In an arts road trip from Edmonds to Bellingham, Crosscut heads up I-5 to explore beyond the Seattle bubble.
First stop, the Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds.
Part of Cascadia's mission is to rescue and elevate forgotten figures who deserve to be remembered.
So, in addition to seeing art by Northwest luminaries, much of the enjoyment here is in seeing pieces by lesser-known artists, like Maude I. Kerns.
Crosscut also stopped at the Tulalip Tribe's Hibulb Cultural Center.
The grand canoe hall features two cedar welcome figures, one of which was carved from a fallen tree by master carver James Madison in the image of his great-grandmother.
The arts journey includes stops in Mount Vernon, La Conner, and then Bellingham with a look at the George Rodriguez exhibit at the Whatcom Museum and the amazing sculpture park at Western Washington University.
I'm Starla Sampaco.
