(bright music) - The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation presents a solo concert by gold medalist Arthur Greene.
Kary Billings offers a glimpse into this unforgettable evening of music.
Hi, Kary.
Thank you so much for being here.
So let's see, this is your 50th anniversary celebration.
Amazing.
- It's an exciting celebration.
50 years, here we are.
We began in 76, and now, 50 years later, we're known worldwide for bringing the best and the most talented music to Utah and recognizing amazing talent.
- That's right, and to recognize some of that amazing talent, you are bringing back a lot of the laureates, past gold medalist winner.
- Correct, this entire entire season is all medalists and laureates of our 50 years, so our next medalist performer is Arthur Greene.
He won the gold medal in 1978, which is early in our history, but even then, we were international.
Many countries represented, already becoming widely acclaimed as a major event.
- Well, and it's amazing the caliber of musicians out there, it just keeps going up, up, up.
- We're constantly amazed.
We find younger and younger pianists playing the same music, the same rep, as the adults, and sometimes almost better.
(both laughing) - So tell us a little more about Arthur.
Where is he now?
What's he doing?
- Yeah, so Arthur, since winning, has gone on to great acclaim.
He's a professor at the University of Michigan, has many prize-winning students, is known as a teacher and performer, and he has a lot of respect for, let's say, the great masters of the repertoire, so his program is Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, all the great masters, including one of my favorite pieces, Chopin's "Funeral March" sonata.
- Oh, wow.
So Arthur Greene, all these years later, coming back, and who are some of the others who will be coming?
- This spring, we have Mackenzie Melemed, who is one of our earlier laureates of the youth competition, and he has an Americana concert.
All-American composers, a beautiful theme with great favorites and some surprises, and then in the spring, we have a fun combination, husband and wife team, a Bachauer gold medalist, and his wife is a Cliburn medalist together.
- Oh, wow.
Wonderful.
Well, it's great he's coming and that you're doing this, so you thank you for being here.
