THAT IS UNLESS THE HOLIDAY REQUIRES ADDITIONAL POLICE POWER.
SUPERINTENDENT DAVID BROWN SAITH A STATEMENT... BROWN'S ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOWS AN ANALYSIS THAT FOUND 1,000 OFFICERS WERE SCHEDULED TO WORK 11 OR MORE CONSECUTIVE DAYS THIS YEAR SINCE 2018, 10 OFFICERS HAVE DIED BY SUICIDE INCLUDING THREE IN JULY.
>> ALDERMAN TOM TUNNEY OF THE 44TH WARD WILL NOT RUN FOR REELECTION.
TUNNEY IS THE FIRST OPENLY GAY PERSON TO SERVE ON THE CHICAGO CITY COUNSEL.
HE WAS ELECTED 20 YEARS AGO IN 2003 TO REPRESENT LAKEVIEW AND WRIGLEYVILLE.
I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TIRELESSLY FOR THE WARD THROUGH MY LAST DAY ON THE CITY COUNCIL.
AS I LOOK AHEAD, I SEE SO MANY GREAT WAYS IN WHICH I CAN CONTINUE TO GIVE BACK TO THE CITY I LOVE.
TUNNEY SAID IN A STATEMENT.
ANNOUNCEMENT MEANS THERE WILL BE AN OPEN CONTEST FOR THE 44TH WARD IN THE ELECTION.
TUNNEY ENDORSED HIS CHIEF OF STAFF BENNETT LAWSON.
>> PROSECUTOR REST THEIR CASE IN THE FEDERAL CHILD PORNOGRAPHY TRIAL OF CHICAGO BORN R&B SINGER R. KELLY.
IN THE TWO WEEKS OF EVIDENCE AND TESTIMONY MORE THAN 20 GOVERNMENT WITNESSES INCLUDING FOUR WOMEN WHO SAY THEY WERE SEXUALLY ABUSED BY KELLY.
SOME WERE AS YOUNG AS 14 YEARS OLD WELL UNDER THE LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT IN ILLINOIS.
THE DEFENSE WILL BEGIN PRESENTING ITS CASE ON THURSDAY.

AFTER TWO YEARS WILL STUDENTS GET TO ENJOY A FULLY UNINTERRUPTED SCHOOL YEAR.
HERE TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE CHANGES STUDENTS AND PARENTS CAN EXPECT IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE CHICAGO TEACHERS' UNION PRESIDENT STACY DAVIS GATES.
WELCOME BACK TO "CHICAGO TONIGHT."
COVID WORK STOPPAGES WILL THIS BE A FULL SCHOOL YEAR OF LABOR PEACE AND KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM?
>> WELL, I THINK THE QUESTION IS WILL WE HAVE THE TYPES OF MITIGATIONS THAT WE NEED TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES, PARIS.
THE WORK STOPPAGES WERE BECAUSE OF COVID, BECAUSE THERE NEEDED TO BE MITIGATIONS IN PLACE.
NOT BECAUSE OF JUST WORK STOPPAGES.
THAT SAID, COVID IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT BECAUSE WE HAVE A VACCINE AVAILABLE.
AND KEEPING SCHOOLS OPEN MEANS THAT THE DISTRICT SHOULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK WITH US TO GET OUR STUDENTS VACCINATED AGAIN.
THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF STUDENTS THAT WE SERVE AT THE CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE NOT VACCINATED.
THERE IS A SLOW UPTAKE WITH THEIR FAMILIES.
JUST THIS WEEK, WE HAVE ABOUT 600 OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY MEMBERS STUDENTS INCLUDED, THAT HAVE SELF REPORTED THE COVID -- THAT THEY HAVE CONTRACTED COVID.
THAT IS WITHOUT THE MASK.
ALSO, YOU KNOW AT THE END OF LAST WEEK, THE LABOR BOARD SAID THAT THE CHICAGO TEACHERS' UNION WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE DISTRICT HAVING TO NEGOTIATE WITH US ABOUT MASKING.
AND THAT IS A DISTRICT AND THE MAYOR GOT THAT WRONG.
WHAT I WILL SAY, PARIS, IT'S BEEN QUITE THE JOURNEY.
COVID HAS BEEN FRIENDLY TO NO ONE.
AND I'M PROUD OF OUR MEMBERS FOR INSURING THAT OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES CAN BE AS SAFE AS THEY ARE AND WE HAVE A WAYS TO GO.
>> YOU BRING UP THE JUDGE RULED IN YOUR FAVOR THE CITY WAS SUPPOSED TO NEGOTIATE GETTING THAT MASK MANDATE TAKEN AWAY.
THEY DIDN'T NEGOTIATE THAT WITH YOU IN GOOD FAITH.
SO THE C.P.S.
HAS BASICALLY FOLLOWING THE C.D.C.
GUIDELINES RIGHT NOW WHICH ARE MORE RELAXED.
ARE YOU OK WITH THAT?
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, ASK THE 600 PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN INTERRUPTED WITH COVID HOW THEY ARE FEELING ABOUT THAT.
MASKING IS A MITIGATION THAT DOESN'T TAKE A LOT.

