‘We’re still at the beginning of understanding what BA.2 is going to be like’

The omicron “stealth” BA.2 subvariant — a distant, highly-mutated cousin of the now-dominant omicron strain of the coronavirus -- is now lurking in noses across 47 states. And new lab studies show it’s 30% to 50% more contagious than omicron. According to CDC estimates, BA.2 generated 4% of American COVID-19 infections as of last week, and 6% in the New Jersey/New York region.
