Washington State could be closer to banning the sale or transfer of assault style semi-automatic rifles.
Senate Democrats led an effort to impose stricter gun regulations to curb the devastating rise in mass shootings and gun violence across the nation.
The Senate approved House Bill 1240 as one of three key firearm proposals advancing this year.
Republican lawmakers have been against most new gun regulations, citing a violation of the firearms clauses of the US and State constitution and call HB 1240 too broad.
The bill prohibits the distribution, importation, manufacture or sale of AR-style assault rifles.
According to the legislative analysis, that includes AR15's and AK47's.
The bill is heading back to the house after being amended for one more vote, where it's expected to pass again, then off to Governor Inslee's desk for a signature to become law.
