Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(reverent orchestral music) - Hello, I'm Stephen Hegg in the Crosscut KCTS 9 newsroom.
(gentle music) Until COVID-19 reared its head last year, Stevie Shao had never painted a mural.
As businesses boarded up, murals had to go up quickly.
Shao had done some creative work for the Ballard Alliance while a design student, and they commissioned a mural from her.
It seems simple, a black cityscape on white with a cheery pink message: "It's going to be okay."
But that design had power and drew attention.
And as Seattle ushered a new era of public art, Shao's career took off.
She uses vibrant colors and draws inspiration from animals, Chinese folklore and tattoo designs.
At 23, Stevie Shao has become one of the city's most recognized and in-demand muralists and illustrators.
I'm Stephen Hegg.
