Art Provenance
Clip: Special | 6m 10sVideo has Closed Captions
What is art provenance? It's tracing the history of an art piece through its lifetime.
When we see a work of art in a museum, we don’t pause to consider how that artwork was acquired. In fact, works of art have a whole life from the time they’re created until they come into an institution’s possession. Victoria Reed, Senior Curator of Provenance at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, talks about her work as an “art detective,” and a painting that Hitler was desperate to call his own.
