FOR OVER 40 YEARS, ADVOCACY AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES INCORPORATED HAS BEEN SERVING ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES ACROSS OHIO.
UNTIL RECENTLY THEY WERE LOCATED IN A FORGETTABLE BUILDING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF COLUMBUS.
ON THE HELP OF ARTISTS THIS IS NO LONGER TRUE.
A COLORFUL MURAL CAME TO FRUITION.
I'M LANEY SWARNER.
WE ARE WORKING ON OUR PROJECT.
IT WILL BE A LARGE SKATE INSULATION THAT WE ARE PAINTING ON THE WALLS THAT FEATURES BIRDS THAT ARE LOCAL TO THE AREA AS WELL AS DIFFERENT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT THAT WE COLLECTED UP FROM DIFFERENT PEOPLE, BOTH IN OUR STUDIO AND WHERE APSI SERVES IN THE WORK AS WELL.
THERE PROJECT MEANS A LOT TO MYSELF PERSONALLY AND ALL OF OUR INDIVIDUALS AT THE STUDIO T. IS GREAT WHEN WE CAN TAKE OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE ART WITH THE COMMUNITY I THINK IT IS AMAZING THIS WILL BE A PIECE THAT WILL BE ON A HUGE BUILDING IN COLUMBUS.
ONE THING THAT I REALLY WANT TO STRESS ABOUT INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IS THAT WE ARE STILL PEOPLE.
WE HAVE OPINIONS, WE HAVE A VOICE.
WE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES.
IT JUST MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT MORE LEFT FIELD OR RIGHT FIELD THAN WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE USED TO.
ASPI, IT IS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY.
I THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LETTING US HERE AT THE STUDIO ARE BE A PART OF THERE.
FOR LETTING ME BE A PART OF THIS.
WE ARE JUST STARTING BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT WHEN IT IS FINISHED.
>> WHEN I STARTED HERE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I CAME AS A FILE CLERK.
I REMEMBER THINKING WHETHER I GOT TO THIS BUILDING FOR THE FIRST TIME, HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THIS HERE?
AND, THAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A PRETTY COMMON EXPERIENCE FOR THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE.
THAT SOMEHOW WE JUST GET OVERLOOKED.
THAT OFTENTIMES THE WORK THAT GOES INTO IT, THE BEAUTY OF THEIR LIVES, THEIR STRUGGLES, THAT IS IS ALSO OVERLOOKED.
SO, THINKING ABOUT THAT, HOW WE CAN COMBAT THE LACK OF AWARENESS, HOW MUCH WE ARE SEEING AS OPPOSED TO NOT SEEING, LED ME TO THINK THAT PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE.
AND, IT OCCURRED TO ME WHAT BETTER WAY TO HELP THEM SEE THE BIG PICTURE THAN WITH A BIG PICTURE.
WE NEED TO PUT A PICTURE UP THERE THAT TELLS THE STORY OF THE COMMUNITY AND I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANYONE BETTER TO EXPLAIN THAT, TO BRING THAT TO THE FOREFRONT OF PEOPLE'S MINDS THAN THE D. D. COMMUNITY.
WE KNOW THE STORY DOES NOT BEGIN AND END HERE.
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER AND IT IS MANY VOICES AND HANDS AS WE CAN GET ON THIS MAKES IT THAT MUCH MORE OF AN AUTHENTIC REPRESENTATION.
>> I LIKE WORKING ON IT BECAUSE I GET TO DISPLAY MY ART TALENTS, BASICALLY, AS MY INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AS AUTISTIC AND ADHD PERSON.

THE BROAD & HIGH TEAM MET WITH HER AT HER STUDIO TO TALK ABOUT HER ART PRACTICE AND THE ROLE IT PLAYS IN HER EVERYDAY LIFE.
>> MOST OF MY ART COMES FROM LIFE EXPERIENCES.
