As Washington's ecosystems change, scientists are rethinking conservation efforts to save them.
The Natural Areas program is a managed collection of the state's rare and significant ecosystems.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the program is critical for preserving native biodiversity in Washington, but climate change is challenging its future.
Crowberry bog, named for a plant that sheds its fruit there, is one example of a protected rare ecosystem in the program.
As the only raised plateau bog in the state, it's been designated as a preserve to limit access and protect its most vulnerable plans.
Ecologist Joe Rocchio, who manages Washington's Natural Heritage Program, believes the state needs to adjust its conservation priorities and bring climate change into the decision-making process.
