(audience applauding) - Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to the Fall 2022 Commencement Ceremony.
(audience cheering) Today we recognize and celebrate our graduating seniors from the College of Ag.
and Natural Resources- (audience cheering) from the College of Communication, Arts and Sciences- (audience cheering) from Lyman Briggs College- (audience cheering) From the College of Natural Science- (audience cheering) and from the College of Nursing.
(audience cheering) I am so pleased that we can all be here together.
Oh, did I miss someone?
Who did I miss?
Oh, the College of Engineering.
(audience cheering) Some parents were getting a little worried.
(Teresa laughing) But I am pleased that we can all gather here in a place that has seen many Spartan triumphs to celebrate this milestone for our graduates of our MSU.
Today we recognize excellence and determination exhibited by each and every one of our graduates to arrive at this point and the contributions of those who supported them along their educational journey.
My own sojourns, as many of you know, across this beautiful campus, takes me past Beaumont Tower, rising from the site of MSU's first instructional building.
College Hall is long gone, but its significance transcends this university.
The first building in America to offer instruction in scientific agriculture.
So it's appropriate that Beaumont Tower features a stone carving, bearing the image of the sower, a pastoral figure casting out seed.
Beyond paying homage to our agricultural roots, the allegorical sower symbolizes the virtue of investing today to reap tomorrow's harvest.
Together, we too have sown the seeds of future bounty, for our graduates and for a society very much in need of their knowledge, energy, and with each turning season, your growing wisdom.
So today we honor MSU's 167 year mission of education, research, and outreach as we certify you, our graduates, who are imminently equipped to engage and thrive in a dynamic world.
Graduates, I wanna tell you that as the proud daughter and granddaughter of teachers as well as a lifelong educator, I have always most enjoyed my time spent with students and watching each of you transform into our next generation of problem solvers, creators, and leaders.
Having met many of you, knowing firsthand the excellence of MSU's programs, I have great confidence in the transformational capacity of each of you for your families, communities, and the world we all share.
Today, we are proud to honor each and every one of you and salute those earning academic distinction.
We celebrate the diversity and special unity of the Spartan family, represented by the flags of the native lands of our students, and by the banners heralding our colleges.
So to celebrate all of you, and the excitement of this day, I ask our guests to join students and faculty in singing one stanza of The Star-Spangled Banner, performed by MSU jazz orchestra, the Bebop Spartans, under the direction of university distinguished Professor Rodney Whitaker.
The singing will be led by Sarah Whitaker, a senior in music performance.
Upon conclusion of the singing, please remain standing for a moment of silence.

Graduates, I'd like us to pause now to allow you a moment of silence to reflect on the opportunities for growth you've enjoyed at MSU and the relationships you've formed.
Thank you.
Please be seated.
Now I'd like to invite Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko to present this afternoon's candidates for honorary degrees.
- Thank you.
Dr. Phillips, please come forward.
Interim President Woodruff, I have the honor to present Dr. Elizabeth Phillips for awarding of the honorary degree, Doctor of Science.
(audience applauding) - Your honorary degree.
- Thank you.
- This is wonderful.
Thank you so much.
(indistinct conversation) I'll say a few words then hand it to you.
(audience applauding) - Dr. Phillips, you are a highly accomplished academic professional who has committed your life to improving mathematics education at all levels of learning.
You and your colleagues have dedicated numerous years to developing the Connected Math Project, a curriculum created to help students develop in-depth mathematical understanding and reasoning skills.
CMP has revolutionized middle school mathematics curriculum and touched millions of students throughout the years.
Currently under your direction, the fourth edition of CMP materials and its new CMP STEM problem format is being field tested with more than 500 middle school teachers in the United States and several foreign countries.
Being able to change math instruction from show-and-practice, to one where students explore connected sequences of problem-solving activities, is a big step in the development of students' mathematical learning.
The efforts you have made to transform mathematical teaching and learning is extraordinary.
Spurring the work of more than 150 research articles and reports, 40 books, 50 conference proceedings, 70 dissertation theses, and 25 evaluation studies, CMP has become an international staple in education and Michigan State University is proud to be part of that.
Royalties from CMP have created an endowment fund that supports numerous activities in math and science education here, including the Lappan-Phillips-Fitzgerald Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education and several Lappan-Phillips professorships.
With National Science Foundation funding, CMP is currently developing a digital collaborative platform, which embeds the CMP curriculum materials for students and teachers.
