This was while you were still in college?
This was while I was in college.
All right, so now you were UAB, right?
Yeah, I went to Shelton State, then UAB.
And you played baseball.
-Do won baseball down there?
-Yeah.
So, and you were pre-med, is that right?
Yeah, I was pre-med.
I wanted to do pharmacy school, then realized, "Oh my God, I can do this.
Let's try med school."
And then I realized, "Maybe I can do this."
And it was right, it was just around 2020, and all the stuff was going on, and I just- -Pandemic.
-Didn't know what to believe.
You know, didn't know right from wrong.
I didn't know what to do, and I just decided, you know, I'm just gonna give it, take a gap year or two, and started playing gigs.
And I think the Lord kind of forced me on that route.
Had to have been, because there's no other explanation for why I backed out of med school.
Well, I would say, coming back home to the Shoals with this new idea of what you wanted to do, or attempt to do.
First thing I gotta ask is, what did your parents say?
(laughs) They're supportive, 'cause most parents would be like, "Dude, go get a job, or go to the real world."
Or go get a medical degree.
Yeah, go get a medical degree.
But I come back, I'm like, you know, I got a little money saved up.
I'm gonna play some gigs and just see what happens.
And I just kind of rolled off that for a while and got by, and- So, the question then, after, what did your parents say, is when you came back to the Shoals, with this new understanding of yourself, and this new idea, this new passion, did you immediately seek out mentors in the Muscle Shoals music industry?
Or did they find you?
At first, I definitely sought out people.
I remember I came into where we're at right now.
First time I'd ever met anybody in the music industry, I come into that office and met Gary Baker.
-Yeah.
-And hung out.
And we recorded a song, and that was kind of it for a while.
And he literally gave me the best advice, but it kind of crushed me at that point in time.
He said, "Man, the best thing you can do is you could just go out and just figure it out."
He said, "You're gonna get better.
Go out and play.
That's the best advice I can give you."
And that point in time, I'm thinking, "I want him to help me.
Make me a star."
Well, two, you know, two years goes by, a year and a half goes by, I call him back.
I'm like, "Dude, thank you so much for that advice because I wasn't ready.
I'm still not ready for whatever is to come.
You know, I've gotta get better, I've got growing to do."
And then I think that, naturally, through playing shows, I just met some of these cats like Gary Nichols.
I've always looked up to him, played shows with him.
And Rodney at "Fame" is, you know, I gotta be honest with you, I mean this is gonna sound crazy, but I didn't know until I moved back from college the history of "Muscle Shoals."
-Really.
-I grew up just kind of playing ball, had my head down.

-(everybody cheering) -Hey, not to get long- -So, before we get outta here, we've gotta talk about this guy.
Just for the folks who aren't really sure what they've been looking at.
Can we talk?
Is there a story here that we need to know?
This is a conglomerate of a lot of different moments in my life, I believe.
Sweet Linda made this for me and she brought it to me backstage today.
And I mean, everything down to this is a hat that I had that I lost.
She didn't know that it was a hat that had special meaning to me that I lost.
There's no telling where it is.
You've got the bling, look, I've got the bling.
This is literally me.
I used to wear jerseys all the time.
I still do seldomly.
The dude is rocking the jersey.
That is my exact guitar.
And that is the guitar I played today that the Southern Jumbo, The same strap I normally wear, I didn't wear today.
Eagles, 'cause I'm an Eagles fan.
And then on the back, look at this, this is so detailed.
This is a cherry tree that had fall in her yard.
There's a baseball, 'cause I played baseball.
A baseball bat with my song "Good Guys" on it.
I mean, this could not be more detailed.
[Fletcher] Honestly, I think this needs to be a part of Austin Bohannon's show, every show from now on.
This needs to be on stage.
Oh, yeah, this is my new little buddy.
[Fletcher] Have you named him?
I mean, I'm tempted to just do Bo.
[Fletcher] Just go, we just call him Bo?
You know, because Bo is like kind of my nickname.
So this could be like my alter ego.
-Okay, there we go.
-If somebody's like talking smack to me, I'll say, "You gotta take it up with Bo."
-Oh.
-(both laughing) Love Bo, he's awesome, and hopefully, he will bring you joy and luck and, man, hopefully- Hopefully, there's not a curse tied to this thing.
