Growing the future, leading the world.
IMANI GRACE: My name is Imani Grace.
I am originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and I've lived in the D.C. area for a little over a decade now.
I would describe myself as a Black American artist.
I define Jazz as a resource for the marginalized to express, emote, and contemplate what has been and what is to come.
Theories that are known and unknown.
And it's an exploratory music that allows people to break the boundaries with colors and textures that create new ones.
It's hard for me to really say what jazz is because, as a genre, it's an ever-evolving thing, uh, from its inception.
It was never what it is.
It's, it was always what it's trying to be and what it's going towards.
So I, I grew up in a very proud household of people who, um, understood the importance of instilling values into a child that would last a lifetime.
And my mother has done a great job making sure I knew exactly who I was, especially since growing up, I primarily went to school.
My education always took place in a very suburban, predominantly White areas.
And, um, my church, though, was always in the city.
Um, so going, going back and forth between my, my traditionally Black Baptist church and my usually very White school was a dichotomy that kind of was almost daunting at times.
And so the opportunity to go to an HBCU came up, um, knowing some people who were at Howard and, and then finding out why it is so important to have a village and why it's so important to have mentors and advisors and teachers who understand you a little bit beyond the surface.
As much music as I had heard growing up all my life, I didn't understand the difference between genres.
It's just, it just all sounded like music.
And so getting a chance to sit with... Y'all make some noise for John Roberts... People who studied the voice on a pedagogy level and on a performance level like Connaitre Miller, like Kehembe Eichelberger, like, uh, Dr. Norris, uh, was a gift that I could never replace and will forever cherish.
I encourage any and all young people of color to go to an HBCU.
That experience is like no other on the bandstand with me is a trio of dear-hearted people that I all love individually.
On piano is Terrence Cunningham, who is, uh, just a chef's kiss of, of a vocalist, but then is equally a finesser on that piano.
And the way he listens and responds to, to my musicianship is so endearing.
And on bass is Eliot Seppa, who I attended Howard University with.
Just a delight to be with, with a very, very cute sense of humor.
It's very slick 'cause he is kind of quiet sometimes.
And on drums and cymbals is the Lil John Roberts, who I met on a gig with George Duke in 2000... either 10 or 11, at the reopening of the Howard Theater.
I might have turned around one too many times at the drummer.
'Cause I was like, who is this playing on these drums?
John has my heart, I love him.
Try to refine my musicianship around my goal of reaching people through the ideology of love and how impactful it can be on both sides.
Um, love is the catalyst for war and creation.
So if, um, some type of way I can mold my sound to always insinuate love in some type of way, that's, that's my, my goal.

IMANI GRACE: Terrance Cunningham!
I really like music that, um, I sound good singing, um, less, uh, superficial.
I like music that fits the voice of someone who understands struggle but doesn't live in it.
Um, I'm not a belter all the time.
Um, and I strive to have the sound of comfort.
So any song lyrically, melodically, harmonically that lends itself to that is usually butter to me.
Um, from jazz to soul, R&B, rock, funk, disco, blues, I, I, I do love it all.
And it's all found a way to my heart and specifically for this performance because it is a, uh, a show that will be a first time for a lot of folks who Imani Grace is.
I thought, okay, now's the time.
Pull out the bag to let 'em get a taste of the rainbow here.
Um, so I've, I have definitely found comfort in the styles of "We Are King" out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, my hometown, woop-woop.
Uh, because they seem to have found that sweet spot in their writing that doesn't require as much... bang for the beauty to really shine.