It provides new ways for students to explore complex mathematical tasks, represent their thinking using a variety of tools, share and access work to and from each other in real-time, and curate their work across individual tasks in a customized learning log.
It also includes collaborative spaces for teachers to promote planning, teaching, and reflection of student thinking.
Achieving more than $28 million in NSF funding over the years is an incredible accomplishment.
You've shared your expertise in a variety of settings by writing and editing books and papers, hosting workshops, and serving on MSU and national committees.
Your skills have been highly sought after and you have been a consultant for schools, conferences, and curriculums.
You've also been a reviewer for education standards, research grants, and teacher preparation programs.
In recognition of your and your colleagues' work, you have received a multitude of well-deserved awards such as the International Society for Design and Developmental Award, MSU's Distinguished Academic Staff Award and the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire President's Award for outstanding professional achievement.
In addition to these recognitions, you were a visiting scholar at Cambridge University, inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, and featured in Michigan Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Exhibit.
These numerous awards are also a testament to your work in math education.
Your 48 years of service and mathematics education research, and your immense contribution to STEM education research, serves as an inspiration to our MSU students as they prepare to embark on their own extraordinary journeys.
For your service and dedication to advancing the greater Spartan community, I am pleased to award the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from your Michigan State.
(audience applauding) Congratulations.
- Wow.
Well, I would like to thank Interim President Woodruff and the MSU Board of Trustees for this amazing award.
I'm deeply humbled, but I'm also delighted to accept this award on behalf of my Connected Mathematics colleagues who have worked with passion, vision, and commitment to improving the teaching and learning of mathematics for these past 40 years.
The CMP story began in the 1980s when the late Bill Fitzgerald, Glenda Lappan, and I, as members of the math department, were concerned that 30% of our MSU freshmen were placed into remedial mathematics courses, most of them women and minorities.
So we, as we pondered the causes and possible solutions, we formed a vision of a mathematics classroom that played out our deeply held beliefs and firmly grounded theories on what mathematical ideas are important for students to learn and a classroom where students experience mathematics that open their eyes to the beauty and the wonder of our amazing physical and intellectual world.
In developing this curriculum, we have taken the stand that the curriculum and instruction are not distinct.
The circumstances in which students learn affects what is learned.
The what to teach and the how to teach it are inextricably linked.
So developing a problem-based curriculum with a complex set of interrelated goals takes time and input from many people.
I would like to thank the thousands of teachers and students who opened their classrooms and worked alongside us these past many years.
They are a significant part of the team of professionals that made these materials happen.
From these students and their teachers, I keep learning about what it means to understand important mathematics and ways to engage with problems.
Some of these teachers are in the audience today, and as one of them said many years ago, when you sign on with Betty and Glenda, you do not know you were signing on for life.
I would also like to thank the mathematics educators and particularly Jim Fey and Susan Friel for their contributions.
And thank you to the many graduate and undergraduate students at MSU CMP office for their valuable support and contributions and good humor even through those tense times.
Finally, I want to thank my family, in particular, my father and mother, Italian immigrants who shared their love of learning with their five daughters and encouraged us to follow our dreams.
I thought discussing Spinoza, black holes, and free love at the dinner table was a normal part of growing up.
I also owe much to my late husband, Richard E. Phillips, who nurtured and collaborated with me on so many of my interests.
In closing, for the MSU class of 2022, I hope that you all have the chance to pursue your dreams and see them come to fruition.
And that you'll be surrounded by inspiring and passionate colleagues and friends on your journey.
Thank you.
(audience applauding) - Lieutenant General Gabreski, please come forward.

(audience applauding) - Thank you, Interim President Woodruff for that huge honor, and thank you to everyone here who made that possible.
I am so honored to be here to join you all for this occasion and it's great to be at the home of Sparty.
Interim President Woodruff, Interim President Jeitschko, Executive Vice President Beauchamp, Trustees Byrum and Tebay, distinguished guests, esteemed faculty and staff here at MSU, as we celebrate today's commencement, thank you for your efforts in developing and educating these talented young men and women.
I can't thank you enough for inviting me here to be part of such an auspicious event.
The MSU faculty, staff and associated organizations have contributed to and prepared generations to go out in the world and make a difference.
I speak firsthand when I say there is a great value and a direct connection between the kind of education and experiences that I got at my college, Louisiana State University, and they gave me the ability to deal with the many challenges of an Air Force career and beyond.
I am confident that today's graduates will experience the same benefits from their time here at MSU.
So most of what I learned at LSU served me well in 35 years in the Air Force, and again, beyond.