IT IS A REQUIREMENT FOR MY HOUSEHOLD.
AND I THINK THAT IT'S SOMETHING THAT HELPS KEEP US ALL SAFE.

FOR THIS YEAR AS HAS BEEN REPORTED?
IT SOUNDS LIKE THINGS YOU ARE NOT IN AGREEMENT ON?
>> YOU ARE HEARING THAT COVID IS NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH STABILITY.
COVID IS NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH GOOD HEALTH.
OUR SAFETY AGREEMENT THAT WE CONCLUDED WITH PEDRO AND HIS TEAM SAID CLEARLY THAT WE HAVE A SAFETY NET.
MEANING THAT TESTING IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN.
MEANING THAT WE STILL HAVE SCHOOL WIDE SAFETY MEETINGS THAT WE HAVE A DISTRICT WIDE SAFETY COMMITTEE THAT WE HAVE A SAFETY NET TO CATCH US IF THINGS GO IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
>> LET'S TALK ABOUT ANOTHER ISSUE FACING TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY A TEACHER SHORTAGE.

HAS MOST OF THE TEACHER POSITIONS FILLED BUT THEY ARE 900 SHORT ON STAFF MEMBERS.
WHAT IS C.T.U.
PLAN TO DO TO TRY AND ACCELERATE THE HIRING OF SOME OF THOSE POSITIONS?
>> AGAIN, THE TWO WORDS I WILL USE IS PARTNERSHIP AND WITH.
WE DON'T KEEP TEACHERS INSIDE OF OUR SCHOOLS IF WE DON'T TEACH THEM WELL.
THE LABOR UNREST YOU DETAILED WAS ABOUT THE INHUMANITY OF THE PLANS THAT WERE PUT FORTH IN THE FIRST PLACE.
THE BURDEN THAT OUR TEACHERS AND OUR PARAPROFESSIONALS AND CLINICIANS HAVE TO SHOULDER BECAUSE WE ARE NOT WORKING WITH OR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ALSO GET TO MAKE DECISIONS.
WE'VE HAD TO FORCE OUR WAY.
THE FIRST THING I WILL SAY YOU HAVE TO RESPECT THE PEOPLE DOING THE WORK BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.
AND YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY FUNDING, AGAIN, THE STATE OF ILLINOIS IS SENDING FUNDING TO CHICAGO.
OUR DISTRICT WITH OUR MAYOR'S FUNDING FORMULA IT SENDS LESS MONEY TO THE SCHOOLS THAT NEED THE MOST.
WE GOT TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
IT BURNS PEOPLE OUT.
IT'S TOUGH BEING IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE WHAT YOU NEED.
>> THERE ARE CANDIDATES TO FILL THESE POSITIONS AND C.P.S.
NEEDS TO HIRE THEM?
OR THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH FOLKS IN THE PIPELINE TO GET THE POSITIONS?
>> I THINK IT'S THE MIDDLE.
OUR PIPELINE HAS BEEN INTERRUPTED.
WE NEED TO GET MORE BLACK AND BROWN TEACHERS IN THE PIPELINE.
AND THAT IS GOING TO TAKE COLLABORATION FROM TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND ZEROING IN ON THE ACTUAL EXPERTISE AT THAT TIME THEY NEED TO HAVE IN THE CLASSROOM.
THAT IS ONE THING.
AND THE SECOND THING IS WHAT I ELABORATED ON INITIALLY.
YOU HAVE TO TREAT PEOPLE WELL ONCE THEY BECOME A PART OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
AND I THINK THE THIRD THING IS THAT THERE HAS TO BE A PARTNERSHIP IN HOW YOU CREATE POLICIES.
THE POLICIES THAT WORK INSIDE THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY ARE POLICIES THAT ARE CREATED AND IMPLEMENTED WITH THE PEOPLE NOT AGAINST THEM AND NOT IN SPITE OF THEM.
>> RELATED TO THIS, STACY, 10 YEARS AGO THE SCHOOL CLOSINGS WERE HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL.
BUT RIGHT NOW THERE ARE MANY EN UNDER ENROLLED SCHOOLS AND A REPORT SHOWED THAT IT COSTS MUCH MORE PER STUDENT TO EDUCATE PER STUDENT AT AN UNDER ENROLLED SCHOOL.
PEDRO MARTINEZ HINTED AT PLANS TO RETHINK SOME OF THE SCHOOLS.
WHAT DO YOU THINK SHOULD BE DONE?