AND I AM A HOPE WILL LITTLE ROMANTIC TO BEGIN WITH, MOST OF IT IS FROM THAT EXPERIENCE.
AND THEN MY GRANDMA GOT ME STARTED.
SHE NOTICED WITH THE COLORING, THAT WHEN I COLORED WITH CRAYONS AND STUFF THAT I WAS PARTICULAR ON HOW I DID THINGS, SHE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID YOU ARE SPECIAL BUT YOU ARE A UNIQUE KIND OF SPECIAL.
I CALL MYSELF A RAINBOW UNICORN.
MY GRANDMA SAYS ALWAYS KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND AN OPEN OPINION ON EVERYTHING.
I LIVED BY THAT MODEL.
IF YOU ARE NOT LEARNING SOMETHING EACH DAY IT IS NOT WORTH LIVING FOR.
IT ALSO REMINDS ME OF MY GRANDMA WHEN WE WERE LITTLE WHEN SHE WOULD PUSH ME TO DO CERTAIN ARTWORK THAT SHE WOULD LIKE AND THEN SHE WOULD SAY TRY THIS, MAYBE YOU WILL LIKE IT TOO.
SO, I ACTUALLY TRIED TO MAKE HER A QUILT BUT I NEVER FINISHED IT BEFORE SHE DIED.
SO, I KEEP THAT QUILT IN A TRUNK TO REMIND ME OF WHAT WE STARTED TOGETHER.
MY LIFE WITHOUT ART WOULD BE CHAOTIC AND MISERABLE.
BASICALLY.
BECAUSE IT GROUNDS ME.
SINCE I WAS ABOUT 5 WE FOUND OUT I ENJOYED ART AND THAT I AM VERY ARTISTIC.
ALSO WITH MY DIAGNOSE OF AUTISM AND ADHD IT HELPS MELLOW ME OUT BETTER WHETHER I CAN GET THINGS OUT OF HERE ON TO PAPER.
JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DISABILITY IT DOES NOT STOP YOU FROM BEING A NORMAL PERSON.
I FEEL LIKE NOBODY IS NORMAL.
WE ARE ALL MESSED UP IN OUR OWN UNIQUE WAY.
SO, WHEN I MEET NEW PEOPLE I AM LIKE, OKAY, YOU LOOK NORMAL BUT COULD YOU HAVE A DISABILITY THAT NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT?
>> THE ONE THAT I DID FOR APSI, DON'T LET YOUR DISABILITY DEFINE YOU, IT WAS ONE THAT I THINK WAS BASICALLY TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT YOU CAN BE A UNIQUE PERSON BUT ALSO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF BECAUSE YOU GOT NOTHING TO PROVE TO ANYBODY ELSE BUT YOURSELF.
AT THE END OF THE DAY.
BASICALLY YOU ARE FIGHTING WITH YOUR OWN INNER DEMONS TO PROVE TO YOU AND THEN YOU WILL PROVE TO EVERYBODY ELSE.
BECAUSE WITH ME IT IS JUST WITH ME, I LITERALLY FIGHT WITH MY INNER DEMONS AND SAY IF I CAN JUST PROVE TO MYSELF THEN EVERYBODY ELSE WILL KNOW I AM CAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING THAT I SET MY MIND TO.
IT FELT LIKE MY CHAPTER OF GUARDIANSHIP WAS COMPLETE AND THAT I LEFT MY STAMP ON THE WORLD.
SO LONG AFTER I AM GONE THERE WILL BE A LITTLE PIECE OF ME LEFT OVER.

THIS COMBINATION WITH HEAVY SUBJECTS MATTER THAT DRAW YOUR ATTENTION AND GETS YOU TO CONNECT WITH HIS WORK.
THEY ARE STUNNING, MAJESTIC AND MOVING.
>> IT FEELS LIKE SUCH A BOX TO BE IN.
YOU DOUGH, TO SAY THAT I MAKE WORK ABOUT ARAB CULTURE AND LIFE AND WAR.
