Five Washington organizations who support mothers of color recently received a state grant to address an alarming trend of disproportionately high rates of maternal deaths in the most vulnerable communities.
Troubling state mortality rates existed prior to the pandemic.
According to a report on maternal deaths, from 2014 to 2020 pregnancy-associated deaths in the state were more than eight times higher for American Indian and Alaskan Native women than for white women.
New CDC numbers are even more bleak for BIPOC communities.
Maternal mortality rates rose by more than a third between 2020 and 2021, with disparities growing between white and Black mothers.
Racism, discriminatory healthcare factors, and other morbidities are linked to BIPOC maternal deaths.
According to health experts, most of these deaths in the US are preventable.
