.
I became a master gardener through the zoo.
So they helped with that professional development.
I started to coordinate with the keepers to, kind of plan what veggies they want.
The bears really love tomatoes, for example.
Right?
We went to the zoo every year.
There's pictures of me in Halloween costumes from birth.
Pretty much.
I also participated in our Zoo Crew program, which is a pre-teen program.
So I've been at the zoo pretty much forever.
I've had firsthand accounts from some zookeepers that, some colobus monkeys prefer my kale over what we get.
And, our orders.
So that's really, It's satisfying.
It's really fulfilling.