And even the bad lessons have come in handy.
The academics, the lessons, and friendships developed here will always be a part of every graduate's fiber.
To the family and friends of those graduating here today, a special thanks.
I have no doubt that one of the key reasons these men and women have performed in such exemplary fashion is because of your love and support.
Thank you.
(audience applauding) Let's give it to them.
(audience applauding) And finally, to the proud graduates here today, congratulations.
You began your college experience as ordinary citizens.
Today, you begin your life in what you hear referred to as the real world and hopefully, you'll pursue lives that will give you passion and purpose, if not right this moment, in the future and along paths that you may not expect.
More about that in a minute.
And you graduates and I have something in common.
I am also a December graduate of LSU.
So, football season was over, I had enough credits to graduate, it was time to get on with life.
But unlike any before you, you have lived your college experience in a very different environment, via Zoom, disconnected from each other and your families, and that has taught you and shown your resilience.
You are here today because of that resilience.
As I said, you're embarking on a new path in this so-called real world.
You've been preparing for this day and this new path for a while.
With resilience, you've overcome Coronavirus-induced disruptions and become proficient Zoomers.
You may have had a hard plan on what you will do in this real world, and you may have spent summer, all of your time here MSU, preparing for this plan of what you will do for a career, how you will support yourselves, and how you will spend your lives.
I know I certainly did.
So as you head out on this new path for your lives, I'd like to give you a few things to think about.
First, where you start out may not be where you end up.
And where you end up in 30 or 40 years, may be nowhere close to where you thought you'd be.
And that's a good thing.
Next, pursue your path with honor and integrity.
And last, don't be afraid of challenges.
So first, let's talk about where you start out may not be where you end up.
I'm gonna share a story with you.
When I showed up at LSU, my career path was to be president of the United States.
I was pretty sure I could do that.
And so I noticed that many presidents had law degrees, so I built my educational curriculum around pre-law.
I never lost sight of that ultimate objective.
Upon graduating from law school, I applied to and was accepted to the LSU Law School and I was elated.
I went home and told my parents, at which point my dad looked at me and said, Oh, who's gonna pay for that?
(audience laughing) Since I was lucky enough to have my parents pay for my undergraduate degree, this was pretty much of a shock.
I now had to consider how to get this done.
Both of my parents are Air Force veterans, so to me, military service presented a way for me to pursue my law school dreams as well as serve my country.
I discovered that the Air Force has a program called the Funded Legal Education Program.
You get commissioned, you get assigned a career field, and after about five years, you can sign up for this program for which the Air Force pays and you serve two years for every year that they pay for.
So what did I have to lose, right?
I applied for and was accepted to the Air Force Officer Training School, and was assigned duties as an avionics maintenance officer.
Fixing jets.
I am living testimony that life, and in my case, the Air Force, will train you to do whatever it is they want you to do.
I spent the next six years fixing small, fast jets and taking them all over the globe.
When it came time to apply for the Funded Legal Education Program, I did that and was accepted, but I was having a ball in aircraft maintenance.
My reaction was, and no offense to any lawyers in the crowd- (audience laughing) I don't need no stinking law degree.
What I'm doing is awesome.
So that's what I did for 35 years.
And I had the ride of a lifetime, with opportunities that I could never have imagined.
Things like soaring into the stratosphere in a U2 aircraft, commanding thousands of airmen, and as you heard, directing logistics for the Air War over at Kosovo in 1999.
And at the time I retired, I was the highest ranking woman in the Air Force.
Go figure.
(audience applauding) And while not yet president of the United States- (audience laughing) That might still be on the table.
(audience applauding) So the moral of this story is, of course, where you start may not be where you end up.
Your path today may not be your path at age 32 or 42.
I'll quote Conan O'Brien to say, failure to become your perceived ideal may be the best thing that could happen to you.
That was true for me, I can assure you.
So next, pursue your path with honor and integrity.
This is who you are.
You will be judged and ultimately, honor and integrity will be the difference between success or failure for you.
I worked for a guy named General John Jumper who eventually became the chief of staff of the Air Force who said, your most meaningful memories will be times when your character, integrity, endurance, stamina, and fortitude are challenged, and you have the courage to do the right thing.
Your reputation will get you where you wanna go.
Honor and integrity are the basis for your reputation, and you own your reputation, which will always precede you.
As Andy Kessler said recently, the real world is hard.
Reputations are made and lost by what's on the grapevine.
Honesty and integrity are the coin of the realm.
