A black Seattle therapist is on a mission to strengthen mental health among black Indigenous communities and people of color in Washington.
To do so, therapists Ashley McGirt-Adair, created a space after often feeling a lack of representation at conferences among her peers who didn't look like her.
In July, McGirt-Adair held her first annual Reclaiming Wellness Conference at Green River College.
It drew nearly 200 participants, as well as a virtual audience.
Black clinicians say in this day and age, there's no reason why racial anxiety, and racial trauma is not looked at as a medical condition that could potentially harm somebody's health.
McGirt-Adair says, "For black people, wellness, joy and abundance is our birthright".
In 2020, she founded the Therapy Fund Foundation after seeing the impact of COVID 19, and violent racism among the areas black community.
The foundation connects African-American Washingtonians with free mental healthcare, and reimburses black providers.