'S PLAN BE FOR THE UNDER ENROLLED SCHOOLS?

WE HAVE TO DEFINE UNDER ENROLLED.
DOES THAT BLACK CHILDREN ON THE WEST OR SOUTH SIDE MEANS THEY GET A SMALLER CLASS SIZE?
DOES IT MEAN THAT WHEN YOU HAVE UNDER ENROLLED SCHOOLS THAT YOU HAVE LESS STUDENTS THERE BUT THEY MAY HAVE MORE NEEDS?
SO YOU CAN CREATE A SCHOOL DAY THAT RESPONDS TO THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS THAT ARE THERE.
FOR INSTANCE, OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THE CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS NOW IS UPSIDE-DOWN.
IS THERE A WAY TO REFILL THE VAST MAJORITY OF OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS ARE BLACK SCHOOLS WHO GO TO SCHOOLS ON THE SOUTH AND WEST SIDES OF THE CITY.
CAN WE FIGURE OUT HOW TO OFFER SOMETHING TO OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS IN PLACES THAT ARE QUOTE UNDER ENROLLED THAT WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DO IN OTHER PLACES.
THE REIMAGINATION HAS TO BE WITH US.
LISTEN THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE KNOW.
THE ISSUE THAT WE'VE HAD IS THAT THEY DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO US UNTIL WE ARE ON THE PICKET LINE.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR IN THIS ERA OF LEADERSHIP, IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SIT AT A TABLE AND PARTNER AND TO CREATE THE TYPES OF POLICIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WILL GROW OUR DISTRICT, THAT WILL MEET THE NEEDS OF THE FAMILIES THAT CHOOSE OUR DISTRICT AND TO PROVIDE A BASE LEVEL OF SUPPORT IN ALL OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED BY THE UNDER FUNDING OVER GENERATIONS.

COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER BRANDON JOHNSON IS CONSIDERING IT, IS BRANDON JOHNSON THE C.T.U.
BACKED CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR?
>> A COUPLE OF THINGS.
BRANDON JOHNSON SHOULD CONSIDER IT.
BRANDON JOHNSON LEADS HIS COMMUNITY OF AUSTIN EVERYDAY TO DROP CHILDREN OFF TO SCHOOL ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE AND THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO.
HE KNOWS THE STRUGGLE OF CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENTS.
AND BEYOND THAT, LOOK, WE NEED PARTNERSHIP.
WE WANT TO WORK IN COLLABORATION TO MAKE THE CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS THE SHINING STAR OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THIS COUNTRY AND THE ONLY WAY WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT IS WITH A LEADER WHO IS INVESTED BECAUSE HE HAS FAMILY, BECAUSE HE IS LIVING IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT NEED IT THE MOST.