And I will tell you that your honor and integrity will take you farther than any other path.
Do the right thing.
Finally, don't be afraid of challenges.
Take risks, smart ones, but take risks.
Wayne Gretzky and Michael Scott had it right when they said, you miss a hundred percent of the shots you never take.
Thinking through challenges is a big deal.
Being able to shape events versus react to them will give you a leg up.
Education, pursuit of knowledge and your own experiences are the tools that will get you through these challenges and will continue to make you productive throughout the challenges.
Your education does not stop today.
You're just beginning a new chapter.
Arm yourselves with tools to succeed as you meet these challenges, whether they're expected or unexpected.
As Winston Churchill said, success is not final.
Failure is not fatal.
It is the courage to continue that counts.
Don't be afraid to fail.
Only be afraid of a regret that you didn't take a risk.
I guarantee you, you will surprise yourself.
So, with those thoughts in mind, I thank you for your commitment that got you to this point today.
You are our future.
Don't take that lightly.
No pressure.
You are ahead in the marathon of life and the goal is to finish.
You've already demonstrated the virtues of hard work and success that shape character, and stay on that path.
So when you accept your diploma today, breathe that quick sigh of relief, savor the moment, but know, we are all counting on you as the future of our country.
I am honored to share this moment with you and your families.
Good luck, Godspeed, and Go Green!
- [Audience] Go White!
(audience applauding) - Thank you so much, Lieutenant General.
We will now have the pleasure of hearing the world leading Bebop Spartans under the direction of university distinguished Professor Rodney Whitaker.
The selection is entitled Can't Hide Love, composed by Clarence Alexander Skip Scarborough.
- Two, one, two.
One, two, three, four.
(upbeat music) (audience applauding) - Does that put you in the mood to graduate?
(audience cheering) Thank you so much, Rodney, for everything you do for Michigan State.
We just love and adore you and love and adore our Bebop Spartans.
So the honorable Melanie Foster of the MSU Board of Trustees from East Lansing will address the graduates and guests.
After, Trustee Foster, interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko will continue with our introductions.
(audience applauding) - Good afternoon.
Thank you, interim President Woodruff.
On behalf of the MSU Board of Trustees, I extend our welcome to graduates and your family and friends.
Under the Michigan Constitution, the Board of Trustees is the governing body of the university, and by whose authority the degrees are awarded.
As trustees, we see each commencement ceremony as a very memorable occasion, and we appreciate the opportunity to share this special time with you.
Today's ceremony represents the culmination of your academic achievement.
The degree that you have earned acknowledges your success, and it honors those who have encouraged and supported you.
Our wish is that you will use your intelligence and knowledge to improve the quality of life for your community and to advance the common good.
Our faculty, administrators and trustees are all very proud of you, so please let us add our congratulations and Go Green!
- [Audience] Go White!
(audience applauding) - Thank you, Trustee Foster.
I join you in congratulating our newest degree recipients.
Graduates, each of you embodies a unique confluence of knowledge.
These scholarly achievements culminate today in the conferral of degrees, along with the conferral of our great faith, our hope and our pride in what you will now do with your achievements.
Indeed, as we send you forth, we are counting on you to become the thought leaders, the innovators, and the doers of the 21st century.
Now it is my pleasure to introduce Renae Garcia, a nursing- (audience cheering) Indeed.
(audience laughing) A nursing major who was chosen by Senior Class Council to represent the class of 2022.
(audience applauding) - Thank you so much for the introduction.
Before I begin, I would like to take a minute to acknowledge those of you who have loved ones who are not here today to watch you walk across the stage.
Whether they were unable to make it, live too far away, or are in heaven, I know the feeling, and I would like to take a minute to remind you today that they have so much to be proud of you for.
None of us sitting here in this room are the same person that we were four years ago.
That's the beauty of becoming, which is what college is all about.
The epitome of the Spartan experience is evolving.
Evolving into a stronger, wiser, kinder, smarter version of yourself, utilizing the neuroplasticity in our brains to constantly learn, unlearn, and relearn new things.
That's also what life is all about.
To be alive is to be in a perpetual state of evolution.
So, regardless of how you got here, whether you attribute it to all of your late night library sessions, 7-Eleven taquitos, office hours, or even the unforgettable times we beat U of M in football during our time here, you made it.
And here we are, as ready as we'll ever be, to make our Spartan mark on the world.
As I'm sure many of you in this room will be able to relate, I have been blessed throughout my four and a half years here.
