Washington State has moved to protect reproductive rights by purchasing 30,000 doses of the abortion medication known as mifepristone.
Governor Inslee said state officials are bracing for a Texas court ruling that could add extra limits to abortion nationwide.
Officials estimate they have a four-year supply, based on current numbers.
The drug is one of two that can be taken together for a medical abortion.
The University of Washington also purchased 10,000 doses.
Inslee described the recent effort as a way to stop anti-abortion advocates from taking away rights.
The state acquired the doses for nearly $1.3 million through the State Department of Corrections.
Lawmakers are introducing a bill in the legislature to authorize state officials to distribute the medication to providers and healthcare facilities.
