I'm a member of Ashes & Arrows.
And without going into the weeds of my musical life, I started playing music when I was 12 or 13, hacking away on the drums.
And I grew up in a small town in New Zealand, as well.
So, I grew up playing a lot of rugby and cricket and music was just always kind of on the side, playing in rock bands and trying to just have fun, basically.
And I was about 19 when I had a sort of epiphany that I didn't want to be a school teacher.
You know, I wanted to pursue music and see where that road would lead.
And I moved to the States in 2019 and been here ever since.
Settled up in North Carolina with my "man" husband here that we're in the band life together, (laughter) and we're figuring it out.
And it's been amazing.
It's had a lot of challenges, but we couldn't be happier really going through it.
So- - Yeah.
Well, my name's Jonathan, also with Ashes & Arrows.
I started music sometime in my early teens and never really had like a thing that I was trying to strive for with music, but randomly at an open mic, I was-- I met Ciaran and we sort of hit it off.
My story's not as interesting as Ciaran's!
Mine is just, like, randomized stuff that just kind of came together!
(chuckles) So now, I get to pursue something that's really exciting and enjoyable and fulfilling.
- [Jonathan] We're gonna play you guys a bunch of songs that we wrote.
So if you guys like 'em, thank you.
And if you don't like it, keep it to yourself!
(audience laughs) Unless you guys have rotten tomatoes!
I've never been a part of a show where we've gotten thrown at before, but it'd be really awesome to experience it once!
(audience laughs) So, thank y'all for bein' here.
We are Ashes & Arrows.
This is a really cool experience for us.
Thank y'all so much.
We'll have some more stories to tell you later on.
Some cool stuff, sad stuff, and fun stuff.
So, it's gonna be a lot of fun tonight.
Thank y'all.
(audience cheers/applauds) (gentle guitar music) ♪ - [Ciaran] Actually y'all, the last time we were in California, we were actually here for a TV show we were on called "America's Got Talent".
Did anyone happen to see us on that show?
Was there anyone there?
(light applause) Awesome.
Y'all, that was a crazy time.
We didn't plan to be on that show.
It just kind of happened, and we thought we would do the audition.
"Let's just give it a go.
Let's see what happens."
And we got voted through, which was crazy.
We were not expecting it!
(laughs) And then people kept just voting.
It was the strangest thing.
We just kept being on the show, and it was such a blast.
And for me personally, y'all, it was a crazy experience, 'cause I had all these thoughts in my head about the show itself.
I was like, "I don't want to do that.
"You know, it's like a Hollywood thing.
"I don't"-- You know, "I want to be a musician.
I want to be a real musician," right?
(chuckles) All of that stuff.
And I did a little bit of soul digging, and I realized, "No dude, you're just scared.
"You're scared to do it," right?
And we ended up doing the show, and it was such a blast.
I learned so much about just getting out of your own way and really going for something if you believe in something, you believe in yourself, you've got that intuition in your belly, "I really want to do that."
The thing that holds us back is ourselves 9 times out of 10.
So, it was such an amazing lesson for me personally.
And for the band, it's been amazing 'cause wonderful people like yourselves saw us on there, and we get to come and do shows like this.
So, we're very grateful for that.
(gentle guitar music) And all of that to say, this next song is one of my favorite songs.
We played it on the show.
It's a tune called "Hang On", and it's a song about just persevering through hard times, y'all.
So, we dedicate it to you all.

You know, I don't think we're reinventing the wheel with our music, but I think the highlight of the band thus far has been I think, the three voices.
The three-part harmony is what we get a lot of feedback on.
That people really enjoy that.
And we enjoy singing that, so it's a win-win.
And we just try to write songs that feel honest.
Like when Jonathan and I get together, it usually looks like us just kind of talking about what's going on in your life, you know?
- Mm hm.
- It's a... There's always an element of vulnerability to it, you know, where you're like sharing about your life, what's going on, what you're thinking about.
And it usually gets the ball rolling.
You know, I'll say something, Jonathan then shares something.
And we might (snaps) strike an idea that we resonate with, and we'll build a song from there.
And there's a lot of terrible songs we write (chuckles) that never see the light of day!
- Never will!
- Yeah, but you know, every now and then we'll get a song that we both really like.
And, you know, we get in the studio, record it and put it out.
You never know how songs are going to be received with people, but you can only go with your gut.
Yeah, it's we're figuring it out.
So- And we also don't want to pigeonhole ourselves too much.
You know, like we've been talking about that recently.
We're not getting together to write "acoustic Americana folk songs."
You know, we want to keep things open-minded because creativity's boundless.
- Mm hm.
- And, I don't think-- People want to know what genre you are.
They're like, "What do you play?"
They want to understand, and I get it.
And also, sometimes that can be a little limiting if you buy in too much to the story of "what you are," so to speak, so we like to keep it open.
But also, we do kind of see what the bones of the band are, and we do want to stay true to that to a degree.
So it's a balance trying to, you know, be dynamic and write songs that are interesting to you, but also not straying too far from what you do best.

Cool little country, man.

And I thought it was quite possibly the worst song ever written!
And Jonathan played me a song he wrote when he was roughly the same age.
And I said to him, I was like, "Dude, that is the most beautiful song I've ever heard in my life."
