A real estate trend exploded during the pandemic where equity firms and investor owners targeted manufactured homes for purchase.
But those homeowners, many on fixed incomes, are calling foul as rents and fees rise.
A manufactured homeowner's advocate says, "These communities are dealing with a multi-year gentrification cycle, where the end game is to gain a group of residents paying higher rents and flipping the parks for many times the price they purchased it."
Crosscut investigated the growing influence of Port Orchard based Hurst & Son LLC's expansion in the Pacific Northwest.
The owners purchased nearly 64 mobile home parks between 2017 and 2023, with numerous purchases during the pandemic.
Now the company owns manufactured home communities in five states, 60 parks in 13 Washington counties.
In email state officials contend Hurst & Son are following relevant laws, the owners have declined to comment.