>> YOU KNOW, GENERALLY MY WORK IS ABOUT MYSELF IN CERTAIN ASPECTS.
WHEN THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR STARTED I STARTED DOING WORK ABOUT THAT SUBJECT MATTER BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE MY FAMILY IS FROM AND THAT IS WHAT COUNTRY I CONSIDER TO BE MY OTHER HOME.
NOW, MY WORK REVOLVES AROUND CHILDREN A LOT BECAUSE I AM A FATHER AND I UNDERSTAND THE IDEAL, HOW MUCH CARE IT TAKES TO RAISING A KID AND HOW MUCH LOVE IS GIVEN.
WHEN I SEE THESE IMAGES I, I SEE THEM AS A FATHER.
AND I AM HOPING MY VIEWERS SEE THEM AS PARENTS THEMSELVES.
THESE DESIGNS ARE KNOWN AS MOROCCAN DESIGNS, BUT THEY DATE TO, YOU KNOW, ALL OF THOSE DESIGNS ACTUALLY DATE TO THE BABYLON ERA.
I PUT THE DESIGNS ON TOP OF THAT.
I PAINT THE BUILDING THAT IS WAR TORN, SOMEBODY'S HOME, A FAMILY'S HOME.
BUT, THE THING IS, IS THAT, EVEN THOUGH YOU SEE IT IN THE FRONT RIGHT NOW.
ONCE I REMOVE ALL OF THIS TAPE THAT DESIGN WILL SHOW THROUGH AND SO THAT BUILDING WILL BE HIDDEN MORE.
AND SO YOU ALMOST HAVE TO GO THROUGH THESE, THESE LAYERS TO SEE WHAT IS BEHIND.
THAT IS THE LOSS OF LAND AND THE LOSS OF HOMES.
I WAS THERE IN SYRIA IN 1999, THAT WAS THE LAST TIME, I WAS A STUDENT AT THE TIME.
I WAS LOOKING AT BUILDINGS, I WAS LOOKING AT FURNITURE, STRUCTURES.
I REALLY STARTED TO NOTICE THE ART IN THE DESIGN.
THE DESIGN IN PARTICULAR THAT I WOULD SEE ON INSTRUMENTS AND JEWELRY BOXES AND BUILDINGS AND FURNITURE AND EVERYTHING.
I ALSO SORT OF LIKE, YOU KNOW, WAS WOWED BY IT.
BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR STARTED MY MOM WAS THERE AND WE ARE CHRISTIAN ARABS.
MY MOM BROUGHT THIS FRAMED PICTURE OF WHITE JESUS, WHICH I FIND FUNNY.
SO WHEN SHE BROUGHT THAT TO ME SHE WANTED THAT TO BE IN MY DAUGHTER'S ROOM.
SOME YEARS AFTER I WAS PUTTING MY DAUGHTERS TO BED AND I WAS TURNING OFF THE LIGHT AND THAT FRAME IN THE ROOM CAUGHT MY EYE.
AND I CLOSED THE DOOR AND I THOUGHT ABOUT IT AND THEN I WENT BACK IN THEIR ROOM AND TOOK IT OFF OF THE WALL AND STARTED TO DRAW ON TOP OF IT, ABOVE WHAT WE WERE SEEING OR WHAT I WAS SEEING HAPPENING IN SYRIA.
AND, IT WAS SORT OF LIKE A MOMENT THAT JUST, JUST CLICKED.
I THINK I WAS USING THESE FRAMED DESIGNS, I WAS TRYING TO FRAME EVERYTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING OR HOW I WAS SEEING IT HAPPEN.
I REALLY TAKE PRIDE IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO IN HERE.
MY WORK HAS DEFINITELY EVOLVED, ITS AN EVOLUTION, I AM CONSTANTLY MAKING SURE THAT THE WORK LOOKS DIFFERENT FROM PRIOR YEARS.
SOMETIMES IT CAN BE JUST SLIGHT DIFFERENCES OR SOMETIMES IT WILL BE DRASTIC.