ACCORDING TO CITY DATA SO FAR THIS YEAR THERE HAVE BEEN 31 PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLIST DEATHS IN CHICAGO.
MORE THAN 1800 INJURIES, AND OF THOSE INJURIES, 390 PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS WERE LEFT INCAPACITATED.
INITIATIVES LED BY CHICAGO OFFICIALS AIM TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY BUT WHAT MORE CAN BE DONE.
JOINING YOUR ARE AMY RYNELL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE ONE OF THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT DID SIGN ON TO THE LETTER.
AND DAVID SMITH THE BHOIK AND PEDESTRIAN PROGRAM MANAGER AT THE CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.

ILLINOIS IS HOPING TO GET A LOT OF MONEY FROM THAT FEDERAL LAW AND IN THIS LETTER ASKING THE GOVERNOR AND I DOT TO USE SOME OF THE MONEY FOR REASONS LIKE MAKING ROADS SAFER FOR VULNERABLE USERS.
WHAT IN A PRACTICAL WAY DOES THAT MEAN?
>> OUR ROADWAYS ARE DESIGNED TO FACILITATE SPEED TO MOVE CARS FROM A TO B AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
AND THAT IS IN CONFLICT WITH PEOPLE WHO WALK TO GET AROUND PLACES, TAKE BUSES AND WITH CYCLISTS IT MAKE OUR ROAD MORE DANGEROUS FOR PEOPLE NOT INSIDE A MULTITON VEHICLE.
THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES AT THE STATE LEVEL TO CHANGE POLICY AND PRIORITIES AROUND MAKING OUR STREETS SAFER AND MANY OF THOSE STREETS THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT FALL WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS.
>> CAN YOU GIVE ME ONE EXAMPLE WHAT YOU COULD DO TO A STREET TO MAKE IT SAFER FOR A VULNERABLE ROAD USER A PEDESTRIAN, A BICYCLIST?
>> SURE, THE MORE LANES THERE IS TO CROSS THE MORE UNSAFE IT IS.
WE HAVE A LOT OF FOUR-FIVE-AND SIX-LANE STREETS AND TO MAKE THOSE SAFER FOR EVERYONE AND SLOW CARS DOWN.
REDUCE THE TRAFFIC LANES AND BUILD IN OTHER THINGS THAT MAKE PEOPLE DRIVE SLOWER AND MAKE CROSSING SAFER.
THINGS LIKE RAISED CROSSWALKS.
SHORTER DISTANCES FOR CROSSING.
PROTECTED BIKE LANES AND OTHER THINGS.

BECAUSE SORT OF MIX IN WITH THIS CDOT IS FIVE YEARS INTO VISION ZERO CHICAGO.
AND THAT IS A TRAFFIC SAFETY PLAN THAT AIMS TO DO JUST WHAT IT SAYS AND THAT IS ELIMINATE FATALITIES AND SERIOUS INJURIES FROM TRAFFIC CRASHES LITERALLY DOWN TO ZERO.
OBVIOUSLY THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL.
IS IT REALISTIC?
>> WELL, AMANDA, AT THE CITY OF CHICAGO WE ARE COMMITTED TO MAKING SURE THAT EVERYBODY CAN MOVE AROUND OUR CITY, MOVE AROUND OUR STREETS SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY REGARDLESS OF YOUR AGE.
WHETHER YOU ARE A CHILD OR A SENIOR CITIZEN.
NO MATTER YOUR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION WHETHER YOU ARE WALKING, BIKING GETTING TO PUBLIC TRANSIT OR DRIVING.
AND REGARDLESS OF YOUR ABILITY.
A PERFECTLY ABLE-BODIED INDIVIDUAL OR IN A WALKER OR WHEELCHAIR EVERYBODY DESERVES TO BE ABLE TO GET AROUND OUR CITY SAFELY.
AND WE ARE COMMITTED TO THAT AS A DEPARTMENT AND AS A CITY.
>> DAVID, I WAS GOING TO ASK WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM'S SUCCESSES IN TRYING TO ACHIEVE THAT GOAL?
>> WE'VE HAD EXCITING WORK HAPPEN OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS.
A PART OF THAT HAS BEEN THANKS TO A LOCAL FUNDING SOURCE CALLED CHICAGO WORKS WHICH WAS IMPLEMENTED UNDER MAYOR LORI LIGHTFOOT.
IT'S PROVIDED OVER $20 MILLION OF ANNUAL MONEY FOR COMPLETE STREETS PROJECTS.
WITH THAT FUND WE HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTING MORE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR VULNERABLE ROADWAY USERS PEOPLE WALKING AND BIKING THAN EVER BEFORE.
PROTECTED BIKE LANES, NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS, PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS.