I've worked hard to excel in my classes, spent hundreds of hours volunteering for causes and people that I'm truly passionate about, fit in as many hours at work as I could, presided over the student nursing association, spent a summer studying Spanish abroad in Spain, all while becoming a nurse.
And now I'm about to begin working in a level one trauma emergency department next month.
And- (audience cheering) Thanks.
And though it is very tempting to be terrified to move into the real working world on our own, that would sell our education and experiences here at MSU short, because this university has prepared us for what is to come.
Not to mention, we are more prepared than the average college graduate.
We are the first generation that had to evacuate college campuses in the midst of the world shutting down and just carry on with our educations in the meantime.
We are graduating despite unprecedented challenges that the generations before us had not faced.
The majority of our college career relied on our own adaptability and determination to succeed.
Because as we learned, listening to hours of lecturers on Zoom in your bedroom is no easy feat.
COVID in college challenged us all in big in small ways, and I've talked to enough of my peers to know that we've all learned similar lessons from it.
We learned how to slow down.
We made friends with time.
We learned the value of technology and how to utilize it.
We discovered our resilience, tenacity, flexibility.
We gained a new understanding of the importance of the human connection.
And that health is a gift, not to be taken for granted.
We have learned that many things are completely and utterly out of our control, and that rolling with the punches is imperative.
Most likely, we all learned that failing a test won't, contrary to popular belief, kill you, and freshman year me is still shocked by that.
We learned how little we are, and how big hard things can be, and that that is okay.
We've all had moments in college where we laughed ourselves to tears, were frustrated beyond measure, had our hearts broken.
That's just part of the becoming.
We've all done many things we should be proud of.
We've also all probably done many things we should not be proud of, but let's never regret any of it because that's also just part of the becoming.
Unless you burned a couch, then I think the East Lansing Fire Department definitely wants me to tell you to regret that.
(audience laughing) Flourishing in the madness and making the chaos count is what it means to be a Spartan.
Luckily for us, that is also precisely what it takes to be successful.
So here's to us, here's to the homework we stayed up to do, into the ridiculously dark hours of the night.
Here's to our ambitions and failures, to our tears, and I love yous.
Here's to standing back up after life has driven you to your knees.
Here's to morning tailgates and stadium hotdogs.
Here's to the heartache that makes us, and the resilience that shapes us.
Here's to all of the advice, new friends and dining hall food, Brody Caf specifically.
Here's to the laughs and the memories we all have made in this city.
Here's to the dairy store, camp outs, and midnight screams.
Here's to the people that surprise you.
Here's to surprising yourself.
Here's to the tests we failed and to accepting that our best is enough.
Here's to exam weeks and game days, procrastination and sleep deprivation.
Here's to the (indistinct) and the farm lane walk sign being on.
(audience laughing) Here's to time that we will never get back.
Here's to thinking we wasted a lot of it, when really, it was spent creating us.
Here's to every single person about to walk across this stage and to all of the people who got us here.
Here's to all of the places we are headed and here's to forever becoming.
To be a Spartan, no matter your degree, is something to be ineffably proud of.
There are things this world needs done that only we can do.
We are the generation that is going to change the world we live in.
We have to.
It is our time to assist in its becoming.
Thank you and forever, Go Green!
(audience cheering) - Thank you Renae, and part of the becoming were also those wonderful words.
Thank you very much.
The Senior Class Council has worked tirelessly in support of the Senior Class Gift Campaign.
Presentation of the Senior Class Gift will be made by Bian Almjaree and Nicolas Prestly.
(audience cheering) - Good afternoon, fall class of 2022.
We hope that you are able to take the time that you need after today, to not only relax, but soak in the joy of the major milestone that you just completed.
I am the Senior Class Council General Assembly Liaison to ASMSU, Nicolas Prestly.
- And I am Bian Almjaree, the vice president of the Senior Class Council.
- On behalf of the Senior Class Council from ASMSU, the Associated Students of Michigan State University, congratulations on accomplishing something that your younger self would be so proud of.
And we hope that you push yourself to continue that drive, passion, and dedication, throughout the rest of your life.
- As we prepare to leave Michigan State University campus today, we start a new chapter of our lives.
The Senior Class Council wanted to ensure that we focus our effort and fund that truly creates a meaningful change and embodies what Spartans will, and makes an impact in the lives of students.
Every year, the Student Class Council advocate for an organization on campus that encourage our fellow seniors to direct their class gift to that organization.
- While you can support any cause that has a deep, personal meaning to you, the Senior Class Council has selected one to focus our efforts.