AT FIRST I LEFT THE FIGURES FACE BLANK FOR THE REASON, I REALLY WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE THEMSELVES IN THOSE FIGURES, YOU KNOW, LOOKING AT HOW THAT MOTHER CARED FOR THEIR CHILD, THAT DESPERATION TO DO WHATEVER THEY CAN FOR THEIR CHILD.
IF YOU GO TO THE CENTER YOU WILL SEE A LARGE PAINTING OF MINE, IF YOU LOOK AT THAT PIECE YOU CAN SEE THAT WHERE IT DEPICTS THE SAME FAMILY IN BOTH PAINTINGS, THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS MISSING OF EACH FAMILY MEMBER FROM ONE PAINTING TO THE OTHER.
AND THERE WAS THIS ONE FIGURE IN ONE OF THE PAINTINGS, A MOTHER HOLDING HER BABY.
AND THAT BABY, I JUST COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT DESIGN I WANTED TO USE ON THAT CHILD.
NOTHING WAS COMING.
I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE ENDING.
IT DID NOT FIT.
I REALIZE NOW THAT I WAS TELLING MYSELF SUBCONSCIOUSLY NOTHING FITS.
YOU HAVE TO PAINT THAT CHILD.
SO, WHEN YOU SEE THAT PAINTING NOW YOU LOOK AT THAT ONE CHILD WHO IS PAINTED REALISTICALLY AND YOU LOOK AT THE FAMILY HE IS SURROUNDED BY AND I THINK YOU CAN ASK THE QUESTION, WHO MADE IT, FORCES THE VIEWER TO ASK WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT CHILD OR WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT FAMILY.
>> YOU KNOW, I DON'T CONSIDER MYSELF A MURALIST.
I CONSIDER MYSELF MORE AS A STUDIO ARTIST.
BUT I LIKE TO DABBLE.
THE FIRST ONE THAT I DID WAS IN BLACK ALLEY.
IT WAS DEDICATED TO MY MOM.
AND THEN, LAST YEAR, I GOT THESE MESSAGES THAT PEOPLE WERE ASKING ME, YOU KNOW, WHY THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO SEE IT OR WHERE, OR IF IT WAS MOVED, WHICH DOES NOT MAKE SENSE, YOU CAN NOT MOVE A MURAL.
I GOT ENOUGH OF THE MESSAGES TO GO AND CHECK OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON MYSELF.
AND I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO SEE THAT IT WAS FENCED OFF.
AND ALL OF THE GARBAGE CANISTERS WERE PUT IN THE AREA WHERE MY MURAL WAS.
I GOT UPSET.
IT LOOKED BAD.
IT LOOKED BAD FOR MILWAUKEE.
IT LOOKED BAD FOR THE EAST SIDE.
AND SO I APPROACHED THE EAST SIDE BID ABOUT REMOVING THE FENCING AND REMOVING THE DUMPSTERS AND THEY TRIED TO BUT THE BUSINESSES WERE NOT WILLING TO DO IT TO WORK WITH HIM.
SO, HE KIND OF CAME BACK TO ME AND SAID, YOU KNOW, WE ARE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO GET YOU TO PAINT ANOTHER ONE.
YOU KNOW, I WAS HAPPY TO PAINT ANOTHER ONE BUT, YOU KNOW, I WAS DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THAT ONE HAD SUCH A CONNECTION WITH THE COMMUNITY.
SO, I TOLD HIM THAT BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT I CAN DO AS A MURALIST NOW, I TOLD HIM THAT I AM GOING TO MAKE SOMETHING EVEN BOLDER OF A STATEMENT WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON.
WE'RE NEARLY TWO YEARS INTO EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING IN GAZA.
I HAVE SEEN WAY TOO MANY DEAD CHILDREN, READ ABOUT TOO MANY FAMILIES BEING SEPARATED.
THERE IS JUST NO WAY I CAN BE QUIET.
