I'm Natalie Riemer.

I am the Curator of Terrestrial Animals here at the aquarium.

And today we are going to be checking out Saphira.

She is the new 13 year old bald eagle.

She did have a broken wing that was not able to be fixed.

She wouldn't be able to be released back to the wild, because she would not be able to be successful or be able to survive.

She ended up at the Brandywine Zoo in Delaware.

When we lost our resident bald eagle last fall, we knew that we wanted to get another bald eagle here at the aquarium.

Brandywine Zoo actually thought that maybe we had a really good fit for their eagle.

We have an exhibit that currently has a turkey vulture.

She sounded like she was used to having roommates that are not bald eagles.

And that's one thing that we were really looking for specifically.

Eagles are pretty hardy in this weather because they live here all year round.

She doesn't require a lot of maintenance, unlike the turkey vulture.

When it gets starts getting colder, we do need to turn on those heat lamps for him.

This is our only indoor outdoor exhibit at Great Lakes Aquarium and it's one of my favorite exhibits because it really gives us an opportunity to provide all of these things that these animals need to be out in the weather.

They can feel the sun, they can feel the wind, they can feel the rain and the snow.

It just is so amazing that we can provide that in an indoor facility.

We love being able to exhibit a bald eagle because they are a huge fishing bird.

It just gives us a really great opportunity to educate guests about these animals that maybe they don't get to see up close super often.

We are having an Eagle welcoming event on October 4th.

It's going to be from about 10 to 3.

It's going to be a really fun day just celebrating the arrival of this beautiful bird.
