Even before 2020, youth mental health was a concern, the pandemic only made things worse.
According to a US Surgeon General report, depression and anxiety symptoms have doubled among youth worldwide.
That strain also manifests at school.
Reports of behavioral issues and violence are rising.
And the demand for professional help is overwhelming the system set up to care for young people.
In this season of This Changes Everything, host Sara Bernard talks with educators like Joan King who say the stress isn't over for students.
- [Joan] Students are incredibly stressed out because they are not used to being in a building after being online for a year and a half.
- [Starla] The crisis even spurred Washington state lawmakers to pass legislation requiring all districts to develop a comprehensive counseling plan by Fall 2022.