There are a lot of great efforts to support, however the Class Council has come to the decision to advocate for donations to the MSU Safe Place.
This service addresses relationship violence and stalking by providing advocacy, shelter, counseling, support groups, safety planning, and information and referrals to survivors of violence.
This service supports not only students, but faculty, staff, their partners, and children that are minors.
Working to advocate for students across campus, the Senior Class Council will continue to work with ASMSU to identify ways to make campus a safer place.
- With this in mind, we are proud to award this check to President Woodruff and Michigan State University.
We are thankful for those who have donated to the Senior Class Council campaign and encourage those who have not, to do that soon.
- Our work as advocates of change only continues as we walk across the stage today and into the bigger world.
As we go forward, it is up to every single one of us to stand up together and be the change that we want to see in the world.
When we do this, we can ensure a better future for every generation that comes after.
It is up to us to create the environment of empathy, support, and validation of others and their lived experiences because when no one else will, Spartans will.
Go Green!
- [Audience] Go White!
(audience applauding) - Thank you, Bian and Nicholas, a very generous and thoughtful gift.
Thank you.
I would now like to take a moment to acknowledge our outstanding faculty and academic staff who are here to celebrate with our graduates.
We're honored to welcome a number of the university's leaders who are seated on the platform, but who will not be speaking today.
In their many varied roles, they provide support across our academic mission, and are deeply invested in ensuring academic excellence and student success at Michigan State University.
Their presence makes the solemnity and significance of these moments.
Colleagues, please remain standing as your name is read.
And members of the audience, please hold your applause until all are introduced.
Bill Beekman, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives.
Benny Gore, Senior Vice President for Student Life and Engagement.
Mark Largent, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
Glenn Chambers, Associate Dean of the Honors College.
Melissa Wu, Executive Vice President for Administration and Chief Information Officer.
And Karen Kelly-Blake, Associate Professor, Chairperson of the Faculty Senate of MSU Academic Governance and the university mace-bearer.
(audience applauding) We pay tribute today to graduates who have the distinction of maintaining the highest grade point averages in the class, thereby meriting the Board of Trustees Award.
To be eligible for this award, at least three fourths of the credits for the degree must be earned in residence at Michigan State University.
This summer semester, we had 18 students qualifying for the Board Award.

(audience applauding) (audio cuts out) (audience cheering) Graduates, will you please rise?
(audience cheering) Congratulations, you are now MSU alums!
(audience cheering) Please be seated.
A great university and a world class education are the result of a combined efforts of many dedicated people.
As Dr. Jeitschko mentioned, the contributions of the MSU faculty and academic staff have been essential to your achievements, and our faculty and academic staff are a great source of pride for this university.
I ask that the faculty and academic staff rise to accept our gratitude for your contributions.
(audience applauding) Thank you so much.
And now, will the families and friends who have contributed love in your support to our graduates, please rise and accept our appreciation.
(audience applauding) Graduates, you join a long line of Spartans who have contributed much to our society.
You join people like Doctors Phillips and Gabreski who have made a difference for so many others.
And from our imminent botanist, William J. Beal's ongoing 1879 seed viability experiment here on campus, to the MSU seed study that just returned to earth from space, a legacy of discovery and service is yours to carry on.
This is my charge to you.
Graduates, you have grown deeply in the rich environment of this university community and reached high to gather the fruits of your scholarship.
I think it's appropriate to share a quote from MSUs 12th President John Hannah.
At the spring 1949 commencement, he told graduates to always remember that Michigan State College stands as a great memorial to a great idea, fostered by a great system of democratic government.
As a living mechanism for service to the people of Michigan, this nation and the world, it has great exciting tasks to perform.
As a part of that living mechanism forever, you will have reason to become increasingly proud of your alma mater and mine.
The difficulties of this day will be overcome and she will go on with you to help you to greater and more glorious things.
You now join a global group of more than half a million degreed Spartan alums.
I hope you find ways to enjoy associations with other Spartans and maintain contact with your alma mater by engaging with this network as well as coming home to us as often as you can.
In the great tradition of this university, I encourage you to use each and every day as an opportunity to apply your education in the service of others and to make the world a better place.
And I wish you all a purposeful, fulfilling life building on your experiences at Michigan State University.
Go Green!
- [Students] Go White!
(audience applauding) - I now invite you to join in singing the first stanza of the alma mater, MSU Shadows.
Ms. Whitaker will be leading us in the singing.
- [Band Leader] One, two.
