What's in a name?
Much of our natural landscape still bears evidence of colonization in the names. Some of our most beloved places, such as Mount Rainier, serve as reminders of injustices committed against Indigenous communities.

Should Mt.
Rainier be renamed?
Crosscut's new video series Deeply Rooted, explorers have the names of some of our most beloved places like Mt.
Rainier serve as reminders of injustices committed against indigenous communities.
- I think renaming the mountain is one step toward some sort of solidarity and acknowledgement toward the indigenous people.
- Peter Rainier was a British Navy friend of explorer, George Vancouver.
He was never in the Northwest.
- You have Vancouver arrive, sees this beautiful mountain and names after his best friend.
You think about staking a claim on someone's not yours coming in and putting his name on it is disrespectful.
- And now, some are pushing for the name of the mountain to be changed to what it was originally called in the Lushootseed language, Tacoma.
- We're not rewriting the history here, we're reclaiming the history.
- I'm Starla Sampaco, watch new episodes of Deeply Rooted on croscut.com.