AND AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW AND HAVE HEARD, WE WILL BE GIVING AWAY 5,000 BICYCLES OVER THE COMING YEARS TO CHICAGOANS.

OUR INFRASTRUCTURE HAS NOT BUILT TO SUPPORT THAT IN THE WAY IT SHOULD.
THERE ARE REALLY POSITIVE THINGS HAPPENING BUT THERE'S ALSO A LOT MORE SPEEDING AND IT FEELS REALLY DANGEROUS OUT THERE.

WHY HASN'T THE CITY BEEN ABLE TO QUELL THIS?
>> WELL, AS A COUNCIL WE INTRODUCED ALDERMAN HOPKINS PASSED AN ORDINANCE THAT IS IN EFFECT WHAT WE HAVE SEEN THIS IS NOW AFFECTING ALMOST EVERY WARD ACROSS THE CITY AND IT'S BECOMING NOT ONLY MORE FREQUENT AND MORE VIOLENT.
I THINK THAT ONE OF THE CONCERNS THAT WE HAVE IS THAT OUTSIDE OF THE IMMEDIATE APPROACH TO THE ORDINANCE, IMPOUNDING AND HEFTY FEES THAT COME WITH IT I THINK WE NEED A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH.
MY CONCERN IS THE STATE OF THE CITY ON THE CONDITIONS IN THE SCHOOLS ARE MAKING THIS AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK WHEN WE SEE THE ISSUE GETTING WORSE AND WORSE AND WE ARE NOT TAKING ACTION OUTSIDE OF THE ACTION THAT CITY COUNCIL IS TAKING.
AND THIS IS GOING TO JUST GET WORSE AND WORSE IF WE DON'T TAKE ACTION AND A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUNG ADULTS AND MINORS HAVE ACTIVITIES IN SCHOOLS AND BEYOND AND WITH DOWNTOWN WE'RE SEEING ALL THE ISSUES GET WORSE AND WORSE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS WITHOUT A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH WHAT THE CITY NEEDS.

WE'RE SEEING THE IMPACT ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

THEY HAVE YouTube CHANNELS.
THIS IS A VERY SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN PHENOMENON.
THEY WANT ATTENTION.
THEY CRAVE LIKES AND SUBJECT VIBERS AND FOLLOWERS.
WE'RE WATCHING THEM RESPOND TO NEWS OF THIS ORDINANCE AND TO THE FACT AS YOU MENTIONED IN THE LEAD WE'VE IMPOUNDED SEVEN VEHICLES.
AND BY THE WAY THAT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
WE HAVE PLANS TO IMPOUND DOZENS MORE IN THE COMING WEEKS.
WE THINK THAT WILL HAVE AN EFFECT BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO DO THIS PUT A LOT OF MONEY INTO THOSE VEHICLES.
IT IS THEIR PRIZED POSSESSION.
AND THE LAST THING THEY WANT IT FOR THAT THING TO BE HELD CAPTIVE AND WALKER DRIVE WE'VE HAD TO GO IN OUR CAREERS AS CHICAGO RESIDENTS.
THAT IS NOT THE PLACE YOU WANT A VEHICLE AT THAT TIME YOU CARE ABOUT TO BE IMPOUNDED.
AND THIS IS A STRONG DETERRENT EFFECT THAT IS TAKING PLACE RIGHT NOW.

AGAIN, I DO THINK WE NEED A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH.
THIS IS A FIRST STEP AND WE NEED TIME BUT THE ROOT CAUSES IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND START ACTING ON.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE US USE THE TEETH THEY WERE GIVEN WHEN THE ORDINANCE PASSED A MONTH AGO.
WE HAVE DOZENS OF CARS INVOLVED IN THIS, HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS WITH THEIR CARS, IT'S NOT AN EASY TASK TO IMPOUND HUNDREDS OF CARS AT ONCE.
IT REQUIRES A GREAT MOBILIZATION OF RESOURCES, MANPOWER, TOW TRUCKS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF STREETS AND SANITATION ALL OF THAT.
A LOT OF THE PLANNING THAT IS GOING FORWARD RIGHT NOW IS SORT OF RAMPING UP AS WE TEST THIS OUT ON A SMALLER SCALE, AND EVENTUALLY GET TO THE POINT WHERE WE POTENTIALLY COULD IMPOUND DOZENS OF CARS AT ONE TIME.
AND TO YOUR EARLIER QUESTION IF WE DO THAT THAT ABSOLUTELY WILL HAVE A CHILLING EFFECT.

THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THE MISSILES' MARGIN OF ERROR AND THE PROXIMATION TO CITIES THAT COULD HAVE LEAD TO AN IMPACT OF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR.
THERE WAS A LAWSUIT BUT, BEFORE THAT CAME TO TRIAL PRESIDENT NIXON ANNOUNCED THE MISSILE PROGRAM WOULD BE SCRAPPED SO NO MISSILES WERE EVER INSTALLED AROUND MAJOR CITIES.
>> WERE REMNANTS OF NIKE SITES STANDING?
>> ALMOST ALL OF THE TOWERS AND CONTROL FACILITIES ARE GONE NOW INCLUDING ALL TRACES AT MONTROSE HARBOR TO OUR VIEWER'S QUESTION.
BUT SOME BUILDINGS STILL STAND INCLUDING IN WOLF LAKE WHERE THERE IS AN ACTUAL NIKE MISSILE ON DISPLAY.
AND BELMONT HARBOR SAME THING.
BECAME A LARGE GRASSY AREA BUT IT SHOULD BE SAID IN 1971 BEFORE THE U.S. GOVERNMENT GAVE UP OWNERSHIP OF THAT SITE, INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OCCUPIED IT DEMANDING THE GOVERNMENT TURN THE AREA INTO PUBLIC HOUSING AND A SCHOOL FOR THEIR COMMUNITY.
EVENTUALLY THEY WERE FORCIBLY REMOVED AND THEY WENT ON TO OCCUPY OTHER FORMER MILITARY GROUNDS.
>> NEARLY FIVE DECADES AFTER THE LAST NIKE SITE CLOSED SINCE THEN RUSSIA HAS INVADED UKRAINE CAN WE DRAW LESSONS BY RECALLING THAT ERA OF NIKE MISSILES IN THE COLD WAR ARMS RACE?
>> WELL FOR ONE THING THAT I REMEMBER IT WAS VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE AND FOR THAT AND OTHER REASONS, THE TWO COLD WAR SUPERPOWERS STEPPED BACK FROM THE BRINK SIGNING THAT SALT TREATY THAT I MENTIONED EARLIER AIMED AT LIMITING PRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR TIPPED MISSILES AND THE SOVIET UNION COLLAPSED.
ALL I CAN SAY WE CAN ONLY HOPE THE WORLD LEARNED FROM HISTORY AS EVENTS UNFOLD IN UKRAINE TODAY.
